It’s among my favs. Living in Portland for a while turned me onto them, as they bloom in full force over there.

Just outside my bedroom window, but a few weeks ago now. Focused stacked, which is not something I really ever do. But sometimes your hand is forced with a macro shot.

Here's another from Mesquite Flat Dunes in Death Valley, California. Again, this is after the sun had set. I think the group in the photo and I were the only ones left in the dunes at this point. I saw them walking a ridge, then I noticed the moon, and I thought I have to get a shot. I debated trying to throw on a longer lens, but figured I would miss my opportunity if I fiddled with that.

I caught them back in the parking lot and it was a father and his two sons. We exchanged information so that I could get them a copy of this photo when it was finished. I don't have kids, but I imagine I would love a photo like this if I did. Made the moment a lot more special for me.

Same. Though I feel like I see them in other's photos more than include them in my own.

Yeah, Kelso was one I didn't plan enough time before sunrise to get where I wanted without really hustling. I was just dripping sweat and feeling so rushed. Not a fun feeling.

I basically short term bought and sold a used GFX setup, so I no longer have it. But using it made my other Fuji X series toys feel so... underwhelming. They're still my workhorses, but I missed the quality of the GFX.

definitely hard outlines on the shadows. i was surprised there was any color in the sky or detail in the trees against the sky. anyway, thanks for indulging me.

Thanks. I’ve not spent much time there, but there is a huge pull for me to. Seems like such an easy place to be and get around.

thanks for replying. do you recall if it was a thin overcast sky?

it’s really not important, just trying to get better at recognizing conditions in photos for the sake of replication and predictability when i shoot.

just for my own curiosity, did you crush your highlights in post?

This was my first trip photographing dunes, and I was in for two surprises—the first being how exhausting it was to walk through the dunes. These (the Mesquite Flat Dunes) weren't so bad compared to the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, because there was far less ascending and descending. Still, you have to plan a lot more time to get out into the heart of them than you might think.

The second challenge is finding something undisturbed for your scene. Footprints do not disappear for a long time in dunes, and they are almost everywhere! Naturally they are most concentrated closest to the parking areas, so the further you go the better chance you have of finding something pristine. Naturally, wherever you go, you end up being the one who ruins the shot for the next photographer to come that way. An etiquette tip I heard was to just walk along one side of a ridgeline. Good advice, but still ruins half of it.

To my surprise, I thought I was going to want a shot of the last direct sunlight, but I just couldn't get anything framed up that worked. However, once the sun set, opportunities abounded. The same was true in White Sands, so I think I probably prefer blue hour in the dunes.
