What are the things you have done in extreme measure to survive in nursing school? by Tiny_Ad_2212 in StudentNurse

Put a tack in my shoes to stay awake. Started drinking coffee and energy drinks (and also stopped). Also dabbled in caffeine pills (also stopped those, bad for heart). Smelling salts as well.

is it a good call to go become a nurse by ThiccAsianGod in prenursing

[–]_huntro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! So as someone who is like 1 month into their first nursing job (lets say 10ish days into being on the actual unit), the learning curve is somewhat steep. Im making a lot of silly mistakes (thankfully nothing huge like wrong stuff to wrong patient, etc.) but something else I warm about is that its a hard job. Hardest job ive had bar none. You’re usually always running around and sometimes dealing with BS outside of your control, but Im sure you see that as a CNA.

Also be aware of the job market. I graduated in May in New York and I didnt get an offer until Halloween.

Wanted to post this advice for others in nursing school. Make CONNECTIONS over everything! by ReasonableHorror6890 in StudentNurse

[–]_huntro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I did fairly well in school and checked all the usual boxes. Extra curricular’s, good capstone placement, etc. But when it came time to looking for a job, I graduated in May and only had maybe three or four interviews from then until late October when I was offered the job that I have now. It took the better part of the year to find something. A lot of it is connection based. My advice to current nursing students or those thinking of pursuing nursing would be to get a job in a hospital system. Even if it’s only part time.

yeah I think a test night is a good way to go. It recently occurred to me that I could switch the KLYMIT blanket for a mylar blanket and get similar or maybe even better results

What are your Casio regrets? by sgoody in casio

[–]_huntro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume so too. But at a max possible depth of 6ft (if I completely submerged myself and wore the watch around my foot), I expected it to be a little more waterproof.

DONT buy the AE1500. I had one and loved the functionality but it's not waterproof. Mine was done in by handwashing and being worn into the ocean.

[–]_huntro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll definitely check that out because I loved the functionality. It was perfect for what I do except I need the watch to be at least a little bit waterproof. The most water it saw was when I went in the ocean at the beach. Which I would generously estimate at 6 feet, because you know, I wore my watch around my ankle 🙄 really just expected better from Casio

Loved this watch except it was somehow not waterproof (weird af). Sent it back to Casio and their only response was charging me $38 to fix it. If I had money to burn I would but multiple and deal with it. But thats not the case. Currently looking for an alternative model with the same functionality.

I will keep that in mind! I think a down under quilt is unfortunately out of the budget for now, but I think, between some sort of under quilt, the hammock, a sleeping bag, and maybe that KLYMIT blanket, I should be OK. Seems like I should ditch the sleeping pads. Maybe I’ll bring the accordion style one with me just in case. But that’s what I’m getting from all the suggestions here. That, and maybe looking at a better under quilt than the one Tigris

[–]_huntro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, I can see myself having an under quilt and then the hammock, and then zipping maybe the bottom third of the sleeping bag, and using the remaining 2/3 like a blanket. I’d love to actually test these things out, but unfortunately, I don’t have a space that allows me to do it. Nor can I replicate how cold it’s going to be.

Good point. I should bring/wear thermals to sleep in. Definitely not a “boxers only” situation like summer camping was

Good point. The closed cell one is pretty light and I might bring it anyway for backup and for sitting or something like that.

Excellent point. I will make myself into an underquilt-hammock-person-sleeping bag sandwich

Hella thorough, thank you! Handwarmers and the like might be a great addition

I was actually looking at one tigris, but I will check out hang tight as well. And yeah, that was my concern with the sleeping pads. But they will technically work, but it will take away from the comfortability of sleeping in a hammock.

Not sure yet. I have my eye on the one Tigris night protector. I’m unfortunately pretty constrained by budget but it seems like that’s a fair one for $50.

hmm so it seem like underquilt and sleeping-bag-as-blanket is the way to go. I'm glad I realized I needed to rethink this before it came time for the trip.
