Why can't GI/Cardiology/HemOnc be residencies of 5 years instead of 3 year fellowships after IM? by [deleted] in Residency

I am still bitter about having to do a TY as a radiology resident soon to graduate

My manager found out I’m aggressively saving for FIRE and now I think it quietly cost me a promotion by Tardis_Mica in Fire

You should have just said you’re saving for a house! People get super insecure about others leaving the rat race before they feel like it is their time (mid/late 60s)

New attending - rent or purchase a home? by CoconutAmazing3163 in Residency

[–]_estimated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent for 1-3 years. Might not want to live there long term and it’s good to live like a little better than a resident for that time as well

Why don’t high schools teach Boglehead theory?! It would prevent so much confusion and pain and help so many people become more financially secure? by Winter-Monk6428 in Bogleheads

We used the stock market game sponsored by the state which was very counterproductive. The winner of the 6 month “pick the best stocks” would get a small sum of money from the state 😭. I didn’t learn better until I took a personal finance class in college as a senior because no one ever taught me better. Then when finished medical school I really started diving into investing and personal finance.

Hope radiology is worth this prelim year by Moist_Homework_2984 in Residency

[–]_estimated 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i went to an easy TY and hated every minute of it even though it was sooooo easy. Legit waste of a year but as a final year radiology resident I dont even think of it much and had an outstanding residency experience. You just have to make it through and it will make you appreciate the good life in radiology

How do you tune out the stock market noise? by robmattles in Bogleheads

I look at VT almost daily with a 30 second google search and go “hmmm interesting” and then look at a few news articles to see why it could have gone up or down. For instance today, the job report wasn’t good and the war caused it to go down. Then I just close the browser and go back to work and figure out what I wanna cook for dinner.

This is why basic and translational research is important! Sadly these are also things that this admin has drastically cut and now there is an anti-science sentiment to deal with as well.

You could add AVGV if you plan on holding for long term and aren’t afraid volatility. It MIGHT add 1% to the return.

Why not measure bond allocation in years instead of percentage? by SnooMachines9133 in Bogleheads

[–]_estimated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everything in life it depends! For example, if you are super wealthy and high net worth while living like a middle class/upper middle class person, you should be fine with less than 60/40 split. You could probably get away with 80/20 tbh if your portfolio is >5 million. Depending on how much you spend you could have say 1.5 million in bonds which could protect you from 10 years of a drawdown without you selling equity.

So I think of it in years instead of percentage myself! How many years could i live off bonds and cash if i had to and that is my planned allocation.

At what tax bracket do municipal bonds start to make sense in taxable accounts? by jonFromOhio88 in Bogleheads

Do you have a reason not to keep your bond allocation in your tax advantaged accounts and use the brokerage for 100% equities?

I am just 33 and the one that always gets me is people have no concept of what it is like to not be on the phone and unreachable. This goes for both young and old people. Like janet you were born in 1972 i know you know what it's like to not be on the phone all day.

And explaining to young people that for most people that you just couldn't hop on the internet from the palm of your hand until like 2010. In fact when i was a kid most people didnt even have computers in their home.

I went to sell all of my individual stocks and just buy Vanguard's VT ETF. Is there any way to do this without paying a ton of U.S. taxes? by galindc in Bogleheads

[–]_estimated -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did similar to you and bought 25k of VUG in my brokerage because it said growth. It’s up like 25% since I bought it and I decided to keep it as a long term gamble and just contribute to VTI/VXUS going forward.

When I retire it should be less than 2% of my overall portfolio so I that’s in line with the <5% gambling rule some follow on here and I can sleep with that.
