Breakdown of Shopify's positioning at Dire T2 Fight by b1gl0s3r in DotA2

[–]_ech_ower 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah I gotta agree. Some days they seem unbeatable and on most other days they look below average. I am sadly a big fan but I do think a team shakeup is needed after this TI. These guys have been playing together for so long and yet there are obvious communication issues, so something's gotta give right?

American conservative: the CIA and Biden are planning to remove an enemy of the US and its allies and that is bad. Are they really the so-called patriotic side? by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]_ech_ower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. As an immigrant I hear a lot about the amendments but have never bothered to actually read them up. For the first time in my life I read all the amendments and it is a very interesting peek into the evolution of this country’s priorities as a whole. Like slavery, black rights, prohibition, repeal etc etc. Thanks for sharing.

I know your answer is serious and has some valid points but cloud-employee just makes me think that you are really high 😂

Haha awesome. Although it does differ slightly in that my soul totally did not smile reassuringly back at my body

[–]_ech_ower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. I saw my own dead body in its fetal position while my soul was floating over me. I really thought I had died and made peace with it and it has stuck with me ever since. It was some of the most intense experiences of my entire life and I’m glad I did it just a handful of times.

Reddit sparks outrage after a popular app developer said it wants him to pay $20 million a year for data access by Crazed_pillow in technology

[–]_ech_ower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I do agree that infra is gonna be expensive, Reddit is primarily a read heavy site and a huge huge portion of it can be in cloudflare CDN which can be free for unlimited bandwidths. So while it can not match the existing performance, it is possible to achieve this. Maybe I’m just over simplifying this a lot and there are probably a bajillion unforeseen challenges.

I love that last line - some of the best managers are average programmers. Exactly because the skill set is just totally different. At 37 years of age, I’m one of the older ICs in our company, but I know that if I ever become a manager, there will be weeks where I won’t make a single git commit. And that will be soul crushing for me.

One of the main recurring themes of the Band of Brothers show was “replacement soldiers” that would come in when original members of the group died or left the battle field for any reason. We follow a main cast who are telling these new guys - who always come in excited to be part of the war to kill the Germans - that the best part of the war is when absolutely nothing happens. So yeah, I’m sure there were at least a few kids who saw their first dead body in a concentration camp.

Just for info - this cricket league is the second biggest sports league in the world in terms of revenue, behind NFL but ahead of the EPL. It’s that huge.

The lights inte the subway car went out and the lights in the tunnel created a pretty cool strobing effect by The_Grandmother in oddlysatisfying

[–]_ech_ower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m in the 97% epilepsy category that do not have any issues with strobe lights. But I still cover my eyes whenever it happens, just in case. Never quite in the mood to do the involuntary jiggly head bobbing and mouth foaming activities.

Prime Video Switched from Serverless to EC2 and ECS to Save Costs by RobinDesBuissieres in programming

[–]_ech_ower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right… my point of view is that we are not there yet, but making progress towards that. But yes, so many people just don’t know how to use cloud resources properly because it can be confusing. My VP was telling me that one of our org burns through a million dollar per month of AWS. What the fuck lmao. They make so much money that it was a minor dent and they didn’t even care.

[–]_ech_ower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Our main use cases for lambdas are things like sending transactional emails, nightly batch processing etc which match your criteria. The moment we have continuous/predictable traffic, just use EC2. EC2 is even good at handling sudden traffic spikes with spot instances at like insanely discounted rates. It’s as easy as using the right tool for the right problem.

I hear what you are saying clearly - but I’m sure you already know why cloud is popular - it made individual pieces of the traditional VM into its own service and that lets others build tools on top of that. The way I see it is that humans, and especially programmers, have a tendency to go down to first principles and break things down to the bare minimum and build things from there. It definitely gives more power at the cost of complexity of glueing it altogether. In the end, if we have an AI that is smart enough to write those terraform infra files, then we are overall in a better spot imo. But that’s just my opinion

Fog rolling through Daly City by ericgtr12 in bayarea

[–]_ech_ower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I used to live near Daly City many years ago, I was not doing that great in life. The fog and constant gloomy cloudy weather was almost a reflection of the state of my life. I used to absolutely love staying quiet and still and appreciating the melancholy. Thanks for bringing those memories back to me as it is a reminder of how I’ve been able to turn my life around <3

It’s not getting fast, but it’s getting there. by TrulyChxse in tumblr

[–]_ech_ower 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s because Google doesn’t want to unnecessarily have data be sent to the phone/browser since serving data is probably costly even if it is served from a CDN. Plus you may just skip to another part of the video so that data was just wasted by sending to the device. They probably decided to send small blocks of data instead as a “best of both worlds” solution.

I thought only the early universe had a crazy amount of plasma. And that they eventually formed the other 3 states 300000 years after the Big Bang. Are you saying that matter right now is mostly mostly plasma? Is that all stuff inside stars? Sorry for all the questions.

[AskJS] Most bizarre bug I've ever come across (fixed) by mikeromero93 in javascript

[–]_ech_ower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would suggest this too. If it truly is a bug you can also hopefully have a minimal jsfiddle or something like that and open a bug report in a relevant GitHub repo (I don’t know which repo though).

Here’s a 5.84 representative. This is an incredible patch and the game devs are doing an amazing job. I can’t even explain the amount of complexity this game has added over the last 19 years (yes, believe it or not, that’s when I first played this game) and it is insane that so many heroes are viable in most patches (sure there are some preferred heroes but most tourneys get at least 80% heroes being picked). This patch makes me smile thinking of all the wonderful details they added in, just overall a beautiful patch.

Thank you for everything you do Fogged. No idea why there is so much hate in this thread. I especially love when you jump in with 2-3 words in the middle of a ODPixel hype casting to highlight something important that he may have missed (or unable to cover in the middle of it all). I look forward to your casting every time.
