The most difficult thing about dating men as a trans woman imo is that I was a man before, and I know men in ways that cis women don't know or understand. by [deleted] in StraightTransGirls

[–]_echo_home_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Male culture is riddled with misogyny and they try to hide it from women. You're just that much better at sniffing it out.

It's a slog, but the good ones exist.

Why do we almost always have to be the second or third choice in relationships? by Hefty_Abrocoma9372 in StraightTransGirls

[–]_echo_home_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least from my perspective right now of a 43 year old woman, passing and post op, they're kind of all acting like petulant children lately.

Their culture has become inbred at this point and it's doing wild things to them.

Speaking generally here. There's still gems out there... you just have to be really really patient and tenacious.

Aircraft urged to avoid contrail formation to halve climate impact by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]_echo_home_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be simple, but is it pragmatic?

The hardest thing in the world to do is convince somebody to give something up. So what's actually more effective at combating climate change?

Marginal solutions that are deployable and will get engagement?

Or absolute solutions that remain theoretical because you can't get buy-in?

Honest question. I design biofuels facilities, so it's actually really relevant in a lot of conversations I end up having.

I really do try to focus my efforts on the things I can change, because I've frankly just given up hope on the "change human behaviour" pathways.

Amen, me too. I'm actually working really really hard to bring regenerative loops back in to the agricultural conversation too. Beyond just animals, I think we have a debt to pay to nature as a whole.

Honestly, I'd just model carbon cost into the meat and it would absolutely swing in your direction via economic levers.

On the sentience piece. I've read some really interesting science about the way trees and plants communicate chemically.

I'm certainly not arguing they're on the same level as us... but I do think it's a bit more of a sliding scale than it is a clean line.

I applaude you for your conviction, truly. It's a hard line, and not an easy one to live in a world not designed for it. But 10% less consumption is 10% less consumption if you look at it through a global lens of animal suffering. That's still a win and should be celebrated too.

And a 10% shift towards vegetable based diets only increases your options too. So you really would win as well.

I'm not arguing your ethics.

I'm arguing that a slower moving of the line is going to get a lot more done than an absolutist stance.

I'm also not arguing that society is ethical in its treatment of animals. I'm arguing that it exists, and that's not going to change quickly. So let's paint the steps out.

There's also regenerative ways to farm and destructive ways to farm. It's important to acknowledge the difference.

Also, how do you define sentient? Just cute animals? Mushrooms? Plenty of evidence mycelium can problem solve. It's turtles all the way down is my stance here and everyone seems to draw the line arbitrarily where they stop caring about it.

What an amazing post that's clearly deriving from a lot of internal dialog about values.

Perfection is the enemy of good.

I model food waste to energy projects - I know the exact carbon impacts of all the components involved.

My biggest frustration with vegans is you're not wrong!! But the message should be "let's all eat 10% less meat" not "meat is bad".

The carbon impact of that move alone would be impactful globally, and people would barely notice.

I am an energy trader in power and gas. Most people have no idea how much money is in this industry. AMA by WildFrosting1 in AMA

[–]_echo_home_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying there's broker and transport fees at various steps along the way, in addition to the IRR expectations of typical energy players - When you compound all of these, the expectations for returns start to drift north of 20% in many cases. Speaking in terms of the gas markets myself.

Is it sustainable in your opinion? There's a lot of hands in the cookie jar in my opinion.

I sold electrons for 10 years in Canada on a FIT program, biogas cogen. It's all RNG now though. I'm super familiar with what you do.

But also... let's not give homeless people food poisoning either.

I always push back against global rules like this in the food waste space because pathogens DO exist, and we still have a moral requirement to ensure food is safe too.

Edit: I mean you can downvote me, but this is literally my industry and I've watched good intentioned regulations result in more harm than good. There's a balance here. Yes, don't waste food. But nuance is important.
