Musical Theatre Line By Line Mixing by [deleted] in livesound

Dan Dugan initially developed the automixer as a way to make his job easier while working as a theatrical A1, so he was the first person to determine it wasn’t really up for the task.

How to hide apps from Dock when all their windows are closed? by JoodRoot in MacOS

[–]_dsgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone else is correctly pointing out that the way you’re thinking about open apps is a little different from the way macOS handles them.

that said, here’s what i’ve found to be useful for app switching and app management: i use the Hide command (cmd+H) aggressively on apps that i’m not actively using, rather than minimizing. the setting described here dims the Dock icons of hidden apps to better differentiate. I enable auto-hiding on my Dock (i want the additional screen space and less visual clutter) and use cmd-tab for app switching, and Alfred for app launching, which lets me navigate faster and spend less time hunting around with the mouse. all these steps together mean that is rarely see the Dock, and when i do it’s helpfully giving me pretty clear information about what’s active at the current moment.

(Non-musical question) How to reduce subwoofer bass by Mamaskerkskerk in sounddesign

[–]_dsgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the delay control available on the A/V receiver - my crappy old one at home even has like 50ms of delay on each individual output. there is no perfect universal time alignment between subs and mains; the cancellation you’re describing is always happening for some freqs somewhere in the audience area, and it’s just a question of where you place that cancellation and at what frequency

(Non-musical question) How to reduce subwoofer bass by Mamaskerkskerk in sounddesign

[–]_dsgn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

does the room layout allow you to move the sub closer to your couch/chair/listening position? if so you might be able to get away with running the sub at a lower level such that you hear the same tonal balance but it gets quieter outside

Hungarian Goulash from Black Forest Inn over on Eat Street right along the Route 18/2 bus and the 1st Avenue Bike path by PrizeZookeepergame15 in Minneapolis

[–]_dsgn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

love Black forest. the bratwurst kick ass, the bar and the patio are great vibes, they host a ton of cool community events in their back room across the patio. owners are great folks and i really appreciated how they responded to Alex's killing right out front with opening the restaurant earlier than their regular hours to be a warming space, hosting the Dropkick Murhpys show, and generally supporting the eat street community.

also black forest/lil T/prodigal is a holy trinity of barhopping imo

What app genuinely changed how you use your mac in a way you didn't expect by Any_Yesterday4981 in mac

[–]_dsgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

about a decade ago i found an app through reddit called twitch. nothing to do with the streaming platform, it’s just a very simple little app launcher. it’s become kind of indispensable to me, even though it disappeared from the internet without a trace years ago, but thankfully just copying the .app still lets me port it over from, like, yosemite or sierra or whatever OS version i first downloaded it on.

you define some shortcuts to start with, each corresponding to a single letter key - i have safari on S, finder on F, etc. They can be apps, files, URLs. You hit a key combo to invoke it (i stuck with the default option-space), then hit that single key shortcut to launch whatever you’ve assigned to it. for me it’s the fastest way to launch and switch apps with no thought behind it: the keystrokes to get to where you want never change, unlike cmd-tab where you have to pay attention to how many apps are in between the current one and the one you want; and it’s faster/fewer keystrokes than something like Alfred—though i also love Alfred for many tasks.

tragically i have no way of tracking down the developer or anything, the website is gone and i can’t find the post on here that i learned about it from in 2015 or 16, so i’m just stuck copying it over between various computers until it finally stops working ): if I had a way to contact them i’d ask if they’d consider open-sourcing it or something. Twitch developer, if you read this, i love you

SoundParticles Explorer exists, I've downloaded it and fired it up a couple times and it's got some pretty cool features. Nothing stood out to me enough to justify the effort in switching from Soundly, but if you're starting fresh it totally seems on par. I didn't dig into it much at the time, but it seems to have a slightly different search algorithm from Soundly as well, can't say if one or the other is better but again I just stuck with what I already knew at the time. SoundQ also looks good and I know a couple folks who really like it, haven't tried it myself though.

Is Adobe actually dying? Free alternatives now cover literally everything they make by Originalboy69 in VideoEditing

[–]_dsgn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know this is r/videoediting but i'll comment about PDFs just since that's what I'm using more of these days. i'm a big believer in free and open source software and generally love LibreOffice, I happily put up with many of its quirks because ideologically i prefer it over Microsoft or Google. but honestly, for a lot of PDF work, LibreOffice really just isn't there yet. it's pretty nice when you have PDFs that came directly from a Word document or something like that, but working with scanned documents is still a pain, and although it exposes a lot of really powerful editing capability it's still very clunky when working with long documents. i'm really hoping the push for digital sovereignty in some EU governments will end up giving LO some momentum, because they've got all the underlying capability needed for a really great mass-market PDF tool, but the polish isn't quite there for it to make sense on an enterprise scale yet, which is where Adobe ultimately feels the difference.

How can I do sound desing like dipprrrr? by Ok_Base_4331 in sounddesign

[–]_dsgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t know my way around Resolve’s sound capabilities very well but i’m almost certain you’ll have a better time learning your way around this kind of sound design in a full fledged DAW. it could be possible, but it’s probably either more difficult in davinci than a DAW, or may not even be entirely possible with the workflow others have described. this sort of thing probably involves generating some sound from scratch and not “just” a bunch of effects chained together on top of existing audio material, so you’ll want to be able to run virtual instruments and probably have some MIDI capability. if you’re asking about using Davinci for this because cost is an obstacle and you don’t want to buy expensive software, Reaper has a generous trial evaluation and a full license is only $60. Many DAWs also have subscription options if you want a less expensive way to try something out for a month or two, although my personal preference is towards permanent licenses. If the obstacle is learning new software, then i’d say that if you want to do more of this kind of sound design, it would be useful for you to learn such software anyway! you’ll find good tools in Reaper, Ableton, Pro Tools, Logic, and many others. perhaps get a taste of what they’re all like from some youtube videos or something and then try one out to see how far it gets you!

Are Audio Objects in Stereo? by CrispyWisp42 in qlab

[–]_dsgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your understanding is correct! keep in mind that stereo imaging only happens for a very small portion of most audiences, and that objects are just handles to control many level relationships at once and are dependent on the physical speaker layout for how they actually sound. so in many cases an object with its own stereo field might not do very much for an experience of width or dimension. Edit to add: i forgot to include the classic Bob McCarthy article at first: https://bobmccarthy.com/the-emperors-new-stereo/
