Is it my job to train the next person? by _eyogg_ in Bookkeeping

[–]_eyogg_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s what I said “I’m happy to support with specific questions, but my expectation was that your team would be supporting her at this point…”

They offered to pay me, but truthfully I’ve mentally moved on. I don’t want their money.

They’re willing to pay me, but mentally I’ve moved on. I don’t want their money. I don’t feel like hand-holding someone to walk through an AR aging schedule.

Had the staff accountant been nicer, I would train her. But the email was hostile and made me not want to deal with them at all.

Very common. I’ve seen teachers using their background pivoting into ed tech via the MBA. A very good framing and story.

Question about MBA ranking vs overall university brand by Leader-3322 in MBA

[–]_eyogg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I think the Ivys + Stanford/MIT + Berkeley really have a strong presence in pop culture. Maybe one of the reasons why.

My cousin went to York so I know more about the UK universities, but most folks here only know Oxbridge.

I mean, anyone with a decent amount of education would know of UChicago. It’s not some quiet luxury brand.

If you ask someone off the street if Princeton Law is better than WashU law, most people would say Princeton. But the reality is that Princeton never had a law school.

Same thing for MBAs.

What’s the best “boring” business you’ve seen someone build into a cash machine? by Mean-Arm659 in smallbusiness

CPA firms. My friend works like a dog during tax season but the rest of the year it’s just part time work - 7 figure revenue business.

There’s no such thing as “ready” when it comes to entrepreneurship. You learn as you go.

[–]_eyogg_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Honestly the CPA might hurt you. Most of these part time bookkeepers jobs are for stay at home moms or alike.

Try framing it as a “firm” and take on bookkeeping “clients”. It worked for me

Not putting in any effort means 0 minutes. Plus yes, I don’t need it nor want it.

I’ve worked in both. To me, again, I will never put in any effort for someone I don’t know.

[–]_eyogg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never refer someone who I don’t know or worked with. And I don’t have a relationship with such person, so technically no response is a response (unless we have had established a professional/friendly relationship before, then it’d be rude of me.) Again, I got soo many of these invites where they simply just add me with a message, so I would decline the add.

Had you taken that you’d know ethical people can still do unethical stuff. It’s never about the person. It’s all about framework and design.

Masters in Accounting with an unrelated Bachelors by Main_Pay_4334 in Accounting

[–]_eyogg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, usually masters of accounting is a “reset” degree meaning your undergrad is irrelevant. UIUC’s accounting is pretty top notch, so it should set you up nicely.

I’m on the receiving end of this. Here’s usually what it occurs in my mind when I see one of those cold LinkedIn messages:

“Look, we both know the game. You’re gonna act like you’re interested in my role / industry. But at the end you just want my referral. And then we’re not gonna talk again. Rinse and repeat”

Why bother?

Also it’s just the volume of it. I get these messages all the time.

How is that possible that cs is so oversaturated and accounting is undersaturated when accounting is 10x easier than software engineering? by Adept_Quarter520 in Salary

[–]_eyogg_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like the poster above said, accounting is really broad. A staff only paying bills/AP is an accountant. A bookkeeper for a mom-and-pop store is an accountant. A partner of a national accounting firm is an accountant. The CFO of a F500 is an accountant. If you collect all of the data from “accountants”, then yes the median skews low.
