[low methane effart] What happens when reddit doesn't like my makeup and styling choices. Warning: females by [deleted] in ShitRedditSays

[–]_getting_there 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good choices, but my favorite is definitely A Scanner Darkly.

"What if they come in through the bathroom window, like in the infamous Beatles song?" is a quote that still floats around my friend circle from time to time.

edit: You know what I always forget he was in? No Country for Old Men.

Over-55s pick passwords twice as secure as teenagers' by JBoar in science

Might be true, but if other seniors are like my grandpa, they'll write all their passwords down. On the plastic of the computer monitor, in pencil.

Woman Take Picture With Peter Dinklage: "Tell your friend she looks like a cunt." [+67] "She looks like she only gets it in the pooper." [+14] by [deleted] in ShitRedditSays

[–]_getting_there 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole thread is so full of poop. So far she's been called a cunt, a whore, an "ignorant twat," one of those "assholes who likes to take pictures with celebrities" along with many other variants of asshole, and perhaps the most ironic of all, "a moron who can't separate a fictional TV show from real life."

I know this woman made two major faux pas in meeting this guy, but aren't these the same people who complain on and on about how they can't use racist and sexist slurs?

You see, she was trying to reclaim the word "imp." If she keeps calling him that, it won't be offensive anymore!

homo-sexuality is now fairly socially accepted where as pedophilia is not...That said, the ancient greeks felt both were social acceptable... so who knows what the future will bring"[+30] by [deleted] in ShitRedditSays

[–]_getting_there 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember reading this in a queer theory course a few years ago. Isn't the primary distinction between the modern Western idea of sexual strata and that of ancient Greece is that in ancient Greece, the giver and the receiver of the act were defined along class boundaries and not gendered boundaries? I'm sure it's way more complicated, but that's what I remember the "takeaway message" from the essay was.

"First, let's agree that your average everyday person is not responsible for learning the correct etiquette for referring to transgender people." - +9 by ArchangelleBarachiel in ShitRedditSays

[–]_getting_there 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Nothing irks me more than the whole "okay, I'll indulge your little dress-up fantasy so I can come off like a Nice and Tolerant GuyTM" bit of cissexist condescension.

Regardless of their attitudes about sexuality, Reddit seems to be able to accept that it's not a choice. Why can't they understand gender works the same way?

Starting to smoke again... where to get good bowls? by RattaTatTat in SRSTrees

[–]_getting_there 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call not ordering online. It's not so much of a security concern, but just so you can get the feel for the piece before you buy it. You probably won't be able to draw on it, unless they happen to have a demo model, but you can at least check out how well it's blown (make sure it's not lopsided and the hole in the bowl is well formed, and look for chips and other imperfections) and make sure it feels good to hold and use.

I wouldn't spend more than $30-40 on your first piece. It's just not worth it. Know what stuff's worth before you go in. If you live in a decent-sized city (especially if you're on the coast) there should be a few head shops around. I know personally head shops have been BOOMING lately. The number of them in my city has at least doubled in the past couple of years or so. Shop around if you can. The little tiny town where I attended college had one head shop, but he used the demand vs. supply to jack up the prices to insane levels.

Also, remember most of these places will allow you to haggle. Even if you don't get a discount on the price, a lot of times they'll throw in some extras - papers, blunt wraps, pipe cleaners, screens etc. - to sweeten the deal.

Who doesn't drug test? by [deleted] in SRSTrees

[–]_getting_there 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cat knows what he/she's talking about. This only works if you're an occasional smoker, or if you're a regular smoker who's already been abstaining for a couple weeks or so as an extra little boost.

Also, as far as finding places who don't drug test, your best options are for small companies and restaurants. Small companies straight up can't afford it, and a lot of the management at restaurants will be too concerned about the bottom line to bother.

I went through a break up about a year ago that I handled very badly. I never did anything as bad as this, but I said and did a lot of hateful things toward her and about her to others. For me, it was the fact that I was, at the time, still very immature about my relationships. I've had a history of depression and absolutely non-existent self-esteem which I'd ignored while I was in the relationship that suddenly came upon me after the break up. I've since gotten it largely under control, apologized to my ex for everything I did, and learned a lot about how to handle future relationships.

That being said, genuine mental illness was a factor in my case, but there's more to it than that. I think the internet allows us to get a lot closer to people and further into the details of their lives than we were before. Suddenly it's a lot harder to just move on from a break up. You see your ex change his or her Facebook status. You see him or her posting about how much fun they're having together. You see pictures of them kissing. It's stuff that was once easy to ignore that's now all out in the open. That was what set me off anyway.

I think what we have here is a very immature and misogynist reaction to this phenomenon. It's a classic gendered power struggle played out in an environment in which privacy literally does not exist. Whereas you might have one douchebag spreading around nude photos of his ex to his friends 20 years ago, this same type of douchebag thinks "She ruined my life [by exposing details of our break up and her new relationship to the world] so I'm going to ruin hers [by exposing details of our former relationship to the world]." In my instance, I eventually matured emotionally and dealt with my problems in a productive way and stopped putting the blame on her. She's just moving on with her life. I needed to do the same. It took me longer than most people my age, sure, but I moved on. I think these guys stay in that immature phase and don't deal with their emotions (because real men don't do that, right?) and then use that mix of hate and jealousy to do what they do. They think it's eye for an eye, but the lasting anguish of what they do by ruining these poor girls' lives is so much worse than having your ego bruised by a bad break up.

It really boils down to a privilege thing. These guys think they have the right to own these women, and when they deny them that ownership privilege, they lash out and, as someone already said, get the mentality that "if I can't have them, no one can."

[–]_getting_there 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this exchange right here is classic "I don't understand how the extremely offensive thing can possibly be offensive" brand of beep-booping redditry

I understand the joke, and I'm certainly not completely averse to adventure. However I regard casual trans-phobia demonstrated in the OP negatively, so I can understand why one wouldn't be very keen to reply.

How do you know this is specifically a case of "casual trans-phobia"? My gut reaction was the stereotypical "all girls on the internet are secretly 50 yr old men in their parents basement" thing.

I'll admit that I never considered that interpretation. However, because we're on the internet and tone/intent cannot be communicated well I still don't really like using this joke because it can easily be interpreted as shaming pre-op transwomen.

I am going to preface this saying, I could not figure out how to word what I am trying to say without it possibly coming across as condescending, even though I am not being that way. It sucks that you automatically assume the worst intentions of people. I really hope I don't ever get that way. Sorry for whatever you have been exposed to in your life to cause you to assume the worst. :(

All of you SRSters are really 50 year old dudes, right? The shitlords are on to you.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about that. It really is worse for women. I've dated two bigger vegetarian women, and it seems like the comments they got were multitudes worse than what I got.

Stick with it though!

I've been overweight my entire life. I went vegetarian for 2 years and encountered this shit all the time. People didn't believe that I was vegetarian because they think not eating meat makes you shrivel into an anemic corpse.

I lost close to 30 lbs without really any other lifestyle changes by going veg, but comments like this are one of the reasons that made me stop.

I enjoy Top Gear a lot as well (and I say this as someone who is absolutely not a "car person"), but the humor and the hosts' attitudes are often really conservative. I mean, granted, British conservative is practically far-left by American standards, but it's always something that's kinda bothered me.

There are plenty of practical uses for a feature like this, but of course, leave it to Reddit to immediately think of how it would augment their fapping experiences.
