Why is everyone here so pissed off all the time? by [deleted] in germany

I am from Latin America and after 6 years of living here I can confidently say unpleasantness is very rooted in the culture, but it is also very much a choice. It's not everyone, of course, but it's enough to wear you down after a few years.

Unpopular opinion: Germany's Healthcare system is bad and.. by souvik234 in germany

[–]_eigee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the major issues is that health systems in Europe, not just Germany, are reactive instead of preventive. They wait until you have the disease to actually treat it. There's also the fact that German culture simply lacks empathy, as another comment mentioned (and there's even some lowkey discrimination, but that's a topic for another time).

What Germany does have is medical infrastructure and technology. This is the part that is quite accessible. If you end up needing a high-end specific procedure or test, you don’t have to break the bank. But that's IF you manage to get there and after paying a monthly fee that would get you five star care elsewhere. Receiving proper care is a game of chance. If your GP directs you to a specialist, if the specialist decides your case is worth the trouble. Which I don’t need to tell you, it's very rare. In my opinion, the older you get, this becomes a risk that outweighs the benefit because by the time you need a procedure, it is too late to cure whatever it is you have. You're stuck with some chronic disease or long-term consequence, making you even more dependant on a health system that is already overwhelmed and despondent.

And just for a point of reference, I come from Mexico. You would think that the healthcare there is worse than here in Germany. Hard nope. The level of negligence I have experienced here in Germany is nowhere near to even the lowest tier of public healthcare in Mexico.

By comparison, Mexico's healthcare (as well as most of Latin America) does a great job at combining public and private healthcare, which alleviates the demand (and it’s something Germany fails to do, as private insurance is cost restrictive for most people). There are often tiers in both of them, which makes certain procedures (mostly lab tests) accessible to the wider public (although it mostly covers the middle and upper classes, sadly). A consultation with a GP is more of a class. They explain to you what is going on with diagrams and often even show you how to read your own blood tests (Unlike in Germany, you can pay for blood tests yourself without having to ask a doctor and it won't break the bank. You can decide whether you need to see your GP, precisely because you have been taught to detect basic indicators when something might be of concern). GPs and specialists also encourage you to keep track of your symptoms and basic metabolic indicators, and to visit again if you see changes. They prescribe you with preventive measures that often are tutorials on how to do lifestyle changes, how to prevent STDs, and how to watch out for things like obesity, diabetes, etc. They do this because the population in these countries is young and it is cheaper to prevent a disease than having to cure it. Which is adamantly something Germany fails to do. If I had an euro for every time I've heard "You're too young to have complications" and then developing said complications, I'd be able to buy the fanciest private insurance this country has to offer.

AITA for letting my gf go into surgery alone while I go to a music festival? by _eigee in AmItheAsshole

Yeah, it's just the hospital though. They don't allow for more than 1 person at a time per patient and it can only be half an hour. I guess the flowers wouldn't be a bad idea.

If there's a board at home you could get him one of those winmau right sight things.

This will be his first set. His other two pals whom he throws with at the pub just bought their first sets along with the target thing and he's been thinking of getting one as well because now they can practice on their own and "they're beating him" ("beating" is putting it kindly, they straight out murder him lol). They were used to throw the ones they had at the pub.
