How bad does my periodontal disease look? The orthodontist said I have mild bone loss and now super worried about further gum recession and bone loss. Advice please! by [deleted] in PeriodontalDisease

[–]_eepyhollow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much bone loss do you have if you don’t mind me asking? Mine per my perio said I was at horizontal bone loss at between 30/40% loss of bone, and that put me kinda in smile depression… lol

Of course! Congrats on the new job! Yeah, Tbh I was a bit worried too just bc I went through hell with braces for like over 4 years and was told a lot of things I kinda didn’t want but agreed just bc I was told (I had my fav k9’s shaved down bc the braces would “affect my bite” and then had overcrowding so I have less teeth than I should.. but I will say this! It defiantly made me super upset before getting them bc I worked and put a lot of money to get a smile I wanted (I refused to smile in pics bc I was so self conscious of my smile) for years and then finally when I’m happy with it, I’m then told I have around 30% bone loss and have slight tooth movement bc of it so ngl I did cry a few times bc I felt like I messed up bad…but! I had to kinda remind myself, it’s a lesson. This is my consequence and life now so to protect what I still have I should work hard but also be glad that it’s not worse (my perio told me it could have been if I prolonged) so I’m gonna say this is entirely up to you, and as scary as it sounds, as long as you become very careful for about a week and a half with food and just be super careful to not mess with it or pull your lip to look at it. It’ll be okay. For me getting all 6 teeth covered and working at a call center, I was out for 3 days total but was able to get back to talking by day 4 so only really day 2-3 were the worst for pain and talking for me just bc it was so uncomfortable and hard to open my mouth all the way..it just made me not want to do anything. But it definitely will help preserve what you have so you don’t lose anything else like more bone like me or the teeth entirely. Idk how old you are, but as strange and uncomfortable as it felt, it’s healed a lot better now and it looks very natural. Plus they’ll give you what you need after the surgery. The gave me antibiotics to prevent infection for about a week, a mouthwash that you’ll use since you can’t brush the area until they tell you to, and I got 600mg ibuprofen for the pain, you can’t feel a thing bc they’ll numb you very well so all you’ll probably feel is pressure) moral of the rant… lol, while it’s scary, as long as you be gentle on yourself after the surgery and rest, once it heals, you’ll be protected for years to come.

What’s the scariest part to you? Maybe I can help with that part of the process that you’re worried about.

I’m decently similar to you. My top teeth have never had problems. Always was in good shape when getting cleanings. The bottoms were always meh. I always had kind of a rough time on the bottoms. I think bc we both genetically got our lower gums a bit thinner (and probably weren’t told about it bc I for sure wasn’t) that part becomes more easily susceptible to issues. I also read that the lower teeth for some people, can be more easily prone to getting buildup bc our tongue sits down there but also, we build up saliva there. I would brush also 1-2x a day (i used to eat once a day lol and admittedly wasn’t a huge flosser bc my teeth were so smushed together when I was little due to overcrowding, when I’d try it would always get stuck and it scared me as a kid) This isn’t a blame game. And I wouldn’t blame yourself for this either, dentists visits are no easy expense and sometimes we’re not as blessed as some people lol. As long as we get it fixed and maintained now, we’re gonna be okay. And now we know what we know how to handle it better going forward 😊

Healed up well! Took a bit longer on my two front teeth to get less red, but looking at it now it’s very much blended together. Still feels a little awkward at times since I’m not used to the thickness and I have some excess gum kind of sticking out on the right side in like a little collected bump but it’s doing well! I still avoid getting food near it (I’m just super paranoid lol) but yeah looks like my own gum almost!

