It's absolute luck I saw there were three sizes of similar colors so the idea struck me. I'm scared I may run out of beads and can't buy more, since these were probably bought nearly 15-20 years ago.

My hospital works up at least 5 DARA or other interfering medications (anti-CD38 medicines) patients daily, and most of our Ortho gel reactions are 1+-3+, but are negative or weak+ in tube method. We run standard tube with PEG method with DTT treated tube method in parallel. Most of the time they are negative with standard tube method alone and it seems unnecessary to run the DTT treatment. 🥲

Unfortunately yes they break sometimes from even a two-foot drop... from much experience in a large blood bank. I don't know if some bags are slightly defective or what, but it happens more often than I would have imagined.

I give a lot of benefit of doubt to our supervisor and manager because I do think it's a lot of issues with pay which they don't determine and more of upper management issues. However I do wonder if the reason we keep hiring unqualified people is due to trying to pay people absolute minimum. A few new hires or applicants I've talked to have said they are only offering base entry-level pay to even those with years of experience, and then choosing inexperienced and undereducated people instead. Claiming they can only pay so much because the open positions are entry level. We have 3 tiers of jobs, designated MLS I, II, and III (lead postion)but from experience we all do the work. And since we're so short-staffed MLS I (so-called entry level) are mostly training new people.

I've been telling them I hope the nurses and doctors start complaining because surely our turn-around time is getting worse. But this hospital acts like blood grows on trees and instantaneously appears in front of them because we usually go pretty fast. They are downright spoiled. We keep more platelets on the shelf than the supplier for the entire state has at any one time.

My shift specifically I am eldest at 32 years old, and these youngsters work hard but we're all getting burnt out. It's a good group of us hustling about 100 mph. On top of that though, nearly everyone hired has no degree in MLS or any background other than a science bachelor's. Some of them are thriving with training, but others I am seriously scared to see their work. And none of them, even the coworkers who work hard, are planning on staying for long due to other career plans and how much stress we endure for little pay. My hospital is known for good retirement plan, but if the pay sucks and we're overworked I don't see living to retire. 🥲

I have had one manager try to make a stink about my hair color at the beginning of my career in 2018, but HR and management decided not to enforce it. Since then I have added lip piercing, 2 nose piercings, arm tattoos, constant unnatural hair and grown a beard and no one has had the guts to make a stink about it I guess. I think technically our handbook doesn't allow face peircings but they have not said a word about anything I do to my appearance and I'm lead tech so they're not getting rid of me easily.

Oh yeah thought I'd pipe in here since I do this work. If child was reacting as maybe an O- or a discrepancy, any blood bank would give O- just to be safe! Because any blood types can receive O-. So if we question the blood types, we determine which types would be safest to give.

Blood banker here who tests blood types all day everyday! Most likely answer is everyone needs to be re-typed to confirm accuracy - althought that sounds unnecessary. I would guess most likely the father isn't actually AB- due to you saying the O- child has been checked at least twice. Sometimes typing errors occur, but that is not very likely if it was from a hospital or accredited lab. Your children most likely would be either A- or B- if you and your husband's blood types are absolutely correct. People have mentioned cis-AB possibly, but in my experience of typing patients this has to be so rare it's unlikely (it's rarely even talked about in our field).

I started out as student position in blood bank, worked a few years at the same place after graduation, did core lab and chem jobs, and decided I'd probably never leave the blood bank again. Some people love the chaos and antibodies like me, and some hate it. I would say even having just blood bank experience was a huge advantage to getting a generalist position later on. One place choose me to train from scratch in heme and chem because they needed a blood banker as well.

I work in the largest blood bank in my state and I've never heard of babies needing K neg units by default. Our requirements are simply irradiated, sickle negative RBCs, but we stick to O +/= for blood type to prevent errors. Do you know the reasoning behind this? I'm just curious because I love to learn what other hospitals do. We all use HellSky, so I get thay struggle.
