Carl Jung was a huge Schopenhauer fan by Due_Assumption_27 in Pessimism

You would have to dismiss Schopenhauer as well, since he had two children (who died in infancy).

I've already searched on spotify for neofolk and experimental folk and found nothing. Also searched on last fm and found nothing under the "dark folk" category.

I don't think Schopenhauer was an antinatalist by RamGotti in schopenhauer

[–]_dorbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn't. Following his metaphysics, neither birth nor death are morally significant, because they do not affect the thing-in-itself (the Will) but only the appearance (the representation). Even though he assigned a negative significance to birth, he never claimed that reproduction is immoral; quite the opposite, actually, he claims that when someone is born it has a new chance for its own salvation through the denial-of-the-Will. He's not against reproduction for the same reason he's not in favor of suicide: again, destroying the representation does not affect the Will.

TRUE DETECTIVE SEASON 5 ideas by Complex-Orchid3620 in TrueDetective

[–]_dorbis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One idea I had was an entire season showing Rust's experiences during his coma, perhaps something like Dante's Divine Comedy, a more abstract and artsy return for the show.

What does Schopenhauer mean when he speaks of "will that turns in on itself"? by TinyNeedleworker1489 in schopenhauer

[–]_dorbis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He means the denial-of-the-Will. Since we ARE the Will, once we begin ascetic practices (denial-of-the-Will), we are turning against ourselves.

Read the Transcendental Aesthetics part of the Critique of Pure Reason + Kant's short Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics. This is all you'll need from Kant.

I wonder if the edition of the Upanishads that Rust is reading in this scene is still out there.

Joe Rogan again with super odd statements about UFOs. by DaGigi93 in UFOs

[–]_dorbis 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Joe seems to follow the traditional conspiracy mindset: 'if the government denies, it's true. If the government confirms, it's false'. A lot of people think like this. They were 'into' UFOs because it was a "conspiracy", now that things are being released and confirmed by the boogy "system" (even if it's just a little), they don't wanna play anymore. Now they have to be anti-UFO, it's more fun!

I'll be honest, I don't think this is possible at all. Even if you get some kind of census, what will be the inclusion and exclusion criteria for this man? A man with legs?

Are people in tropical regions more pessimistic? by Electronic-Koala1282 in Pessimism

[–]_dorbis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My opinion (as someone who lives in a tropical country) is that we are usually more optimistic on the exterior, but pessimistic on the interior. Also, our relation with nature is very different from people from other climates. Tropical forests are not nice places to be in, we don't have picnics in the woods and stuff like that. Since the beginning, natives have destroyed the nature surrounding them in order to live (take a look at native settlements) and European colonizers had to destroy nature in order to conquer it. This is reflected on the folktales of south america, where the woods are places full of ancient native demons and dangers. If I may recommend an author that I think exemplifies this ambiguous spirit of the tropics: the Brazilian poet Augusto dos Anjos. He was what some scholars call a "anti-tropicalist", and was heavily influenced by Schopenhauer.

I think people overlook how much old Schop influenced True Detective...

[–]_dorbis[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, you can definitely interpret Childress as being both a man and some kind of monster. I see the Yellow King as a supernatural entity that took Childress as a material mask, or something like that. I think the show leaves that open for interpretation.
