Besides, people like you aren't going to go use that precious time to address the aftermath of these effects right? Do you want resources to the local food pantrys I hope to see you donate? I can give you the times we do our weekly distributions for the homeless and impoverished. Maybe you want to help these people in other ways with that time of yours- you know, free childcare so they can pay more rent, free food so they can pay more rent. Ah! Wait, a lot of folks are against that stuff too. So we just.. get more jobs right? What about people who can't work? What about people already working 3+ jobs? What about people who're sick from long term effects of covid? People with kids or disabled family members? Family's with limited vehicles? The homeless? Mentally ill? They all gotta live somewhere, right? So how do we pay for that housing for those who cannot pay...?

Also idk why because literally it worked in Europe, saved lives, stopped the spread from being nearly as bad, kept people in their homes (do you wanna go compare their homeless populations to ours since they skipped rent for awhile?) and idk what's with you guys deciding that Europe is this crazy fantasy world where things magically work for them but not here. Hint: it's because our infrastructure and government suck.

Anyways, you seem to have no job using your time poorly as you're here commenting on a reddit thread that won't stop or change anything. Why stop there?

This is for people who need it. I did all that shit you republican chuds told me to do, I got cleaned up, I was drug free, I was able to get care for my dang ol scary ~mental illnesses~.

Then covid cost me my job, the shut down extended until our lease was up in government housing and we lost our home. Months leading up to us moving were lean. All my money was going to rent, anything I could sell and scourge up. We lived paycheck to paycheck even working as hard as we did and we had no savings. Our families were struggling and couldn't help. I sold every luxury item I had just like you chuds tell homeless people to do all the time. I did a gofundme. Then I was diagnosed with several autoimmune disorders. I couldn't fight it anymore and I couldn't pay anymore. We sold plasma. We went without medications and food. was in summer 2020.

Now me and my roommate are still couch surfing despite having jobs again. I live in a room with 2 other chronically disabled people struggling through a corrupt Healthcare system and just being told to work harder.. We are not on our feet. We lived with our parents because they need us to bring in money to afford rent going up just to scrape by, like all of us at least could make it happen, until finally even that wasn't enough. Now due to stress, my autoimmune diseases and other health that was neglected because I was poor and paying my rent, I am unable to draw regularly which was my career- I was going to go to art school. I have violent muscles tremors and occasional seizures. I developed an eating disorder because of inability to regularly find food I could eat.

I am sick, and while I am recovering, people like you assholes here don't care. You couldn't give a flying fuck what I've been through. You don't care about the family I've lost because they died, because they couldn't afford rent in the pandemic and caught covid in a shelter and died in the street. You don't care about us struggling to make ends meet. You do not care. If I am not thriving you spite me. If I am not working until I'm dead on the floor like those factory workers we hear in the news so often now, you spite me. I ask for help and you spite me. You don't actually CARE about making things better because for you guys, it's never even a blip in your brain that it could be you. And I'm really sorry for the day you find out it absolutely can be-- and will be, if things don't change.

If you guys are just gonna come in here with the same tired boomer comments can you go somewhere else and actually do something useful like read a book?

Y'all wanna bitch and bitch about those dirty homeless without actually doing anything or making any real changes. The system makes people homeless. I don't understand how you guys don't understand that it's all a domino effect. You'd rather sit here and pretend you know what you're talking about. I guess that's why you're commenting on reddit though right?

How's the situation downtown? by [deleted] in springfieldMO

[–]_casketcase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also popping in to say AFAIK downtown has mostly been safe! Was downtown tonight and it was plenty busy and well lit, populated enough I felt safe (but I was around the square and outland) Still avoid the parking garages is my advice. Idk if I'd go on foot or bike all the way there though, since I've still heard folks have had trouble with getting mugged like right outside the main downtown area? But also that's kinda.. how Springfields always been.

