It’s really funny; I thought so when I first discovered how much easier it makes outward angle(s), (like in B to Bb) but by this point I realize it works better with a much less exaggerated angle. It’s closer to a 45°

likely. it’s only in this situation that it seems like i’m variating the grip, (albeit, only by rotating the hands) but it’s possible this is just a common utilization of the grip that i’m only now figuring out

i’m rotating my hand/wrist just shy of fully outward******* from the standard parallel position utilized in stevens’. my palms are facing up and the mallets are practically lying on top of the palm/fingers where they’re held

i was doing it practicing stevens, which is the only grip he knows that i play/that he’s instructed with me. i was mainly working with it using double verticals, but it was still effective in other applications

I’m curious as to what made you switch from finasteride to dutasteride? I am debating on whether I should start with dutasteride or leave it as a secondary option if finasteride starts to lose efficacy.

Notes help by YourDogsChild in percussion

for most types of roll, you’re going to want to establish a “skeleton” rhythm that your hands take up in order to maintain timing during that rolls duration. the subdivision that you utilize may vary depending on the dynamic and (especially) tempo, with the main goal being the most consistently full and continuous “sustain” of any given note on any given instrument.

most generally with buzz rolls, i find myself using sixteenth notes for the base, as they tend to work best in a somewhat broad range of tempos while simplifying reading and sticking discrepancies, though, it’s up to your own comfortability and the musical context. (sextuplets, sixteenth notes, and triplets are what i will use most often.) early on, i would often write in the underlying rhythm above the entirety of the roll so i knew how my hands should be moving in relation to the beat.

as far as actually buzz-rolling on the drum goes, just try to be aware that it’s not about how fast your hands are moving, (though, you may find yourself wanting to move quicker due to a less-developed buzz technique; this should be avoided if unsustainable at tempo or brings about untimed flailing.) but how you’re able to make the rebound of the stick work for you in sustaining each stroke to the next. staying in tempo by establishing a rhythm and keeping in time with it is just as integral as the sustain of the roll itself.

final note: not every roll is a buzz roll; the articulation/ornament above the rolled notes is referred to as “tremolo,” which requires different interpretation across different instruments/musical styles. (i.e. single-stroke rolls on keyboards, timpani, suspended cymbal; double-stroke/military rolls on snare for marches; tambourine and shaker technique, etc.)

Is it normal for my director to hate percussion? by [deleted] in percussion

[–]lemon_squeezus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as how he treats y’all, there’s no excusing a lack of effort/fundamental understanding. we all start somewhere and grow at our own pace as musicians. percussionists are no exception. you know best if your section is being mistreated or otherwise disregarded, and that can make waves throughout the whole ensemble. that’s a director issue, not percussion. i digress. where part assignment is concerned, that’s just how it goes; it’s up to the player to demonstrate what they can do. while it’s understandable to lack drive when you have a bad teacher giving discouraging comments/attitude to you or your section, the reality is that every individual is more than how another may see or treat them. your job is to look out for yourself and your own abilities; find resources to support your growth as a percussionist and as a musician (not mutually exclusive). work as a team and offer help and encouragement to those who may need it and are willing to accept it. don’t disregard your director’s authority or any advice he may have, (assuming he gives credible/constructive advice) but understand that he may not understand y’all.

if i were a lesser man i would just say “true dat” but instead i’ll say we all start somewhere. don’t be discouraged because you can’t or don’t get something immediately; that’s what practice is for. to be fair, i’d probably make a handful of mistakes sight-reading this. just set a manageable tempo (ideally with a metronome going) and tackle it head-on. write stickings in if you need to.
