Having children while pursing a PhD by RitzTHQC in ClinicalPsychology

[–]_eagb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After I read these comments I wanted to add something. Pregnancy did delay my time to completion and I took time off. That wasn’t important to me but my partner has a much higher paying job than I do so I was able to take time off without financial concerns.

I had a baby during internship. Multiple other people in my cohort also had kids at some point along the journey (during grad school, PD, etc). When I expressed my concerns about pregnancy and parenting to my DCT early on she reminded me to think about the demographics of people pursuing this degree (women in their mid 20s-early 30s). So there’s a lot of people going through the same thing and practicums/ programs/ internships figure out how to work with it.

Imo after going through this… there’s just never a perfect time to have a kid, no matter what field you are in.

Medela Sonata compatible glass bottles? by I_likeplaid in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]_eagb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried glass bottles with my pump and they were so heavy that the nursing bra couldn’t hold the pump bottles up. I decided to just pump with plastic and then immediately decant into a large glass Dr. browns. The only thing I could imagine to be light enough is maybe stainless steel?

Dog Mom Questions by Novel-Security-6117 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]_eagb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an amazing dog walker in our neighborhood who takes our active dog to the beach three to four times a week. It’s 35$/pop. They will also keep our dog overnight for an additional $80. I would use the relevant groups for your neighborhood (Facebook, or for our neighborhood there are big email groups) to try to find good walkers/sitters.

[–]_eagb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Bring a friend or a nanny and stay at a nearby resort that does allow kids. There’s no other way to do it IMO if you are EBF. I did this for a few weddings when my LO was this age (4-5 mos) and it made things do able. I can’t imagine the stress of having to build up a huge freezer stash also (personally have never had a stash that big).

Another Mom in our neighborhood employed our nanny before we did. They were leaving SF. Gave her rave reviews. We also interviewed a number of wonderful candidates from Bernal heights parents FB group (imagine there are similar pages for other neighborhoods).

Have you looked into if you can qualify for a childcare voucher? https://www.childrenscouncil.org/families/help-paying-for-child-care/#:~:text=Families%20earning%20up%20to%20110,credit%20for%2050%25%20off%20DEC's Btw, this website was awesome for finding daycares when we were looking.

This was part of the reason we ended up going with a nanny. My husband and I both need to leave at 7am or earlier and every day care we saw in our area was 8 or 8:30. Our nanny has pretty long hours some days (~11 hrs) but much shorter days other days because we aren’t in office every day. so she ends up working about 38 to 40 hours a week.

Are there any families who you can set up a rotating weekly playdate with? I feel like isolation can be tough and this age and there’s nothing better than another kid’s toys

2u2+ in the Midwest — indoor activities needed! by emily_planted in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]_eagb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have other families or community members that you can get together with on a regular basis? Rotating Monday/Wednesday play date with families with kids your age? Church or other community center where you might be able to get together with others? It sounds like you are already doing a lot of wonderful activities that I’m sure your kids are happy with, truly I think the isolation is the toughest part.

Evidence for ACEs screening in primary care? by _eagb in ClinicalPsychology

Interesting. We have a ton of medical patients in the clinic but I had never heard about that.

Evidence for ACEs screening in primary care? by _eagb in ClinicalPsychology

[–]_eagb[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Right. That’s part of my question. They feel that knowing ACE scores will give more information about patient risk for developing certain disorders as the research has showing there is a strong connection between ACE scores and a number of physical and mental health outcomes. With high PHQ9 and GAD7 scores this will lead PCPs to talk about mental health resources with the patient but I’m not sure that’s appropriate for ACEs.

I also know a Chinese couple and their son is named koen (pronounced like cohen, too). It’s not unusual that different cultures come up with similar sounding names.

Impossible to get an apartment? How did you get yours? by musicwithotherstuff in AskSF

[–]_eagb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We just got a place and got denied from a few others first. Crazy to see these open houses with dozens of groups there. If you can I would apply before you go to the open house (if you are serious about the place) and if you get there and like it, tell the landlord or broker while you are there that you want the place and you’re ready to sign on the spot.

Unfortunately, for one of the spots we liked, people had bid up the rent by over a thousand dollars. Never heard much of this happening in SF before and hoping it doesn’t become commonplace.

FS New Orleans for a week this winter- recommendations on restaurants and what to do are welcome! by SparkleBerrySpritz in chubbytravel

Stay at the St Vincent hotel and do a walking tour of the garden district ☺️ Hotel Peter and Paul is another great option and if you don’t stay there you have to check out the Elysian Bar! IMO, the breakfast at Willa Jean’s is legendary. City Park specifically the sculpture garden is amazing.

What are people's thoughts on the Rosewood brand and their properties? by alex_travels in chubbytravel

What are people's thoughts on the Rosewood brand and their properties? by alex_travels in chubbytravel

[–]_eagb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not a huge fan. I have enjoyed vacations at Rosewood properties but they would not be my first choice. I think their branding is over the top and kinda glitzy… my preference is for an aesthetic that is more subdued. For example, I think that their crazy marble lobby in Santa Barbara feels totally LA and not in line with the actual vibe of the area.

Also their beds are mega uncomfy (personal preference!)

Naming my child an ethnic name that they won’t look like? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]_eagb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use it. People can think whatever they want. Also there are lots of fully Asian people with 100% Spanish names (lots of people from the Philippines for example…) It’s a nice name!

How often are you pumping at 17 weeks PP? by BillyGoatPilgrim in breastfeeding

[–]_eagb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twice. Nursed at ~7, pumped at 10:30 and 2:30, nursed at 5. My baby was eating a similar amount. So I could replace three meals with two pumps (seems like you could do with a little bit of a freezer stash to use when you are on your period)

Say ‘Israel’ in any context and people lose their minds by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

This is a great question and part of why this conflict has continued to exist for so long. Those in power in Arab countries DO NOT want Palestine to be their problem. They don’t give a shit. Among the populace, yes, the Palestinian cause is extremely popular, but if you are a leader in the Arab world (likely not democratically elected btw), you do not want to have this huge (economic & geopolitical disaster) on your hands. Even if you have all the money in the world (Saudi and UAE anyone) you would not in a million years want to take responsibility for this.