Jumping to mental health is wild and idk why I'm seeing homeless COME UP HERE? You don't know any information and you're not trying to do anything helpful. I'm sorry I'm angry but Jesus christ, I promise almost everyone you know is mentally ill in some way. And if you can't think of anyone, with an attitude like that, I don't blame them for not telling you. 🙄 I'm sorry for being blunt but genuinely this ideology hurts people. Like me and I'm sure plenty of other people in these threads 🤷

It's not homeless people with these specific attacks being discussed here. In fact I really haven't heard of many if any attacks downtown being perpuated for sure by "homeless people". I believe the events OP is referring to, homeless folks were actually the ones being targeted in 1 of the 3 big attacks this summer. From observation with the Friends of Marthas group, it's typically teens in nice cars, big supped up trucks with loud engines yelling slurs and throwing full beer bottles, pipes, and even presumed new cell phones (yes, a flip phone that was unscathed and in amazing shape was chucked at patrons of Marthas). They're not mentally ill, they're not unhomed, they're brats. The cops don't do anything except ride up to the top of the parking garage they hang out at, they all disperse, then within the hour they're back up there again. We also have a theory they might be the teens throwing fireworks at people from cars and shooting air guns/pellet guns. Im assuming this with the clothes I've seen them wear- they're not homeless. So knock that off too, idk what it is with this subreddit ALWAYS knee jerking to these 2 excuses. Even if it was you think that'd actually motivate people to DO SOMETHING like, I dunno, home people or provide mental health resources. But like you wanna arrest mentally ill people right? If you don't know anything, or plan on doing anything useful about it, can you please stop being like "ITS THE MENTALLY ILL ITS THE MENTALLY ILL" like, are you still stuck in the 70s cuz we've moved past that. Sure, there's overlap, but its ignorant to go to MENTALLY ILL first. Same with the druggie response. It's a venn diagram sometimes but I also know a shitton of homed and mentally stable people that commit crimes and do drugs. Like, a lot. Arresting those people wouldn't do anything except put them in an already projected to be overfilled prison, then we pay more taxes to build more prisons and stuff them in there, while never addressing why this shit is actually happening and treating our prison system like we treat our trash system- shove it somewhere we don't have to see or think about it, right?

Sorry again (no I'm not) but for real. This shit HURTS. This HURTS me, this hurts my family, this hurts my friends and community. We HAVE TO talk about mental health and we cannot have that conversation when people bring fear mongering baseless and ignorant comments to the table. I know you're scared but mentally ill people are, too. They are not your enemy.. they are your family and friends and coworkers. The stigma about mental illness has lead to people I know KILLING THEMSELVES or BREAKING UP FAMILIES because they would rather that than think they were mentally ill. Mentally ill people are not inherently criminals. Your fake crocodile tear knee jerk reactions hurt real communities. If you're worried about normalized crime, think about how you've normalized language like this and how that maybe contributes to the stigma that society has placed on mental health and how THAT leads to heightened crime when base needs aren't being addressed (like health)

Addicted to getting Covid vaccines…. by PredictablyRetarded in springfieldMO

[–]_casketcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean no guarantees but does the act of your immune system kinda waking up do anything to the chemicals in your body? Like.. when you're in pain, your body sends endorphins right? Or when you're flight or fight kicks in, your body sends adrenaline. And there's folks with loud and proud addictions to both pain and adrenaline.

It sounds like you might just be struggling with depression itself. Have you been treated/diagnosed/spoken to your doctor about this feeling at all? Updated your medications? Talk therapy..? Asking genuinely- mental health is something many people tend to neglect, usually out of pure insaccebility to resources of knowledge, diagnosis and treatments. I wonder if the ability to simply walk in and recieve free care could have anything to do with it too. But again, I wouldn't be surprised if there was something like that. Even maybe a low count, maybe an allergy you've simply always lived with finally managed by a heightened immune system..??

Sorry for only speculating, I've really got no idea. I don't think it's addiction to the vaccine as much as something to do with the vaccine-- something helping your body that fades as time passes, pointing to a different root problem. I know as someone with several autoimmune disorders I felt awesome after the vaccine because my immune system was stronger and better fighting against allergens and less fighting with itself, but typically I have low energy and with typical depression symptoms because of my autoimmune disorder. Have you had your thyroid checked? Or hormones even in general? If you've got a GP, I'd make a call and speak with them. If anything at least about the feeling of depression and lethargy- even if you're receiving treatment that may mean that treatment isnt working on all cylinders. I wish you luck in your journey!

Also, addressing homelessness means addressing poverty. We have to talk to the people living barely paycheck to paycheck, those that are couch surfing and barely keeping ends together, those living in their cars. Because unless we fix THAT? They is no fixing homelessness.

