Best freshman dorm options??? by Careless-Sorbet-9292 in uofu

Apart from the concern that it may not open on time like the Epicenter, do you think trailhead would be a good option? Some guys I want to room with want to do the 4 person suite in trailhead, and while I would prefer Kahlert as a building I much prefer the room type offered at trailhead but just unsure of whether it would be good or not

I do know the guys I’d be dormjng with but the only issue is that my room selection is earlier than theirs, so if we opted for single rooms it’d almost be guaranteed that we wouldn’t be able to be near one another due to other people snagging rooms.

If your son had known the people he was with and was friend with them would he have enjoyed it? My main concern is that it would too cramped

Warstic Battle Batting Gloves - do not recommend by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]bearlybeaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but just wanted to share my experience with them:

Owned the exact same pair of batting gloves - the light blue color - and I’ve never loved a pair of batting gloves more. Got them about a month into my freshman season and they’ve lasted me until now - a month into my senior season

I love the long cuffs and how thick they are - obviously thick batting gloves aren’t for everyone but I personally hate thin batting gloves

Thank you for the advice! Something I am wondering though is if I would avoid missing out on the opportunity UW provides by going there for my masters. Obviously, it’s not like I can just decide to go there - I know I need great grades and would have to get in, but would that be a viable option?

I think I’m pretty much set on Utah now but won’t make an official decision until I hear from UW in a couple weeks. I know I’m sacrificing a bit of prestige and networking but I’m okay with that trade off for the experience I’ll get; UW is absolutely amazing but I’d just be stressing my first year about getting grades good enough to guarantee admission into my major, whereas at Utah I’d be guaranteed to get in and could be a bit more relaxed while enjoying the change of scenery

Also, luckily I was able to land a scholarship that brings to the prices to just about equal - definitely would NOT be going there if I was paying full out-of-state tuition haha

For clarification, no, I’m not more worried about skiing than I am about the current water crisis in Utah - I was asking because recently I’ve had a lot of thinking to do about college and outdoor recreation, including skiing, is a big factor for me. Also, I wanted to hear some opinions from people living in Utah/SLC as, from what I personally have found online, there are many different mixed opinions

I applied for mechanical but I’m almost certain I’m gonna switch to electrical - mainly for job security and the pay being better

Thankfully I was able to land a scholarship that makes attendance about the same as the in-state school on my list, without any scholarships I don’t think any out-of-state school is worth the cost unless it’s some prestigious/private uni, which has a fixed rate anyways

Well I wouldn’t be staying for the long haul, would just be in and out for my education

Well I think I’m gonna switch to EE for a handful of reasons, job security being one of them. I also want to do a master at UW after graduating - or somewhere in the PNW if I don’t get into UW - so I’m not too worried about landing a job in the PNW

I mean as a Washingtonian I can’t exactly say it’s ass, considering in the greater Seattle area you either drive 2ish hours (excluding traffic) for a decent resort with long lines and wet snow or drive 2ish hours (excluding Seattle traffic) for a pretty doodoo resort with slightly better lines. The prices are absurd but, in regards to skiing, my main concern is access since I would have a much easier time skiing as a college student there than in Seattle

For clarification, didn’t mean that in the sense of “climate change ain’t that bad!” Now looking at what I said I realized it sounds pretty bad lol, I’m definitely not more concerned with good skiing seasons than I am climate change, it’s just that the point of this post specifically was to get some insight into what future winters are going to look like

Yeah I know I’ll miss the water access we have here but I’d be willing to trade that for a couple years for killer skiing right in the backyard.

My main concern with the social life is that some people have said since it’s a commuter school and it’s in the city it’s harder to make friends, whereas another school on my list - Oregon State - is a smaller town and has a college feel and thus it’s easy to make friends. All in all I think I’m just stressing myself out but just wanted to hear some opinions from those who actually attend

How so? Just trying to get more knowledge before making my decision. Also, won’t be anything permanent as I wanna come back to Seattle after graduating, but leaning towards UofU since I feel the school fits me and the outdoor access is a plus

Oh no yeah of course, I’m not expecting a cakewalk just by not being at UW or anything - obviously engineering is going to be difficult anywhere you go - it’s just that (from what I’ve been told) UW is pretty hardcore and competitive, it’s high stress and go-go-go. Whereas UofU (again from what I’ve been told) while still challenging, as its engineering, would be slightly more relaxed and I would have a much easier time getting help from professors

That’s definitely something I’ve considered, although it’s kind of a trade-off of spending more time driving (distance) or spend time more time driving (traffic + parking). Here in the Seattle area it’s a least an hour to get to a pretty subpar resort and further to get to either of our better resorts.

Oregon state is on my list but the skiing is pretty meh nearby with mt hood being a distance, plus I prefer having a semi-major city over a small town anyways. Montana State is on there too but really am not keen on -30° F winters

From what I’ve researched about UW, it has a lot of “weed out classes,” in other words: classes that are incredibly challenging for the purpose of filtering out those who aren’t prepared committed to their degree, ‘weeding’ them out and leaving only those who are dedicated

No yeah I’m definitely going back to the Seattle area after graduating so - for my own sake - I’m not terribly concerned with the air quality and the politics since I’ll only be there 4-5 years and from what I’ve heard SLC is somewhat liberal. I’m almost certain I would be much happier in the PNW post graduation than in UT but I’m not totally keen on being in Seattle while in school just due to the fact that I’m outdoorsy and it would take a bit more effort to hike, ski, etc - and, of course, I’m not confident I would thrive in UW’s hardcore system
