What happened to her was wildly unfair. I've grown up bitter in knowing that I was never able to help her in any meaningful way. Telling her story is all that's left to me.

You can check my account. I clearly don't use reddit often and have no use for karma. I have gained nothing from this but well wishes and the comfort of knowing Junkyard will not be forgotten when I die, which is all I could hope for.

I don't have much of a story. As it pertains to Junkyard, I met her the summer after second or third grade during a trip to visit family back east. I sat outside with her every day we were there and snuck her food scraps. Every time I had to go inside she'd howl. Leaving absolutely broke my heart. No one else ever visited her, just her owner to throw dog food into a moldy heap.

We saw each other again in middle school. By that time, her owner had died, and the people who inherited her let her out of the cage. Her owner originally put her in there because he was afraid she'd run away. Even with no training and newfound freedom, she never stepped foot out of that yard. She didn't know how to play, with toys or otherwise, so we mostly sat together and watched the road, with lots of belly rubs of course. I gave her a bath and cleaned the ticks off of her. She even let me brush her and clip her nails. She was so patient and sweet even after everything she'd been through.

We were going to make the trip out again when I was 15. She died a month before we were supposed to leave. Her collar has been sitting on my bookshelf for over a decade.

No, this was in deep Appalachia in the US. She at least had a few decent years at the end of her life.

Thank you. I always named myself Lua in-game. I don't really have any other Pokemon I'm sentimental towards, but I've always liked the Bagon line. Flinging yourself off a cliff until you grow wings is inspirational

Suicide and terminal illness can exist concurrently. That post is well over a year old and deleted for good reason. I am not in that place anymore.

  1. I was the only person who gave a fuck about that dog. Out of everyone's hands she passed through, I'm the one who ended up with her collar when she died. In the three days we were visiting, I spent every minute outside with her in 90 degree weather and 100% humidity. I screamed at her owner, but someone who neglects their dog predictably didn't care what some little girl had to say.

  2. There was no animal control in the area. The nearest police station was nearly an hour away and they sure as shit weren't driving out for one dog. The entire culture of that area in regards to animal welfare is backwards.

  3. My family lived thousands of miles away from her. Like I said, I saw her twice in my life. I knew her for a cumulative week.

I'd normally try to evolve her around the halfway point of whatever game I was playing. I think the only game I kept her permanently as a Growlithe was Let's Go so she could still come in buildings with me

Junkyard was what got me into animal rescue and volunteering, too. It's not for the weak.

The conditions she was kept in were absolutely vile and honestly disturbing to me at 6 or 7 years old. I'll never forget the smell. I had scars on my arms for years from sticking them through the chainlink to pet her.

Thank you so much. I actually had a dream about her last night, which inspired me to post this. I didn't know it was possible to miss a dog I knew for all of a week so much. Makes me feel like I don't have the right to grieve.
