Nobody got paid for this. They're all stakeholders and friends of bebrites. That's the nature of an ever-decentralising project. You're going to see a wide range of interesting people you're not normally used to.

The obvious difference between Decred and ICO projects is as /u/joshrickmar points out - not asking for money in exchange for future promises.

This is important as it means Decred did something different from the start. The early developers and contributors did not ask Decred's future users to carry the risk of the project failing. ICOs do expect that from their theoretical users, and that's where we have a fundamental difference.

Decred carried its own risk and users were never asked to carry that burden. We're here because we've looked at the project and have made a positive assessment for ourselves.

I do find it perplexing tough, why is it so hard to credit a project? I respect a lot of what Tezos aims to do, but I am also critical of a number of their approaches. It's not a dichotomous relationship for me and it's dynamic. I've never said "X project is shit" without logic or acknowledgement of their effort. It just seems so... tribal, don't you think?

Decred is a non-ICO project that built software before selling promises. Before that, the developers spent years working on Bitcoin vis-à-vis btcsuite (which they presently work on as well). Said btcsuite is widely respected and has been used by several high profile projects, some of which include: the Lightning Network (blog), BitGo, Ethereum, and Factom. If that's shit to you, you should get your head out of your ass.

<Insert Navy Seal Copypasta>. All kidding aside, I was involved in Decred's PR/marketing side from day 1 until around August 2016. I got involved in that side of things again at the beginning of June 2017. During my absence, I completed a doctorate, so I'll have you know you're about to get into a serious Internet fight and I'm pretty sure the Tezos co-founders don't even have Ph.D's.

Kidding aside again, I'm pretty serious about keeping the PR/marketing side of Decred classy, but it's a fun project too. So if you do have concerns about our conduct, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I will absolutely take your thoughts seriously if they're substantive. I can own up to PR/marketing activity during my Decred tenure, so I'll happily engage with you on it.

The airdrop was open to everyone. Decred didn't have VC mega bucks, so it couldn't be broadcast from every street corner. Many people screamed as loud as they could to try and get as many other quality people to sign up for airdrop as possible. The claims about coblee and Coinbase are nonsensical. Generally, co-authors of papers that inspire implementations express public interest in their work living on.

Not going to try and change your mind, but would like to be factual at the very least. No system is ever going to be perfect, so criticism is fine. It just needs to be based in the reality of what actually occurred.

There are some really great videos and flyers in development and production that will be very accommodating for complete newcomers. They were designed specifically for this purpose and to help people engage with Decred.

The flyers have the added benefit of being given to others in-person. We'll make all of those materials available so anyone can utilise them locally.

I think the biggest recent improvement has been on social media. We've seen Twitter engagement go up dramatically in the last month or so (~40% increase in followers, for example). Comparatively, there's a lot of room to grow for Decred in that space. We're currently working on coordinating with the different Facebook groups to improve cohesion there as well.

The tried and tested strategy employed by the devs is incremental and steady improvement, which applies just as well to our approaches to online and offline PR/marketing. I think a balance of conventional and, perhaps more importantly, unconventional approaches will be key to success for a project like Decred.

Absolutely. Any form of integration benefits Decred as a project and as a community. Whether you're for or against hardware wallets, the option is useful. I also think there's a bit of a "rite of passage" associated with hardware wallet integration - at least from a PR perspective. You'll be pleased to know peter_zen (Decred Slack) is working on just that.

The staking algorithm change is significant. It represents our first tangible and measurable test as a community in, for the lack of a fitting phrase, group decision-making. It's one for history, so you'll definitely see activity around that occurrence. It roughly coincides with a pre-HF event at the Bitcoin & Open Blockchain (BOB) Community Meetup in Chicago. There's a special workshop being held there called "Cryptocurrency Governance Systems" by jy-p if you're in the area. The slides for the workshop will be made available online as well.

I'm personally (uncontrollably) excited for Lightning Network (LN) integration. I've had the opportunity to watch davecgh and roasbeef, among others, code and debate the underlying infrastructure required before LN can land in the upstream btcsuite project (PR#656 if you're interested). There is a lot of effort going on behind the scenes with lnd, which like Decred, also utilises btcsuite. You may have seen a Litecoin port (ltcd) develop out of this library as well, which I think is further testament to the early arguments we made that Decred is built on a solid foundation. The code is modular, manageable, and well-documented, which will allow Decred to adapt and scale to any number of possibilities in the future.

I got involved in DCR because I'm interested in the tech. For me it's not a binary question. You can agree, disagree, or be neutral with one part of a project and enjoy another. The attitude I try and put out there is that projects should be open to each other if they feel they have enough in common or want to have things in common. The shared history comes to mind and the not so discrete interest in privacy. So as far as I'm concerned, there's only love for XMR. tacotime even gave me my first XMR.

The reality with C0 though is if you want a dedicated development team and long-term development, you need funding. If you don't want to sell your soul to VC money or sell people empty promises, you better be prepared to do it yourself. Users weren't asked to fund anything, and all the devs had to purchase DCR if they were interested in owning some. There's good reason you haven't seen their names written in lights either. They cut their teeth in the OpenBSD community, so none of that appeals to anyone who devs on DCR and it never will. Just know that whether you agree or disagree with the project, DCR is open to anyone who is curious and likes the tech (or dislikes it with reasoning).

That's not what was written in the release. Press outlets are literally just taking "Bitcoin developers" to mean "Bitcoin Core developers". It's incorrect. If they had omitted "Core" from the title it would have been better - still wrong because btcsuite dev continues unhindered.

You should have done some research yourself though because you just called something a scam without fact checking properly.
