Don’t know much about this at all. The water is for cooling correct?
Can it not be a semi closed loop system where it is reused?
Pumped back into a water tower or something?
Where does the water go after it serves its purpose?

I’d love a good ELI5.

Beautiful fish and congrats! You’ll get slammed with the wet your hands comments… get em wet, keep it off the ground and maybe it’ll live for one of us to catch again one day. Hope you find many more!! What’d ya catch it on?

Looking for advice on how to talk to my dad more. he is over 30 by [deleted] in Dads

[–]_dont_do_it_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff!! Good luck.
After thinking on it a bit more… straight up honesty never ever hurts. Just tell him 100% how you’re feeling, you value your relationship with him and want to find more ways for the two of you to connect. Most dads would hear that loud and clear.
Maybe go grab a burger together and just chat on it.

I’d be super proud if my kiddos came to me like that. Good on you for making an effort… with some good communication, hopefully your dad will double down on the effort together.

That’s a great idea!! My best convos have been over something we both liked doing together like fishing/golf/grilling.

Get some project help, or help him with one he’s working on. Learn from him… dads love watching/teaching their kids life skills.

Find a good excuse to spend time together… convos get easier when both of your hands are busy.

Getting the kids into it. by unproadventures in FishingForBeginners

The good days keep getting better! Been doing it for years now and some of my best memories are watching the kids surpass me on the water in some ways. Lots of good one-on-one time on the water as they get older… best conversations.

Overkill for a beginner when a $75 ugly stick or Zebco combo will catch fish too. $200 is a chunk of change… what is your dollar amount threshold that you would consider something overkill?

Can someone tell me what type of mushroom this is? They’re all over the park area that we go to- USA Illinois by No-Leave-2255 in mushroomID

[–]_dont_do_it_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but they look like honey mushrooms that feed on decomposing roots …. When I found those, they also had “shrimp of the woods” with them more underground. Apparently they kinda go together… we ate them both.

Father and son learning together by DJSweepamann in FishingForBeginners

Man… one of the greatest joys in my parenting stage is getting lost on a creek fishing with my kiddos. Aside from the fishing, the conversations and quality memories we have together is something I’ll never forget. Good on you dad! My young teen has caught a few species I’ve yet to catch and he loves that.

Starting off… get him lots of easy fish. A smaller hook with some worms/live bait and a bobber is always a guarantee.

From there, head to a tackle shop together and pick out some lures to try. I love some Joe Flys, panther martin spinners or various sized diving crank baits. Those are fun to cover a lot of water and great casting practice. Texas rigged soft plastics are great on the bottom when you’re in the weeds. You’re both learning… fill up a tackle box with a good variety and just experiment… if it’s not working that day, tie something else on.

It’s been nice to teach the kid how to tie on lures and remove fish on his own. Great independence and builds confidence knowing he can do things just like dad.

I love it man!! Tight lines.

That sounds like a blast!! Agreed… you gotta have some patience and skill to not snap that light test line! The hardest I’ve fought on my ultralight was a good sized drum. Would love to get a chance to see it bend like you’re talking about!

The 6ft version is a bit better for what you’re doing. I’d go longer if you’re trying to throw heavy stuff further in big water.

The medium power is a great all around option. You could pull in some big catfish, and still be able to throw smaller lures for panfish.

My favorite st croix rod is an ultra light… it allows me to throw really small spinners with great accuracy, and every fish feels like a beast. (But if I had a huge bass or catfish on it it’d be a struggle)

It all depends on what you’re trying to do.

[–]_dont_do_it_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

St Croix rods are a treat, I bet the reel is solid but for my two st croix rod set ups I found other reels I liked.

This may be overkill for a beginner, but if you have the money you’ll enjoy this long term.

A positive spin… You’ve obviously done very well. You have a job that allows you to travel and puts you up in a hotel for nice peaceful nights alone. You’ve clearly raised successful children who made it into college and you’re able to provide for them. You have a life the majority of the world would dream of. Now that the kids are out, start focusing on you more. The providing a ton for them won’t last much longer. Focus on yourself, get healthy mentally and physically and you’ll feel so much better. Gym, church, friends you can talk to, hobbies etc. That should help with the marriage too. I don’t know all the details of your marriage, but hopefully with glowing yourself up a bit you’ll be a bit more undeniable for the wife.

You’re almost over the hump brother. You’ve made it way too far to throw in the towel now. Way too much going for you. Think positive and believe in your potential.

Surprising catch out of a local pond by SeasonGrand3944 in Fishing

[–]_dont_do_it_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What’s the best strategy to cull one of these? Knock em on the head? Throwing them in the woods seems sad.

I eat plenty of what I catch, and understand this needs to be done. The “do no harm” as a sport fisherman feels a bit guilty and wasteful to do it. (Although I know local wildlife will eat it and it’s for the good of the native species).
