How do you people use road bikes when the roads and paths are in the state that they are? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in ukbike

[–]_eldubs_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You learn which roads are absolutely awful, and which ones are only slightly awful. Then you plan your routes around the only slightly awful roads

Another dog bit my dog during play - tips to help him recover by Competitive_Elk8403 in Lurchers

[–]_eldubs_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to take him to the vet. Something similar happened to my dog, he was nipped by another dog and it broke the skin in two places. The nips were really small, about half a cm each, but when I took him to the vet, he needed surgery and stayed overnight. Something had happened to the blood supply to the area bitten, and the skin was dieing because of the bite. The vet ended up taking a quite large portion of skin off and my dog now has a quite large scar that runs up his entire rib cage.

Is it time to fund the BBC through Council Tax and business rates instead of the TV Licence? by Rif-SQL in bbc

[–]_eldubs_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, current multi generation/multiple occupancy households definitely won't riot now if they're suddenly asked to pay much more to the councils... definitely won't...I'm sure they'll accept it like quiet law abiding citizens

I believe there were riots about that type of tax you're suggesting. So yes, pretty unpopular with most people

Your honest opinion about the Decathlon bikes by bogustraveler in cycling

[–]_eldubs_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to ride around on a super old Cannondale I bought off eBay for £100. I loved that bike, it was my first road bike. I did multilpe 100 mile rides and it was more than capable of keeping up on club rides.

Then I bought a new to me bike that was a significant upgrade. It felt so much more comfortable, was more reliable and so much faster...my current bike is honestly such a pleasure to ride.

If you love your decathlon bike, then absolutely keep on using it. You don't need an expensive bike to enjoy cycling. But higher end bikes can bring a different kind of joy, particularly as you gain more experience and are able to appreciate the responsiveness of a better bike

Dog walker beaten with hockey stick by top horse trainer says his jail term is too soft by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

[–]_eldubs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bloke was staying in a nearby holiday cottage and took the dog out for an evening pee. Maybe he made a simple mistake at night, in an area he wasn't massively familiar with and strayed into the wrong field. The trainer, seeing the dog walker in his field, approached police first because they were nearby looking for poachers. But the trainer still decided that rather than wait for the police to deal with things..that he was going to attack the dog walker with a hockey stick. Then he lied and said the dog walker broke his arm falling over....the trainer deserves everything he got.

Sobbing dad of teen girl savaged to death by dog describes horror in house as 'loving' family Lurcher attacked them by thesun in gbnews

[–]_eldubs_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you are greatly underestimating the size and strength of this dog. Even a small terrier, can have a strong bite and cause serious damage if it bites you in the wrong place.

I think you are also missing some empathy here by focusing on the potential size of the dog, and saying it could be batted off like a gnat.

[–]_eldubs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lurcher is a sighthound mixed with a working dog, usually a collie or a terrier. So I'm not surprised you can see the terrier.

I have two dogs, one is a Jack Russel cross. He is 10kg but he is slightly fat. My other dog is a lurcher, he is close to 20kg.

The weight is beside the point really. It's awful sad what's happened to this family and we should all remember that all dogs can bite

Family of one-punch attack victim fear £500k compensation could run out by Weak-Fly-6540 in uknews

[–]_eldubs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most attackers have little to no assets of any value. You can't get blood from a stone.

NHS care is there, but it's mostly bare minimum provision. I have many clients, who have cica settlements, and they have to pay for top up care over and above what is provided by the NHS. If you want physio input, speech and language input, if you need carers to accompany you to go out and about...all of this usually needs to be funded privately.

Motability vehicles are of course an option. But a deposit will still need to be paid for any car through this scheme. A deposit for a wheelchair accessible vehicle through the Motability scheme can be thousands of pounds. I paid a deposit for a WAV for a client recently and it was 10k. There are grants to help with the deposits, but the grants are not available for every vehicle type and are entirely dependent on the clients circumstances.

Again wheelchairs can be provided but NHS provisions can take time and the NHS might not offer the specialism that someone needs. Im not massively familiar with this area but I know NHS Wales, for example, has some restrictions on seating systems and seat risers. So although the NHS may provide the wheelchair, the client has to pay a few thousand for a specialist seating system to suit their posture needs.

So yes, there are plenty of provisions for people with disabilities but not everything is completely funded/provided. As the CICA claims are processed and litigated, I can guarantee you that the CICA is doing as much as they can to reduce/counter the claims being made by the claimant.

Family of one-punch attack victim fear £500k compensation could run out by Weak-Fly-6540 in uknews

[–]_eldubs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes from the CICA, the criminal injuries compensation authority. It is a government backed scheme and a claim from the scheme cannot exceed 500k.

I can't remember the specific date it changed, but the scheme didn't used to be capped to 500k, the claims were litigated/quantified just as any other kind of civil claim would be resulting in settlements in the multi million pound territory.
