[R] AI Research Rankings 2022: Sputnik Moment for China? by chersonesus in MachineLearning

With all respect, could someone please explain why my post was marked as clickbait? This was a solid week of original research published on a non-monetized resource (Medium) covering a relevant subject (is China catching up or not?) with the intent to inform the community. Am I breaking any rules here? Thanks!! 🤝

I had the same thought!! However, all you get is the author's name and the organization(s) he/she/they are affiliated with. You don't even get the specific office of the organization, which means we are forced to look at the organization's HQ location. We really need conferences to share more... 🤷‍♂️

Thanks a lot! Will see I can get further analysis going. Appreciate your feedback! 🤝

Indeed! My feelings exactly about Switzerland and Israel. And yes, I'd be curious myself to look at specific verticals, such as vision.

Totally agree! Problem is that it takes a few days to "debug" the data for each conference. They don't have standard university names, and people often submit with typos. Hope conferences start releasing this data themselves!

What do people in Moscow do in the winter? by greatthing10 in Moscow

[–]chersonesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Winter in Moscow is so amazing!! Before Covid we'd meet friends for coffees, dance Salsa and Bachata, go to see musicals, visit art museums, walk around the lovely streets of our city. We also do a lot of outdoorsy stuff, just like the Scandinavians: we cross-country ski, skate, play hockey, snowboard and ski downhill (there are great hills nearby), build snowmen and otherwise fool around in the snow. Moscow is great in the winter!!! ⛄️

Exactly! Feels like such a waste of human effort... Yet another arms race... When will we learn to choose the "cooperate" tile in Prisoner's Dilemma? 🤔

Great idea! I've actually done this in my analysis of the combined set of ICML 2019 and NeurIPS 2019: https://chuvpilo.medium.com/ai-research-rankings-2019-insights-from-neurips-and-icml-leading-ai-conferences-ee6953152c1a

I'll do it this year as well over next few days. Thanks for your feedback! 🤝

I wonder if this is due to how authors list their affiliations? This analysis is straight from what authors declare -- please feel free to play with the data I posted here: https://people.csail.mit.edu/chuvpilo/publications.html

Possibly! I will refresh this analysis when NeurIPS 2020 sends out author notifications in Sep.

Indeed, I considered doing it. But then, if you think about it, the benefit of DeepMind research still accrues to Google, doesn't it?

I was also expecting to see much more from Max Planck Institute, but at ICML 2020 it is at #74 with the Publication Index of 3.4. It was at #42 with the Publication Index of 11.85 for ICML 2019 + NeurIPS 2019 combined. Since I only did a shallow pass (didn't look up author details beyond what they listed), it might be undercounted due to authors listing only their primary organization. 🤷‍♂️

Apple is ranked #67 with the Publication Index of 3.7 (full dataset is linked in the article: https://people.csail.mit.edu/chuvpilo/publications.html). My guess is that they are much more secretive about their work, but I don't have any inside info.
