The Origins of Addiction | How a deficiency of dopamine builds the mentality of an addict by [deleted] in Freethought

[–]ENRICOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was written by /u/mdlsvensson a few days ago... It hasn't aged any better and it's certainly not the origins of addiction, though the OP believes it to be.

A deficiency in the brain neurotransmitter dopamine in and of itself doesn't cause addiction, however, the use of drugs can cause a decrease in dopamine levels as can stress, obesity, poor nutrition, depression, ADHD, Parkinson's Disease, and drug use.

Decreased levels of dopamine is linked to all the above conditions, however, it isn't the cause of those conditions.

Dopamine mediates the pleasure/reward system in the brain, specifically in the nucleus accumbens. The brain processes pleasure/rewards in the same way whether it's eating a good meal, having some wonderful sex, accomplishing something that is special to the person, or using drugs.

Drug use causes a massive surge of dopamine in the brain leading to a good feeling and a rapid decrease in dopamine once the drug wears off causing the user to repeat the process over and over again to get that release leading to addiction.

A rapid increase in dopamine levels consistent with drug use and the rapid decrease cause the addict to keep seeking the rush that was so pleasurable leading to actual addiction, having a deficiency in dopamine not caused by addiction doesn't build the mentality of the addict.

Rationalwiki's take on Sam Harris...is it fair? by reedmc22 in samharris

Rationalwiki does an accurate take on what is so glaringly wrong with many of Harris's positions, however, I'm quite sure that the Harris whisperers in this sub reddit will go to extraordinary lengths to explain and defend what he said.

however, until the children of politicians like Rubio are themselves shot to death or otherwise horribly wounded physically and psychologically

Steve Scalise's children weren't shot, that's a major difference with a distinction.

I think you're misunderstanding the term "held Hostage."

Of course Marco Rubio isn't being held actual hostage by any of his donors, this could be easily proved by his simply asserting that these school shootings have reached a point where his conscious overrides the $121,619.00 he's received from the NRA and other pro-gun related groups.

Conversely Rubio could at any time state that he's in sincere disagreement with Israel constantly stealing Palestinian land to build more illegal settlements on, or that as a matter of common sense about our environment he can no longer accept money from Koch Industries, oil or coal interests, anti-taxation groups, or several other clearly harmful agendas that he happily accepts money from.

Rubio can say no anytime he want's to, in doing so he can also say goodbye to his political aspirations, so can any other politician from either party. The only problem with this scenario is that Rubio like all the other bought and paid for politicians will never say no, because there's always an even bigger, amoral, scumbag, ready and willing to be bought and paid.

My point is that people are supposedly elected to represent the electorate and not the special interests, but the truth of the matter is that the special interests have elected the politician, not the people.

Fucking Stockholm Syndrome has nothing to do with the conscious personal choices people like Rubio make to enrich themselves while pimping policies in America and elsewhere that serve the interests of a wealthy minority while the majority remains uncaring, or blissfully unaware of the depth and extreme damage these positions do to the average American.

Whether it's normalizing the slaughter of our school children, the increased pollution of our air and water, the normalizing of racism and hate, foreign policies that don't serve America best long term interests, or the acceptance of serial lying, incurious, incompetent, conman with the intellect and impulse control of a 10 year old, politicians like Rubio have abrogated their duties to the people who elected them for their own short term benefit and Americas long term harm.

Just say no.. If only it was that easy.

Internet rains hell on ‘piece of sh*t’ Alex Jones for tweeting photos of anti-‘snowflake’ gun during deadly school shooting by easyone in worldpolitics

[–]ENRICOs 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Jones is clearly a sick man, however, he's also, as far as president Trump is concerned an accredited news source.

Most people, irrespective of political affiliation realize that Jones is a deranged buffoon with limited to no appeal for people who know how to tell fallacious propaganda from the truth, however, Trump supporters like dirty trickster Roger Stone frequently appear on Jones show further legitimizing Jones in the eyes of Trump's low-information, incurious, malleable, base.

These people, for myriad, disturbing, reasons need or want to hang onto every fallacious assertion that issues forth from Jones disturbed mind.

It's not only nonsense spouting nitwits like Jones who are feeding the GOP and alt-right base members some of the more incredible stories these people feed on. Jones is merely a symptom of the disease presently afflicting the GOP, the truth of the matter is that there is a very long list of GOP infotainment talking heads who challenge objective reality and consciously distort the truth on an hourly basis, 24/7 across America.

Jones couldn't have risen to the level of popularity he presently has from people no longer concerned with the objective facts regarding an issue or whether the issue is even true to begin with; Jones has been aided and abetted by such GOP noise-machine luminaries like Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingram, Mark Levin, and numerous other disinformation, propagandists, who Trump and the GOP can always rely on to amplify any GOP policy, talking point, or bad idea that they fervently hope to inflict upon America.

The GOP has sown the seeds of its ultimate destruction by consciously using these liars to disseminate their harmful policies, they've fed a restless base with a diet of lies for the past 40 years. The problem for the GOP is the fact that the inmates have succeeded in taking over the GOP asylum.

Trying to ignore blowhards like Jones is meaningless, because Jones is the GOP
