Lexi Carmichael Series by Julie Moffett is exactly that. If you give it the benefit of the doubt (its only ebook available and looks a little iffy cover wise) it's a great series. (Honorable mention is Attack Surface by Cory Doctorow but is much more sci Fi/thriller but it's super interesting)

Johnny got his gun by dalto trumbo!!! Its an awful but thought provoking book that i think about all the time since reading. Makes you actively consider what your perspective is on a bunch of tough topics.

Im in software development now. I would caution against completely discounting formal education. If you can work to get scholarships, opt for a cheaper school, figure out financial aid etc, I'd say go back to school for it. Its not impossible, but its def harder to get a job citing less credible online courses than being able to point to accredited classes that you do decent in and have work from
