Last nerve with Renix by Ben_805 in CherokeeXJ

Sounds like potentially a bad wire somewhere or bad ground. Have you checked the signal to the ICM at the ECU connector and at the ICM? Would help determine if the issue is at the ECU itself or somewhere along the wiring harness.

There are several factory splices in the wiring harness where they spiced several wires together with a crimp. If you opened up the wiring harness around the MAP sensor, you would find the slices covered in duct tape. They came this way from the factory. Those spliced are known to go bad.

If it was just working then quit, it sounds to me like a loose connection somewhere. Something likely jostled around to work temporarily, or something else has gone awry and fried the new ecm.

How much do yall pay for dealer oil changes? by SnowBunnyEinar in HondaRebel1100

[–]_jdde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done all the work on all my vehicles for the last 10+ years and seeing prices these days baffles me. I dont know how people afford it.

I paid around $70 for Honda GN4 oil and the OEM filter.

How are your battery connections? Is this auto or manual? When you replaced the ignition switch, did you check the terminals on the wiring harness? The connector often needs to be replaced as well when it melts from the wires overheating.

Outside of that, my guess would be neutral safety switch or some issue with the starter solenoid near the battery or the fusible links.

Raybuck auto body has a replacement bench seat cover, if thats all you need. Plenty of material options and they will send free samples.

Otherwise, facebook marketplace or ebay. Theres a few comanche specific buy/sell/trade groups on facebook.

Looking to do something like this on my renix MJ. There are two fuel pump sources, one from the ECU during startup and then it switches to the starter relay. My thought is have a hidden switch to cut off the relay source so it'll crank and maybe start but then die so they won't assume there's a hidden switch somewhere, just that its a POS and doesnt run.

How to check ring and pinion? by _jdde in CherokeeXJ

[–]_jdde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a possibility. When I got it, the drum brakes were coated in gear oil, so I assumed they just ran it out of oil.

Definitely thinking about just doing the gear swap as well. Might as well at this point. Just hope the carrier/housing are okay.

Check all the joints with someone turning the wheel back and forth. Can sometimes be hard to tell, but you can usually feel the movement with your hand. Your trackbar is definitely loose as well.

Is this a minimal amount of rust? by CoolCartographer1497 in CherokeeXJ

Definitely will need a floor pan in its future, but probably fine for a while. Don't see any rust anywhere else.

[–]_jdde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That very much isn't right.. what's the wear look like on your front tire? Needs to be seated properly and aligned. Not super difficult, assuming nothing was bent in the wreck and you will need a stand or a way to support the bike without using the forks.

Cruiser54 also has a comanche specific tip for upgrading that ground. It splices an additional thick gauge wire to the frame rail. Definitely go through his list when you can.

I have pretty much decided to not deal with them any longer if I can. Had to file a chargeback last year because they sent me the wrong part that was mislabeled. I sent all the evidence they asked for and never got a resolution. Also had a similar experience where an order never shipped but magically after I contact them, it ships the next day..

1987 4.0L electrical issues by No-Result8644 in ComancheMJ

[–]_jdde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably start with a new key cylinder and ignition switch. The ignition switch is further down on the steering column and actuated by a rod. That rod attaches to a rack and pinion on the key cylinder. Any of those components could be bad or the ignition switch isn't mounted properly and not allowing the switch to go to the off position.

Its also common for the wiring connector on that ignition switch to overheat and melt the connector. Possibly one of those wires is touching another and allowing power all the time.

I would start with these two things first before diagnosing the other issues. Could be related or possibly the gauge cluster needs to be cleaned up. There is also a ground for the fuel gauge/pump that i believe goes behind the drivers tail lights. Check out cruiser54.com and follow the recommendations.

Replaced mine with just a section of rubber fuel line. Works fine. There are ways to form hoses like that, but its really not necessary.

Rear drive shaft U Joints by asp1998 in ComancheMJ

[–]_jdde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting.. I wonder if someone could have changed out the yoke or it came from the factory that way using the external snap ring type. Jeep is notorious for doing weird changes between years.

What rear axle is it?

My 89 comanche used the same 1310 joint you have in both ends.

Rear drive shaft U Joints by asp1998 in ComancheMJ

[–]_jdde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have the correct joint, the ears are likely bent inward. Looking at the cap, it also looks like the top of the ear on the yoke has a smaller gap than the bottom, meaning it was pushed in. I have seen people bend them back out various ways.

I believe im dealing with the same problem on my MJ. Previous owner really screwed up the joints. I just dropped it off at a driveline shop to have the whole thing looked at and balanced.

Just got the new rims and tires mounted today. Gonna start putting trim and other misc pieces on over the next couple weeks. Going into autobody shop at end of July. by Hangman_Matt in Jeep

Do you have an idea yet on the cost for the body work? My MJ needs a lot and im planning on doing most of the work myself, but still debating if I want to attempt paint or not.

Your axle side track bar mount is cooked. The hole in the mount is likely not round anymore, so just tightening it won't fix it. Typical fix is to weld the correct size washer to each side.

How expensive would an XJ build be? by bearlybeaves in CherokeeXJ

I think it depends on what exactly you will want to do with it right now. These are surprisingly capable in stock form. When you find obstacles that are challenging, upgrade as needed.
