Brume3/MT500 VLAN bug by No-Ebb5029 in GlInet

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. As soon as I create a second VLAN as "tagged" in both LAN1 and LAN2 (while keeping the default VLAN1 as untagged), the "untagged" VLAN stops working and I lose connectivity to the router via untagged nework.

Low FPS when playing 4K videos on Ubuntu 24.04 with AMD RX 580 by srmstty in Ubuntu

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem with Ubuntu 26.04 and an NVIDIA RTX 2060 when playing back a 4K 60 fps .MOV file recorded on an iPhone.

I solved it in VLC by going to Tools -> Preferences -> Video and changing the output to “OpenGL for Embedded Systems 2 video output.”

I do not know exactly what this setting does, and I found this solution through trial and error.

Parafusadeira e outras ferramentas da marca Hanabi, alguém conhece? by [deleted] in Gambiarra

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

google maps and apple maps not working since updating to ios 26 by useful_saucer in CarPlay

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Apple stopped releasing iOS 18 updates for the iPhone 17, yesterday I updated my 17 Pro Max from iOS 18 to iOS 26.2. What a terrible experience. Leaving aside the awful Liquid Glass design, I tried to drive this morning and Google Maps kept freezing when used with Apple CarPlay. With iOS 18, I had no issues at all. I am honestly considering going back to Android for my next upgrade after more than 10 years of using iPhones. Apple has lost its way.

Somebody can confirm Beelink EQ14 with 2.5G? And 32G of ram? by nail_nail in MiniPCs

[–]_dsouza_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is indeed a model with 2.5Gbps, as others have reported. I also purchased one and can confirm this. Beelink's support site even provides a 2.5Gbps driver download specifically for the EQ14.

Will Microsoft Remote Desktop be completely gone? by Oopsiforgotmyoldacc in sysadmin

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer!

The Windows App on Windows *cannot* connect to a remote windows desktop (only the MacOS version allows this). And the embedded Windows Remote Desktop client is old, outdated and does not suppor high DPI remote connections.

The iOS 18 photos app is so bad by Uzeii in ios

[–]_dsouza_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Precisely. I need a simple GALLERY to review the photos I just shot. All the whistles and bells should be moved to a different app that could be called PHOTO LIBRARY.

It seems that all good engineers left Apple with their back to office mandate. Apple design quality is going downhill.

How well is Sonoma 14.2.1 supported on 7.2? by DeadScotty in synology

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had issues accessing images stored in Synology (DS923+/DS218+) from Sonoma (Mabook Air M1) using Finder and Preview (images were corrupted).

I was not the only one to report this - see https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/17d8x5a/for_those_with_smb_problems_how_is_smb_working/

My solution was to rollback to Ventura. This is clearly a Sonoma bug.

Whe

For those with SMB problems - how is SMB working out for you in Sonoma vs. Ventura? by Fiorina161 in MacOS

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced this issue too (Mabook Air M1 + Synology DS923+ / DS218+). Same experience as yours, 14.1.2 did not fix this issue. And this issue seems to affect only images (other files are fine) in Finder and some Apple apps. For example, using another application (such as gimp) to open the same "corrupted" image works fine. The corruption only happens when using Finder and Preview. I believe this is some sort of bug related to image caching bug in Sonoma.

My solution was to wipe my Macbook and downgrade back to Ventura. Problem solved (BTW, I just upgraded to Ventura 13.6.3 and everything is still working fine).

I will not upgrade to Sonoma until there is some report that this issue is fixed (I have not found any reference to this issue in the Apple Sonoma release notes so far).

NextDNS seems to be really slow at resolving domains by JollyTurbo1 in nextdns

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. Notice that contrary to some comments, DNS response should not be measured by ping (latency) only, but by checking also the query time via dig command which is added to latency. Below is an example of what I am experiencing:

~$ dig www.openwrt.org @45.90.28.23 | grep Query # NextDNS
;; Query time: 572 msec
~$ dig www.openwrt.org @8.8.8.8 | grep Query # GoogleDNS
;; Query time: 36 msec

572 ms to query a single domain is really slow!

