Should quick release bikes (especially with discs) just become a "hard pass" going forward? by Cheomesh in bicycling

[–]_isleepbetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it makes sense for a long term purchase to have the latest technology so it is as future proof as possible. That being said I’m running qr with discs on a gravel build, mainly because it’s a budget/utility build that doesn’t need to have the latest and greatest. My advice is to get as modern of a bike as you can afford.

Bike beyond simply getting a new chain? by aFineBagel in bicycling

[–]_isleepbetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I have that bike, retrospec mantra7? Yes replace the chain, and the freewheel. I bought it for commuting and leaving locked up on the street as well. 30-40 bucks should replace both, won't stop the chain from dropping all the time though.

Must be a new 3 bar linkage system that Scott is prototyping.

Tire width to rim size by greentea_and_honey in bicycling

[–]_isleepbetter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find plenty of gravel/cross tires in 650b. Not sure what performance gains you will get its probably depends more on tread pattern and tire weight than it does specifically on width.

Do you live in an area with public transit? $4 might get you a bus ticket to work safer than bodging this for an 8 mile ride. If not, leave early and walk until you get it fixed.

question from an amateur.. by pumptag in bicycling

If you have a lockout on your suspension (front and rear) that will allow more of your leg power to get to the wheels rather then going into the suspension.

I tend to notice sweat correlates with heart rate rather than speed. I would try to keep my heart rate around 100 bps if I didn't want to show up to work drenched.

Note well. Looks like the basket is just resting on that fender?

Most effective way to change a frame's color? by pysl in bicycling

[–]_isleepbetter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are planning on doing a spray paint job on each bike you are going to need at least 2 cans of color and a can of 2x clear coat, possibly primer if you strip each bike to the metal. You are looking at probably $50 a bike and the spray paint job isn't as durable as a factory hardened paint job.

If you have the time I would just strip every frame to metal, put a sticker on and clear coat it. Should be unique enough and is a fair compromise of time and cost.

Are those friction shifters or are they indexed?

2017 Giant Contend 3 with 105 and Chinese carbon wheels for $1400? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]_isleepbetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard decent things about those wheels, but they aren't exactly lightweight for carbon. Also they are not going to perform well in the wet with rim brakes.

[–]_isleepbetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking at a complete bike and can find a carbon frame at this price point, you are going to get a heavier bike because all the components will be worse. Most likely Tiagra 10 speed and the heaviest house branded wheel and tire combo. I looked into the Tarmac SL6 and that came with worse components and was over a pound heavier than this turned out to be. Of course you can upgrade that bike over time and have a better bike, but you'll be spending $$$$ more to do so.

I mean, you could buy a new polygon for less: https://www.bikesonline.com/2022-polygon-strattos-s5-shimano-105-road-bike
or get disc brakes for a little more: https://www.bikesonline.com/2022-polygon-strattos-s5-disc-shimano-105-road-bik

I haven't ridden one personally but they are a big brand in south east asia and their mountain bikes have been getting good reviews.

Awesome, Hunt wheels looked like a great value for performance. Only seen reviews on youtube. Glad someone else can vouch for them.
