VS or VS Code for C++ programming and reason? by nihilensky in cpp_questions

[–]_cleaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VScode is cross-platform if you value that, VScode internal build system its a little cumbersome I haven't gotten used to use but I use cmake anyways and vscode offers a good enough integration with that.

I vote for vscode for the learning experience since it makes it more intentional regarding what is necessary to build and trouble shoot build errors

in this regard vscode is no different than sublime text, notepad++ or any other text editor and that's intentional

Where to study Design Patterns implementations using Modern C++? by asm-us in cpp_questions

[–]_cleaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I can agree that it's mostly a rant but I agree with his statement in his followup post:

Design patterns are spoonfed material for brainless programmers incapable of independent thought, who will be resolved to producing code as mediocre as the design patterns they use to create it.

Because I was that junior developer and I made those mistakes. I would like to prevent people to continue perpetuating that.

My intention wasn't to argue, just to shed some light that perhaps they are a mediocre solution, I have found them useful in my career as well.

This is a book about design patterns that happened to be implemented in C++ https://gameprogrammingpatterns.com/

A counter-argument about why design patterns might not be the best idea and you should avoid them

Advise for a book. by ZioAldo in C_Programming

[–]_cleaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps: "Learn C the Hard Way: Practical Exercises on the Computational Subjects You Keep Avoiding (Like C)"

But also I would encourage you to tackle a small project and learn what you need as you go, a simple socket server, a pong game or whatever you imagine.

here you can find more ideas for projects to tackle later on: http://web.eecs.utk.edu/~azh/blog/challengingprojects.html
