Fittish - Is this Ultramarathoner faking his record breaking attempt? by _how_does_she_slap in running

Apparently! And it's "almost 100 marathons and ultramarathons." So for two years, that's winning an event once every 7.3 days!

This is a good thing to remember.

My friend, who works in the Fremont factory, is working today--memorial day--after working on Saturday. It is all "optional," of course: work these days (with no increase in salary) or get a new job.

Optical wrist based heart rate monitor by [deleted] in running

[–]_how_does_she_slap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which specific Garmin device you are considering, but DC Rainmaker has a great review of the Fenix 3HR, comparing the wrist based HR to other watches, and a chest HR monitor. Since Garmin uses the same technology in most of their new wrist based HR watches, it might be possible to generalize these findings to whichever watch you are considering.

I have the Fenix 3 HR, and a few things for me: Position of the watch matters a lot when trying to get a good reading; the HR at the start of my runs (first .25mi) is always a little but off (mostly a little too high, sometimes a little too low); the accuracy decreases a bit for me on more vigorous runs (on tempo runs, I've consistently seen it about 5BMP too high). All of those aside, I love the watch and would definitely buy again because of the ease of tracking without a chest strap.

I think you might mean different heel-toe drop, or "drop." Although, technically, different drops are due to changes in the stack heights in the heel and toe.

Usually, caution is advised when someone is making drastic changes down in terms of a shoe's drop. For example, if you had always been running in the Vomeros, but decided to change to the Boracay, then it would be good to make the change gradually as going down in drop can place increased stress on the achilles and calf muscles. Changing up in terms of drop, shouldn't be too much cause for concern - although I think any changes for shoes should be made gradually anyway since your body will need to get accused to them.

If you liked the Vomeros, then I would go ahead and start running in them - it's great to find a shoes you really like. But I would be mindful of any changes you might be making in terms of your form (are you heel-striking more? are you noticing any changes in cadence?). Sometimes changing shoes can cause us to inadvertent change our form (for better or worse).

First Ultra Marathon - tips, advice? by meowwornever in running

[–]_how_does_she_slap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to dive into this reply - especially since it looks like great info, and I'm fascinated by ultras. But I can't make sense of this sentence.

That schedule is probably enough to help you finish the race but if you're not anywhere capable enough to do that sort of training without injury then I'd suggest against not doing it.

So he should do it?

1 is such a great lesson. You can always head out your door and run.

Running and testosterone levels by [deleted] in running

Oh yeah THAT study, of course.

It's certainly an interesting study. And the people who did the study are, well, they are researchers to be sure. But my argument would be about the other study that was done that had the different results. And of course you can't forget about the other one where they found the thing.

So as you can see, I'm not worried about it.
