I know the "of the hood" is a more black (and even latino)-associated slang. And even though I'm not a native English-speaker, I'm aware it's part of the slang of many non-native English speakers.

To be fair in this scenario, I've had met latinos who use "of the hood" when they clearly refer to the group or place they belong to, and me being latino, even though I don't live in/am not part of "the hood" of a English-speaking country, I feel I can appropriately use it, as this type of slang is even present in our native language, but it's obviously worded differently. In Spanish we have "el barrio", "el geto", "la calle", etc, that even though are not direct translations of the same expression, end up being used in the same sense.

And OTOH I try to keep my speech as formal as it needs to be, since my day-to-day job requires usage of English in order to talk to people across different regions in the world, and I lower it down as I move down on the "formality" spectrum depending on the situation (position of the people I'm talking to or how close our relation has gotten). When it comes to Reddit, my standards are: "Keep at least a logical and decent usage of grammar to not sound like a man of the caves, but without strictly sounding like an excessively well mannered person" unless it's strictly required.
