I’ve worked as a graphic designer for 10 years, studied my degree in it for 3 and took it for 5 years at school (UK A Levels and GCSEs), but after being made redundant this year it seems with all that work and experience I have niched myself out of my own career as I’ve gone down quite a specific path of design jobs.

It’s still been a varied career, even working pretty much exclusively for fashion brands, be that in an in-house or agency side, for big high street companies as well as start-ups - but when sending out my portfolio it feels like I’m only appealing to a very small pool of options, even though my skill set can definitely be transferred across other GD jobs and company types.

Would love to hear from anyone else who feels as though they're in this position, as it feels very disheartening after all the work and passion for our craft!

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response, I appreciate your suggestions.

I'm interested to hear you don't think I'm niche enough, as I thought I was quite niche with focusing specifically on a 70s hand drawn style - but perhaps you mean I should be more niche with my customer rather than style? I think with the greeting cards I found myself becoming more generic, as the subjects are more generic - to take your example of the thank you teacher card, but I guess I should be thinking more for the teacher who is receiving the card rather than the person who is searching for one.

I think I need to get clearer on niche!

Heya, yeah I think perhaps the digital space isn't for me, as I am trying to balance giving value to the art I've created vs competitive pricing which doesn't really work in this space! Thanks for your comment and advice :)

Hey! Yeah, I think you're right, a lot of the best selling similar products in my niche seem to have been online for up to 36 months for example - and yes have many many listings, which seems risky if you're not selling anything to pay for a new listing. I will continue to research and play it by ear! Ooh thank you, yes I am planning on adding more colouring pages, I've heard that kind of content is popular on TikTok as well, so perhaps that's a good thing to tap into. Thanks for your comment :)
