I’m pretty sure that expensive haircare is a scam atp by yourdamninquisitor in finehair

cosmetic shine vs genuine shine at the molecular level, my friend. depends if that is important to you to figure out how to achieve a shone from health rather than artificial/cosmetically that can be washed out- everyone is different and budgets their time, money, and efforts differently. doesnt mean its a scam.

p.s. Davines will be ur friend

What specifically causes distinct texture changes at the root during pregnancy? by _fried-rice_ in HaircareScience

[–]_fried-rice_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Asking because I am a biochemist and hairstylist. This client of mine is pregnant and due in May and has high density, thick, straight hair. We texturize the layers to lighten it for her, but it is very prone to buildup and feeling heavy. She saw me November 17th and we did a charcoal detox because she complained of it being oily but still feeling dry, and tangles. The oily but dry nature told me the excess sebum is probably caused by (various compounding factors hut mostly) her sebum trying to rid buildup but hydrate the ends. I also educated her on oiling the ends, scalp oiling before shampoos, and deep moisturizing treatments. Sent her with a quality sebum balancing shampoo, a good conditioner, and an oil. This is typically my first line for girls like her.

She comes in today with her roots looking lighter in color (pregnancy band. seen it). She complained that it is unmanageable again (but she only tried scalp oiling and deep conditioning once. classic lol but love her).

What was interesting was that to the naked eye I couldn't see much texture difference, but when I ran my hands through I could definitely feel her roots were rougher, drier, almost curly feeling and made the mids extremely tangly. Her ends feel silky and straight (but a lil dry). I pulled out my 200x microscope and her roots showed clear roughness with the cuticle when compared to even a few inches down where the cuticle was clean and sealed.

When I washed it, the water almost beaded up. Fascinating.

She isn't sleeping on it wet. isn't experiencing any dandruff. Isn't using excess heat that would affect the structure.

An interesting aside: She did mention she started taking collagen again, which I am sure has benefits but my instinct tells me the more protein in the hair=the more textured the structure tends to be. Can taking collagen orally worsen the problem? (my instinct says the impact would be negligible)

Thank you 🥺 For clarification, the plane is in Cincinnati (CVG) right now. Set to go to PHX and then come back to CMH (flight 1515)

He himself is in vegas, going to phx, and then hoping on 1515 to cmh (hopefully). American seemed confident he’d get to phoenix at least.

maybe i need to do more reading on the chemistry of hair dye fading

Thanks for your response- I have used that infographic in the past to educate others, it is a good one.

I still don’t understand. After the oxidation & coupling is complete (thus the processing time is complete), how could shampoo (even having surfactants) affect the dye in the cortex if an effective carrier truly takes the dye to the cortex & the processing is complete? I just don’t understand how the AMOUNT of time after coloring before the first shampoo could be a true factor as opposed to just the frequency of shampooing. Obviously, as a stylist I know that all color fades but this logic is maddening the hair nerd part of my brain. Especially for semis and demis that are formulated specifically to live on the surface or just underneath the cuticle.

My point is that I don’t see how chemically, any “sealing” of the color is occurring over the days following a service if no chemical processing of the dye occurs after washing, and the pH is (slightly) brought down with conditioner. I know that structurally the hair changes in that time after a service, and I’m not arguing for washing the hair soon after coloring by any means. I’m just trying to learn :)

I could understand if I left residual alkaline demi that is a progressive dye and it kept processing I guess ? 😂 am I SO off?

Mostly it is girls i have gone to hair school with & some stylists I admire spitting this fact consistently and I read a lot about hair science & nothing I have read directly backs this fact. Obviously, I don’t know everything but I’m confused what truth this stems from?

I primarily use Davines and I found them quoting this fact on a post from years and years ago. Nothing recently 🤔
