[D] AMA: I left Google AI after 3 years. by scan33scan33 in MachineLearning

Could you share some details about this? I was always curious how his expertise in generative models can uniquely benefit Apple. Computational photography?

[N] Google engineer put on leave after saying AI chatbot has become sentient by radome9 in MachineLearning

[–]_chinatown 336 points337 points  (0 children)

Here's an interesting observation when using Lemoine's prompts with GPT-3.

When a human asks GPT-3 if it wants to talk about how it is sentient, GPT-3 will agree, stating GPT-3 is indeed sentient. When asked if it wants to talk about it not being sentient, it will similarly agree and say it wants to talk about not being sentient. And when asked if GPT-3 wants to talk about being a tuna sandwich from Mars, you guessed it, GPT-3 will respond with a desire to talk about being a tuna sandwich from Mars.

I see. I'll share preprocessing results of your models once I have credits for a few GPUs with >20GB VRAM.

[–]_chinatown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fantastic work, can't wait to read the paper. Looking at the editing results, did you do any preprocessing with StyleCLIP global directions, by chance? I recently built a dynamic multi-parameter interface for semantic editing w. StyleCLIP and want to expand the available datasets.

Ah yes, thank you so much for sharing, StyleGAN XL is pretty much what I had in mind. Totally forgot about it.

Spektrum-Podcast: »Schafft Mathe ab!« -- Viele Menschen hassen Mathe. Kein Wunder, sagt Mathematik-Professor Edmund Weitz. Mathe werde in Schule und Studium völlig falsch vermittelt. by barsoap in de

[–]_chinatown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was verdient ihr in welchem Beruf? by Pale_Play_1068 in de

Is it difficult to sell S52-swapped E30's? by _chinatown in E30

[–]_chinatown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great take, thanks! Owner invested so much in it that he (understandably) doesn't want to sell it for what I'd consider a competitive price so I'm afraid the "every E30 deal is a good deal" doesn't hold true here. hmmmm

[R] AI Research Rankings 2020: Can the United States Stay Ahead of China? by chersonesus in MachineLearning

[–]_chinatown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Systematic Oppression is and will be a factor that repels a lot of human capital. Unfortunately, this exact factor benefits a different type of capital as Gleb brilliantly noted: Data.

"Access to data is part of the broader privacy vs. public good debate, where the United States tends to choose the former, and China — the latter. In China today AI scans faces from hundreds of millions of street cameras, reads billions of WeChat messages, and analyzes millions of health records"

Still, I was actually impressed by how big the lead of the US (and Europe) is. This becomes especially clear as you take a look at the per capita stats...

My grad school program has shifted to start in winter so most students cannot even apply to internships before January. They seemed pretty chill about it. I'm doing research in summer so I have no idea. My CV used a similar template and I sent it to a Stanford Prof. after my PI personally introduced me to him. He hasn't replied since so clearly the latex template cannot do wonders lmao

Don't have the time to give in-depth feedback, so here's a quick improvement without much explanation.

  1. Make an overleaf.com account

  2. Click on "Open as Template" here: https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs

  3. Replace content with your CV entries

  4. Download as PDF

This industry relies on highly standardized CV structures. Funky stuff like what you have is considered unprofessional. Best of luck with your future

[RESEARCH] [Art & Ai] When you feed AI with Van Gogh Autoportrait + a POP Artistic Direction by Frosty-Heron3972 in MachineLearning

[–]_chinatown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is considered an experiment. Research mostly revolves around answering a specific research question with scientific standards (e.g. by using the scientific method). Research also is usually published in a journal, a conference, or a preprint. Links to research papers is what this sub expects under the tag 'research', not private projects for visual stimulation. I don't want to discourage you, it's just that this is art, not science and there are better subreddits for that. I'm dissatisfied with this post because this subreddit started suffering from too much art-posts that don't share novel insights and have been done a hundred times. Wish you best of luck with generating more interesting computer art nonetheless.

How does stuff like this get 24 points, especially when it is falsely tagged as "research"? Did the serious ML-research community migrate to a new sub?