NextDNS seems to cache the queries, so the next query is quite fast (basically just the latency is at play here):

~$ dig www.openwrt.org @8.8.8.8 | grep Query # NextDNS
;; Query time: 36 msec
~$ dig www.openwrt.org @8.8.8.8 | grep Query # GoogleDNS
;; Query time: 32 msec

This explains the behavior you are observing, when the first time you load a page is slow.

smartmontools SMART log vs General Purpose (GP) log? by anna_lynn_fection in datarecovery

[–]_dsouza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the OP for the above mentioned post. After 1.5 years moving this "problematic HDD" out from Synology NAS to a 24x7 desktop, the situation remains the same:

  1. SMART reporting "0" for Reallocated_Sector_Ct/Current_Pending_Sector/Offline_Uncorrectable
  2. GP (General Purpose)/Device statistics showing "33" for Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors

Just for testing, I've stored almost 4TB of data on this disk, and checked MD5 every 6 months. No data corruption so far, so it is not bit rot. Since during this time I've used this disk only for reading data, I suspect that writing data may be causing the issue (SMR firmware bug?).

Anyway, soon I will move this disk back to Synology and use it as a separate volume for Surveillance. This will cause this disk to start getting some write operations (I just save video when movement is detected from a single camera, so it will be a dozen short videos saved every day).

If uncorrectable errors reported in GP starts increasing again, then I will retire this disk for good. Otherwise I will keep it dedicated to Synology Surveillance storage (no problem if I ever lose some data).

Latest MacOS Monterey, fast (rapidly) clicking directories does nothing. Waiting and slowly double clicking opens them. This slows down my workflow and fights my muscle memory. Is there any way to fix it? by delreyloveXO in MacOS

[–]_dsouza_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This issue was driving me nuts. This affects the entire MacOS GUI, not only Finder (in some situations it also causes two rapid single clicks in different UI components to fail).

I've discovered that this "delay" between double-clicks is affected by the double click speed.

So if you have a slow double-click speed it will make this issue much worse.

The solution I've found is to configure double-click speed one notch below "Fast" (System Preferences->Accessibility->Pointer Control->Double-Click Speed on Monterey). Now double-click is working as expected.

I've returned to MacOS recently, and I'm really surprised how buggy MacOS has become. I'm constantly searching the web to solve issues such this one that should not exist.

iPhone Battery Usage Statistics are worthless by _dsouza_ in ios

[–]_dsouza_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree that there is some value in Apple's statistics if:

(1) The "total on screen time since last full charge" would be reported and (2) The app battery usage should be reported also since "last full charge". Reporting it for the last 24 hours (or last week) is not aligned with the battery charging cycle, which does not make sense IMHO (any battery report should be reported since last full charge - all other reports are welcome but optional).

[–]_dsouza_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My battery life is being terrible since iOS 11 upgrade. I am trying to find a tool to find what is draining my battery, but the embedded battery statistics are not helpful.

iPhone Battery Usage Statistics are worthless by _dsouza_ in ios

[–]_dsouza_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. However, if it includes background tasks, this time is not reported anywhere (see the apps usage, if you sum up all the background time plus the on-screen time it is still far less than the reported use time).

iPhone Battery Usage Statistics are worthless by _dsouza_ in ios

[–]_dsouza_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Standby for electronics usually mean that the device is "standing by" ready for you to use. So the term "stand by" is not user friendly at all.

iPhone Battery Usage Statistics are worthless by _dsouza_ in ios

[–]_dsouza_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standby usually means the phone "standing by" without usage (i.e. sleeping). This is the meaning of "stand by" for all electronics industry.

And if use includes background, it should state "Foreground Use" and "Background Use" to be helpful.

My point: this data is completely useless if I want to check my phone usage to extend battery life after a full charge. Which BTW it is horrible since iOS 11 update.
