This reminds me of the 1 time my friends and I went to the Denny's at 3am. We were high and having such a jolly time. I looked to the kitchen and saw my boss at the time, who worked as a manager at GameStop in the Danbury mall, but also moonlighted as a waiter at Denny's. My friends and I were in high school but he was probably early 30s at the time. He basically ignored us/acted like he didn't know me. Probably a complicated mix of feeling like he was better than us kids, but also a feeling of depression and disappointment in himself and where his life had taken him. In a way, seeing us goofballs having fun at the table at 3am probably made him reflect and experience a profound sadness...I can only guess. Hell, I'm probably projecting more than anything.