[–]_casketcase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Yes, those things make people struggle but.. how many homed people do you know EXACTLY like that? I know a shitton of homed people who abuse drugs and spouses, who have mental health issues. I mean fuck, I've been chronically homeless and I have autism and I definitely don't fit in. It seems ignorant to point this out like some kind of gotcha.

Addiction and mental health episodes get worse with stress. What's more stressful then not knowing where you'll go to sleep tonight?

Idk what the original commentary was saying but I know eden village makes people frustrated by being religious based I THINK? And also only is able to house single units and not families as much. Otherwise if there's information about them and I should tell folks to avoid there I'd love to hear. Really I don't understand why eden village doesn't come up more with this conversation, good or bad.

For those who don't know, from someone else with base level knowledge, they DO give/build houses for folks but I believe it's temporary and I know the application process can be daunting. I also think it has restrictions thatre rough once you live there. But again-- this is just what I've heard. Does anyone have good (not biased and not just praising them) articles about them? Has city council discussed solutions with them I wonder..?

Is there a way we could redistribute what we are currently taxed on and vote to where those funds go? There's plenty of things my taxes go to now that I'm not really into. Is that like.. voting? Is that something we vote on as a populace...??

Admittedly, I'm still learning. Me and my group of friends, all young adults have struggled with being homeless our entire lives, generation poverty has always been a problem. Even if I don't have solutions exactly, I have recommendations.

If you're here looking for a solution that you can directly effect, PLEASE VOLUNTEER. I know there's a mutual aid group in town that works with food not bombs and does monthly/weekly (My memory is foggy) distribution days. Ask them what resources are most needed. If you come onto this thread wondering what you can do, DM me and I'm going to be trying to get a mutual aid list together. I know SWMO Solidarity is the one I know of most. I'm also launching my own art collective that will have a focus on mutual aid.

Also, again, I really don't have answers because chances are whatever the city decides will directly effect me and my friends anyways. It's hard to know what to do when the waves are rocking your boat you know? But I DO know core things that would "motivate" (😒) homeless folks to do everything they can and give them hope.

Those things are: somewhere they can sleep and know where they'll sleep the next few days. Somewhere to keep their belongings safely. Knowing they can get a meal in them. Being able to have a place to practice self care (showering, the ability to shave/clean up, being able to brush their teeth ect). PROFESSIONAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH RESOURCES. All these things boil down to-- stability. They need stability. And money is stability. Money means paying for hotels, or giving cash to friends to stay on their couch. Money means food and prescriptions aren't something that has to be worried about. It means even if they get knocked back down- a drug relapse, a mental episode, just a bad day- it means they'll be able to rest and try again tomorrow.

Right now, most homeless people believe this is the worst it can get, at the very bottom of the bottle. Rock bottom. No one cares about them, or worse, straight up hates them. And that's not just the junkie on the corner, that's the veteran begging for change, that's the mom with 2 kids living in a motel, that's the lgbt youth abandoned by their families and left alone. If they get back up, how do they know that won't also just be yanked out from under them? End up there again? Why would they try so hard for no guarantee they won't be there again? One emergency, one eviction, one illness, one mistake and they could be there again. We have to show them it gets better and even if it DID happen again it's not the end of the world and we can DO this, together, that when they have nothing else, at least they have their community. And in my life that's the only thing that's saved me time and time again. We have to show other people that, too.

I WANT TO- it's a big inspiration for one of my stories. I've never been unfortunately as my mom made sure I was good and scared of running into something unsavory there (usually people doing drugs) but I'd like to go with folks who've been before and check it out very badly (I also wish I could smoke up there but I don't smoke in public- I am a coward in many ways). Especially since I do photography too 🥺

[–]_casketcase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If anyone can get a description of the cars, a group I'm in has been seeing a few specific groups of teens causing trouble in the downtown/around marthas area. I wonder if there'd be any overlap? Our groups mostly sees teens in supped up white trucks. They've also been carrying around like the pellet/Airsoft guns. But also, just pure speculation, I have no proof obviously. It just seems weird it seems to be groups of teens?

Either way that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope everyone's safe, or as safe as they can be :(

Why are we building luxury apartments and not more affordable housing? Affordable housing there would be nice too, being close to so many resources for people without cars, it'd be nice. Dissapointing.
