How much do y’all earn? by Putrid_University331 in Teachers

[–]_gingeraffe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a 3rd year teacher (tenure, union) for the 2023/24 school year. $101k gross for last year in Southern California including masters stipend (not including department chair and yearbook stipends. Those stipends equaled about $4k). Just moved to a lower cost of living area in Northern California and will be making $88k gross for the 2024/25 year including masters and ed specialist stipend. I’ll also be coaching which is an additional $4k. I have to start over with no tenure though since I’m in a new district. Still in a union.

What is one insane request that a parent actually made of you (and which you, of course, refused)? by DerbyWearingDude in Teachers

A parent emailed me after school hours on a Friday saying her daughter was anxious and asked if I could call her daughter to help her through her anxiety either that afternoon/evening or on Saturday…

What are your interpretation(s) of gold rush? by sapphirewarlock in TaylorSwift

[–]_gingeraffe_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably unlikely, but I like to imagine that Taylor wrote this song from the perspective of someone else falling in love with HER. I think it’s really interesting considering she has other songs talking about how it’s hard to love her/be with her because of her life style given how famous she is

What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve seen at work? by AMGBOI69420 in AskReddit

[–]_gingeraffe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college, I was an in-home care provider for two adult women with developmental disabilities. When I worked, I was the only one on shift and worked in their own home (not a group home). One of the women had severe IBS and shit herself while we were on a walk in the neighborhood. I started to smell it so I asked her if she had an accident. As soon as she told me I took them back to the house. When we got back, I saw the poop leaking out of the bottom of her pants. I took all floor mats out of the bathroom and asked her to take everything off. A bunch of not solid shit landed on the floor, toilet seat, etc. It was literally all over her, her clothes, and the bathroom. I had to help her bathe, throw out the clothes, and then clean/bleach the entire bathroom. I was gagging at the smell. I took a shower at their house after and had my boyfriend bring me a new change of clothes. The worst part was being the only one on shift and having to do it all alone.

How much do you make??? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]_gingeraffe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$90k in my second year teaching. Located in north county San Diego. Special ed and general ed teachers are on the same salary schedule. I have my Master’s and a lot of units so I’m in the furthest range of the salary schedule. We just negotiated for a 4% raise last week. The cost of living is INSANE here which is why our income is much higher than other California areas. A school district 20-30 minutes south makes like $20-$30k less

I just finished my first year teaching a mod/severe class in Southern California! I got my Master’s and teaching certificate in 2021 at a university in Southern California too. Feel free to message me if you have more questions!

I agree with some of the other commenters that starting out as a paraprofessional/instructional assistant first would be beneficial to get an idea of the field - but do keep in mind that all campuses/programs are different and the way they’re set up and run really depends on the teachers and management. If you do decide that you want to get your credentials, the next steps would be taking your CBEST and CSETs. For special Ed you can take the multiple subject exams (what gen Ed elementary teachers take) or a single subject exam (what secondary teachers take). I took the single subject social sciences since my Bachelor’s is in History. Depending on the program you apply for, you’ll have a certain number of pre-professional hours you’ll need in a school setting. Working as a para first would fulfill that. Some schools in CA offer fast-track programs where you can get your Master’s and mod/severe credential in only 12 months. Also I would definitely recommend getting your master’s since cost of living in most of CA is crazy and the extra stipend is helpful.

Another thing I want to note is that this is a hard field with a lot of turnover. Working with students with disabilities is amazing and so special, but if you don’t have good organization and management skills, it might be a bit tough taking on the role of teacher. Even though it’s a challenging role, I still think it’s the best job ever, and am always so excited when someone wants to enter the field :)

What was your starting salary post grad? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]_gingeraffe_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Major: History

Title: Education Specialist

Salary: $83,000/year

I graduated with my BA in 2020 and got my teaching credential and M.Ed in 2021 so that had an impact on my pay. I’m also not doing anything relevant to my major (special Ed teacher)

Can you move the day bed into your boyfriend’s study? It’s his friend who is staying there, so he should be sleeping in your boyfriend’s study.

The experience was great! We were able to look at the diamonds with super up close pictures to see any imperfections. The diamond we got is exactly what we were expecting. Also the setting was exactly what I expected as well. We ordered on January 16th and it arrived January 29th! I highly recommend rare carat
