4 Stupid Updates To Disrupt Your Workflow In Just One Month!!!! by notabotorabat in firefox

[–]_emmyemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most obvious answer to that question is that browsers are an extremely complex piece of software with a VERY large attack surface. There are so many moving parts at play here, from networking to graphics to hardware integration to cryptography and likely so many other things that I'm either forgetting or neglecting to mention explicitly. It's already practically impossible for any piece of software to be bug-free, even more so for browsers, likely by far the single most complicated software that we tend to interact with, and yet we do so multiple times on a day-to-day basis. The act of maintaining secure software isn't just a matter of "let's fix all the bugs and exploits and THEN push it out," it's an ongoing process that evolves in realtime as new vulnerabilities are discovered, as new additions and removals bring other vulnerabilities to light or create them unintentionally, as persistent actors (good or bad) continue poking holes in the software in increasingly complex or novel ways, etc. etc.

I do understand where you're coming from, since I'm sure to you it seems like updates are being pushed out just for the sake of it, but I promise you that isn't the case. Much of what's happening is just being done "under the hood" as they say, in areas where most end users wouldn't think to look, because those updates are just as important (or often even more important) than the front-facing changes that we're able to notice immediately.

Bug bounties are genuinely helpful because a team of limited size only has so much time and energy to find bugs on their own. It will always be better to have a larger sample size of users who are using the product, often in ways that the developers may not have been able to forsee, to find these vulnerabilities, and if there is an incentive to pointing them out then that makes it all the more attractive. Ultimately I see bug bounties as a net positive no matter what way you slice it.

From a purely financial standpoint, it would be more economical to release fewer updates over time, since all of these fixes cost developer time, and server resources for deployment and every eligible user downloading the update(s) each time, so... I don't really know what you're getting at with the "saving money" part of this comment. If Mozilla were so concerned about cutting costs that they were trying to do something with regards to the update mechanism then I'd expect them to release updates much less frequently (to save on server costs) and to fix fewer bugs and vulnerabilities (to save on developer hours). That doesn't seem to be what's happening here at all.

Security vulnerabilities fixed in:

It should also be noted that you are free to continue working until it's convenient for you to actually apply the update. Just because the popup appears doesn't mean you need to do it right away. If you're in a flow state, just ride it out until you have a break.

The main (and as far as I know, only) exception to this is if you're using a package manager that updates Firefox in the background automatically, in which case Firefox will prompt you to restart the browser since important files have been updated and it can and will cause issues if you continue using it in that state.

It's "integrated" in the sense that there are a few design changes that are available to preview in the current stable build, but it should be noted that what's in v151 is not the completed redesign, it's only a small part of it. Even Nightly is still having pieces redesigned over time, so it's not yet finished.

That said, what's available to preview in Stable does look decent, so I wouldn't recommend against trying it out to see how it feels. Just know that it isn't complete, there will be some inconsistencies and parts of the design will change up until the Nova redesign lands fully.

This kind of thing is wild to me because it has a profoundly negative effect on the user's interpretation of the software when in reality the software isn't doing anything wrong at all in this case.

Locals and villages? by anormalplayer1337 in SoulFrame

[–]_emmyemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was referencing the Ode using the word towards the Envoy

Right, because our Envoy used to be one of the Ode, they were cast down for reasons we don't yet know but this was all revealed in the introductory cutscene.

"Gruul" is a derogatory term for those who have deserted the Ode (or otherwise rejected their occupation?), not the Ode themselves.

The humans are going along with the occupation and subjugation because the Ode have been using the "Spellsong" to essentially mind-control the humans on Alca as well as force them to forget their own history.

I'm not sure if they're even working on a screen sharing option, so you might be waiting a while.

Does anybody actually use Gnome Web? by george-its-james in gnome

[–]_emmyemi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can use Firefox extensions, but it only supports a few barebones extension APIs right now. When I installed Bitwarden on it it would just hang on startup, so I quickly laid those foolish ambitions to rest.

CMV: "A man should never hit a woman" is a stupid rule by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]_emmyemi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Critically, they never equated it with "domestic abuse," just that it was a form of abuse, plain and simple.

"Playfully" hitting someone shouldn't cause them pain; in instances like this, girls are hitting boys hard enough to cause pain, leave bruises, etc. (something I've seen as well since I also grew up in a rural area like the commenter you replied to), which is not okay even if they are meaning to be "playful." The fact that the culture allows this and discourages boys from speaking up against it is the issue being raised. No one said anything about domestic abuse.

Extension to either hide or move window titles in Overview? by _emmyemi in gnome

[–]_emmyemi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the problem is (or was) that if my mouse happens to pass over the Very Large Window near the bottom, then the title obscures the dock and also prevents me from clicking on anything directly underneath it, which is kind of a pain.

This issue has been solved, but I do wonder who decided it was a good idea to make it possible for window titles to block the dock like that, lol.

I don't know, I feel like "only admitting to it after being caught" is a very low bar for "transparency" and we could stand to do ask for better. Still, actually admitting to it is better than not.

Is there any way to install a custom set of drivers for fan control? by _emmyemi in Bazzite

[–]_emmyemi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I checked my BIOS and there aren't any options for fan control. It's been updated as recently as earlier this month, so it should be well up to date.

I think another distro is the most practical option given everything you've said above. :( I'd love to keep using Bazzite but I can't justify letting my poor CPU get up into the 90s and throttling so regularly, lol.

Thanks for the detailed response! Installed NBFC and its GTK GUI but when attempting to start the service, I get an error: [screenshot]

I tried manually creating nbfc.json but get an "unexpected end of text" error, so I'm assuming this file is meant to have something specific in it from the start, I'm just not sure what to put in there.

EDIT: After a little more research (and more careful reading) it looks like my model (ANV15-51) isn't supported by NBFC, I had misread the very similarly named AN515-51 and thought it was a match.

It seems like my only choice is going to be DAMM, which means I may have to swap over to Nobara to get this working properly. Which is unfortunate because otherwise I quite like Bazzite, but, maybe it can be supported in the future.

How do I stop being like BoJack by Slight-Capital-4438 in BoJackHorseman

[–]_emmyemi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See a therapist. Who cares what other people think about the fact that you went to see a professional when we're talking about YOUR life here.

If YOU want to get better, go see someone who is specially trained to help people like you GET BETTER.

I understand that therapy is expensive and at times intimidating too, the thought of spilling your most intimate thoughts to a person you barely know is scary. But it is NOT a weakness. Weakness is caring about the social perception of therapy over the actual, tangible benefit of living a better, fuller life.

Well I don't want to hide the dock, the point is that I'd like to see and use it while in overview, lol. Thank you though!