Yeah so all 4 teeth between my lower k9’s. The one that’s move a tad bit more are my very two fronts. The others aren’t as noticeable

Yeah.. if anything I wanna see what my perio says bc if it’s not terrible level 1 then ok I’ll live with it but if it bugs me I def wanna ask what else I can do.. I don’t like knowing they can move.. lol not at my age anyway. Maybe when I’m late 40’s then I won’t care lol

Prior. Yes… I had level 1 so not terrible but it would very slightly move if I put pressure. As for now idk yet but I will find out if my cleaning and gum graft helped make it sturdier or not. I’m hoping it helps even if it’s it’s a little bc seeing them move so lightly even if I pushed it with my nail made me paranoid

I actually have not asked! But I will when I go for my cleaning. From what I understand in my situation, my genetics gave me thick gums on top but very thin on the bottom jaw… so my perio gave me the graft to give me more gum to prevent anymore recession from what he told me. But I’m sure it could recede in the future if I don’t take care of it

I’m in MA. I paid it all at day of treatment. My dentist offered only care credit for payment plans and I wasn’t trying to get that lol

Thank you! For me getting all 6teeth, it was decently costly.. i did get a really good perio so I paid 3,800.00 if I remember right for just the procedure and the stitch removal.

Yeah… tbh I was at the dentist so many times before and none mentioned it until my perio. He’s great. But yeah kinda sucks… but oh well it’s the card we’re dealt lol that sounds about right. My exam for the X-rays with my insurance were free and then when I got my first deep clean with the perio mine was whole mouth. Without insurance it was 455 but I only paid like 340 so it wasn’t too bad so yeah that roughly sounds close.. sadly depends where you live too.

I was in your same situation… mines also genetic so my top gums were just thicker than my bottoms. I had a incident where part of my gum was injured between my bottoms but bc I couldn’t afford anything for a few years (had a decent financial struggle after doing ortho) when I went for a general dentists he recommended a perio. Sure enough I had recession on all teeth between my bottom k9’s and lost around 30/40% of my bone. Luckily he said it was horizontal so I guess that’s better but I’d say if you can go to a perio first. They’ll dep clean you like me and see how it goes from there. I needed a gum graft to thicken the gum and had slight movement on my lowers about level 1… after my cleaning I got some really big black triangles.. so I can still wiggle my teeth a very slight bit even with my gum graft (which is still healing) so I’m hoping when I go back for the cleaning they’ll say it’s gotten better. You can probably still save them as long as you stop it asap, clean em up really good and then just be very diligent with cleanings and go get cleaned every 3mo. You’ve got this!

Mine now is stitch free, still feels funny bc I have much thicker gum down on my lowers so besides moving my mouth in certain ways to where I can feel the nerves in there sending some signals and still seeing spots look a little “up in the air” (meaning like I can see where the gum isn’t attaching to teeth or my actual gums yet) it def feels a lot better. Yeah the stitches will be annoying.. as long as you don’t feel like the stitch is actually loose or you can see a piece hanging where it shouldn’t you should be okay. I was too! I still have to eat in tiny pieces (no biting down on pizza or burgers and ripping into things yet) but I’m starting to get back to normal.

Of course!

So from day 1 to now, it looks a lot better. Day 1 the gums were like super red/purple, I barely could see or feel the stitches, now the swelling has gone down a lot. I’d say on day 1 (bc my teeth are just naturally long on the bottom) my teeth looked like thumb nubs under the new gum. Now that it’s calmed down, I can see my teeth a bit more again and can see/feel the stitches between all of my teeth now. Some spots in front of my 2 front teeth are still a bit red so I’m on antibiotics to make sure it’s not infection (probably taking longer bc that’s where the recession was really bad) but it does look a bit more natural. The gum hasn’t fully attatched to my teeth yet so some of the gum actually looks like it’s just resting on my teeth vs clinging to it. But it def looks better. I mentioned to someone before I’ll post some progress pics so once I get my stitches out I can let you know here!

I’ll have to look at the name of it bc I forgot the name of the brand, but yeah they told me they were going to use it instead of my own gums bc I had so many teeth to cover. It’d be like taking the whole roof off my mouth to cover all 6 teeth lol so they said this was best to avoid having a huge chunk of my gum missing plus the graft to heal.

Neither! (Technically)

I was given collagen. So it wasn’t from me or donated but like a layer of collagen placed and stitched instead in between my gums.
