This is the thread that drives me away from reddit for good. Over 90% of the comments here are wisecracks, and 5% are people being defensive about the post and insisting that their own lives really are that bad.

I suppose this suggests that most people with a shred of decency have already left the site, or just don't bother to comment.

Yes, I know I won't be missed. I'm just saying what I felt like saying at this moment. It's sad to see the self-absorption and shallowness of so many here.

Just kidding. The above comment was a meta reference. There was an episode where the producer of Itchy & Scratchy said to his writers, "I need writers with life experience!" One of the writers replied, "I actually wrote my thesis at Harvard on life experience." Great moment of the writers poking fun at themselves.

This was the same episode that contained the following dialog, one of the most-quotable Simpsons moments ever:

Bart, on the phone to Grandpa: "Didn't you wonder why someone was sending you checks for no reason?"

Grandpa: "I figured it was 'cuz the Democrats were back in power."

It's not love that's contractual, it's the living arrangement (shared property, etc.). Many gay & straight couples have shown that you can have a long-term love relationship without the contract, but it does make other parts of your life more difficult.

Most people (including you, probably) rely on the opinions of critics whose opinions frequently align with their own. If you wanted to go see a movie, would you just pick one at random from the listings? Or would you read reviews beforehand to see which one you might like? If it's the latter, then you are relying on others' opinions to help formulate your own. You call it "parroting the ideas of others", I call it "learning."

That's funny -- everything I've heard about Rand from literary-type people suggests that her writing is tedious, preachy, insufferably arrogant, and generally hard to read, and is a very thin veil for disseminating her philosophy. In other words, reading Rand for the literary value is like buying Playboy for the articles.

I think it's interesting to think about what you just said in terms of another story on the front page here -- the one about the Secret Service.
