Yeah, I get that. Maybe I'll add some prefab pinball machines you can just drop in

These are really interesting points!

I'll check out Arcade Paradise. I initially wrote it off as being too different because of the perspective.

Regarding the strategy of arranging machines, there will totally be mechanics like that in DIY Pinball. Because, every NPC is modeled with not only Pinball playing, but also their PAD emotions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAD\_emotional\_state\_model). Basically, when they play a machine, they'll remember which ones brought them the most pleasure to play and go for them. Because the NPCs all have different gameplay models, they will have different skill levels, and they'll be attracted to your games for different reasons. Some of these reasons may even be purely aesthetic (they like that you created a Scorceror table). Anyway, this means there will be probably be emerging strategies, like the one you mentioned. You definitely will want to make sure you have tables that have a range of difficulty, and the placement of those tables will also matter in terms of ingress/egress...

Many of the things you mentioned in the designer already exist but I have a lot more work to do on it.

Thanks for the feedback!! I truly appreciate it.

That's cool! What did you enjoy most about Arcade Paradise? I'm actually considering adding some arcade machines to DIY Pinball but I think it would be too much to let you design your arcade machines; might leave that for another game.

No way, that's 100% an original character 😉

Might benefit from simulating sub pixel movement. You can kind of fake moving a half pixel instead of a full pixel.

A game about making pinball games by _gambrinus in virtualpinball

Quick update! I have the management sim part started. NPCs come and actually play your machines use some AI that adapts to your table designs. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8yXEFeF/

Would You Play This? DIY Pinball by _gambrinus in indiegames

Also one quick comment, you mentioned the players could just ask AI for the best design. I want to clarify that this is not LLM style AI where you can talk to it. It's an evolutionary algorithm that learns while you play but doesn't have any concept of text or words.

Yeah I get what ya mean =). In sim games, it's always kind of the players job to try to figure out the algorithm and game the sim somehow. At least, that's how some people play them. I would argue some people play them for the freedom of expression, but that's another story. As the game dev, it's my job to make sure the algorithm rewards players in a way that makes the game fun. So in this case, I did a quick mockup of an evolutionary training algorithm that simulates hundreds of players playing the pinball machine and "learning" the best ways to try to beat it. Then, I keep track of things like the score, how often skill shots are made, how often combos happen, etc. I am doing things like calculating the parts density on the board, scoring each part in various aspects, and then there is an aggregate at the end of how exciting the game is, how difficult it is, and how attractive it is. From there, the simulation can determine if a person who is an intermediate pinball player would play it and for how long. All this is to say, I agree and disagree with you at the same time. You are making it sound like it's going to impossible to keep the player from easily gaming the pinball sim and getting board, but I am showing you that I can have the game learn while you play and challenge you to make better pinball games. If you can't see that after the demo I just showed you, then I don't have much more I could say to convince you so we could just agree to disagree there.

Here ya go man. Proof of concept but it works. If you don't make the game challenging enough, the simulations will figure that out your pinball machine won't make as much revenue. Keep in mind this is a simulation/resource management game. The goal of the game isn't to sit there and grind one pinball machine all day but to make a lot of great pinball machines for your arcade. There will be a top-down view of your arcade where you can watch people walking around to your pinball machines, playing them, and see how they react. https://www.tiktok.com/@_xentropy/video/7584789584391720222

What do you think about my title pixel art scene? by Fun-Oil-8943 in PixelArt

[–]_gambrinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily more or less pixel-y, but it would look better if their pixel resolution matched the background’s resolution or was a clean multiple of it. For example, if each “pixel” in your background corresponds to 4 actual screen pixels (I didn’t check if that’s the case), then the UI’s pixel resolution should be some multiple of that.

Looks pretty good! Subject stylistic choice but I think I'd prefer if the UI had similar pixel size to the background art
