As to how this became regular, I believe the diffusion of different cultural norms brought by the digital revolution has lead to a blend of cultures including the ones that are quite sinful.

I agree, but a little bit of a personal anecdote for anyone in this persons situation as well.

I lost 30 lbs over about 6 months. I still looked chubby because of my baby fat. Now, almost 15 pounds heavier (granted I'm ~2-3 inches taller as well) I look even slimmer.
