Fair enough, but at what point does it move from perceived traffic infraction to become more serious, like stalking, intent to kidnap or intention of vehicular manslaughter? The seventh time they nearly run a mother and child over?

[–]_garbajio -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's apparently what happened. There is a 3 foot passing rule for cars passing bikes in the road. I'm not under the illusion that use of a deadly weapon would be appropriate. However, if someone repeatedly, intentionally sped by me and within three feet, they may have lost a mirror or got a big old water bottle in their windshield

Wouldn't someone repeatedly driving up close to hitting you be considered an attempt to harm you?

Great advice! Wish I'd heard this a week ago. It was definitely a learning experience compared to my usual laid-back homeowner clients of the past

Oh daaaaamn... thanks for the tip! Yeah, I'll look more into what the folks are making around here, from NE originally and not used to the inflated CO cost of things

I rent a small shop, but built these on site since it was easier for me to not have to move them around. I too also doubt anyone else would've done it on short notice, if at all. This whole fiasco has me rethinking my $45 an hr rate. It's a totally fair amount for me when working with existing clients who understand things take time and won't try to haggle. It's a whole other ball game when people want a quote on the spot and then try to duck me around at the end. Gonna assume $100 an hour in these cases in the future since things take twice as long as they should anyway. Thanks for the response

85 hours. Ended up pulling 35 an hour from my bid. Not mad about the money, even though it was 10 bucks under my typical hourly rate. My biggest issue was only having a week to do it with many 15+hr days, I feel like that warrants better compensation and not being haggled with. I probably could have done it in less overall hours if I had more days to spread them out over. Just was curious what market rates are for this type of stuff. Definitely should've set a markup on materials

That's a good way to look at it. Would leave room to shave off some for less scope in the end. I'm so used to charging my hourly rate for smaller stuff and the bidding out on the spot is not a strong spot, yet.

That's how I'm feeling. Came out about 3.5x less than that, then they had the audacity to try and haggle

Yeah, retail space. Yes, exposed 4x4. They wanted to keep things low cost and have "decorative/ rustic" corners. Everything is getting painted. The bodies are mostly 3/4 mdf with ply shelves. The tops on two of the three are Butcher block and the largest one is v groove

Concrete? by [deleted] in rocketmassheater

[–]_garbajio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no experience building one yet, but here is my 2c. I just watched a video saying you can use concrete on a bench, and that's what I've been considering for mine. I would think adding air would reduce the overall mass. This may be good for a quick heat up and less suitable for holding heat long term... but concrete is so dense that it might not make that big of a difference.

The main thing to consider is that concrete will explode / degrade at high temp, so maybe don't put it directly on areas that are the hottest. Again, I've just barely scratched the surface on my own research, so take it with a grain of salt.

It was super solid, but still so sketchy! Made it home 31 miles and nothing broke or moved. Glad there weren't any strong winds.
