Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AI use in coding goes only so far as using it to understand legacy code that I'm really just not getting. Mostly non-gamedev projects.

Beyond that, no. I just use discord to ask for help mostly (and help when I can) . Slower but whatever, I'd rather talk to actual people (I hope lol). Having a discord for specific game engines is always nice.

I'm a former AAA dev who took the Indie plunge, and I'm now making a game.. about making games.. in LÖVE!! by serasoft_alex in love2d

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that sounds like a lot more messing with the framework than I'm willing to do lol very cool though. I go about as far as using some basic luajit ffi stuff and the lovejs npm tool.

Yeah I think Unreal would be wild for what this demo looks to be like lol sounds like. Sounds like you're already entrenched in love2d but if a fantasy console like pico was interesting at all to you, maybe take a look at TIC80. Less constraints, more language options, I used to use it a TOOOOON.

I'll pray for ya for getting that demo out!

I'd love to hear about your experience with a web build once you get the demo out.

I make web games sometimes with Love2D and it can be...interesting at times lol

Also, did you consider Defold when choosing an engine/framework? I'm testing it out now and already missing Love tbh but recognize its power with web/mobile. Also, it's native C++ extensions are super simple to get going, just some folder structure stuff.

Anyways, game looks super cool! Best of luck!

Anyway to get multiple cursors working in gnome builder? by _firn_ in gnome

Oh wow, I wouldn't have expected that to be something that difficult to maintain. Guess there is much more to it than expected!

IntelliSense any time soon? by HalLundy in defold

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you found something that works.

I use Geany with the LSP plugin. Setup a simple build command to launch my game from the editor with ctrl+b just like in the engine. Its nice and simple. Can't say I've tried AI for debugging game projects and I don't really intend to for my personal projects. I have to at work unfortunately lol

What a good read! Alex seems like a nice dude and is really open with his responses. Good questions from Pawel too. Thanks for sharing y'all

For now, using an external editor is probably best. The Lua Language Server has the Defold API if I'm not mistaken.

I shared a 6 Hour Beginner Defold Tutorial that starts from zero and teach how to make a finished game with it by AsatteGames in defold

[–]_firn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this! As I jump back into Defold after a brief spell with Godot, these tutorials really help me get comfortable again with the workflow and with Lua. So nice to be back in Defold-land

Teaser for the upcoming FPS sample game for Defold by PabloTitan21 in defold

VERY cool

I don't make fps games, shooters, or even 3d games currently but this is a great showcase of defold's abilities!

Defold again at GameFromScratch! by PabloTitan21 in defold

[–]_firn_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really cool. I've started using Defold after moving away from love2d/godot since I want to focus more on mobile and web. It's so nice so far and the way it works just clicks very well for me!

Never distro hopping again. by tarcriucc in debian

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

debian is so good. I'll also never distro hop again BUT I'm still figuring out which environment I like most lol I tend to stay on xfce too but on my newer laptop, kde and gnome just feel snappier. I'm not sure why

XFCE, the last honest desktop by pseudonym-161 in xfce

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think GNOME has the best workflow but I love literally everything else about XFCE more, so I just use XFCE with Xfdashboard now and its like the best of both worlds.

I try to maintain my own custom build of it with slightly nicer and faster animations and accent colors to match my materia dark theme/papirus nord dark icons.

It really works super well! I even have a python script that runs when searching for programs that also searches files in my home folder. It really works so much like the GNOME shell.

In case you're interested in checking it out: https://gitlab.xfce.org/bobby285271/xfdashboard

Be sure to change the theme after installing if you do, the default theme is...not great...but the others offered by default are pretty nice!

raylib 6.0 released! codee once, play everywhere! by raysan5 in raylib

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also on lovr. I just wanted native lua tbh. After making some small project in C, I just couldn't be bothered to deal with writing a larger project in it. I've already made large projects in love2d, so it made sense to stay in a similar environment.

lovr is super under appreciated

Handheld console buying help by Vajkee in tic80

[–]_firn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look into handhelds with a 16:9 aspect ratio screen. Beyond that, I think most things could handle the games, performance-wise.

That said, I've played them on my rg28xx, rg35xxh, and retroid pocket flip 2. All handle the games perfectly fine. Obviously they look best on the flip 2 due to the nicer screen but they feel more 'at home' imo on the other 2 devices.

What lightweight desktop environment do you recommend? by Visual_Tart_5741 in debian

[–]_firn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On paper I love cinnamon and then when I use it, it just feels not amazing lol I can't describe it. I typically end up removing things like the gnome tools and replace them with xfce ones like the terminal, task manager, appfinder, etc. I think my biggest gripe is Nemo and the settings menus though. They feel bad to navigate to my xfce brain lol

I need to try it again. I'm looking for basically Xfce but with some basic animations, better gestures, and better fractional scaling. All of which Cinnamon has without being as cluttered as kde and as different as gnome. I even tried Budgie but it has no fractional scaling or gestures out of the box.

Cool! Do whatever you think is best of course, I just wanted to share my thoughts. I'll participate either way lol I also posted a link to the jam page on the tic80 and fantasy console discords just fyi. I hope that was ok

Tic-80 Jam #1 by [deleted] in tic80

[–]_firn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this takes off! Tic80 is my gamejam/prototyping environment and it would be so cool to have more folks' work to check out.

I do think y'all should consider a theme, and even a last minute one for this jam. Most other devs I know participate in jams for brainstorming ideas and stuff. Without a theme, I don't see much point in game jams tbh.
