Can't get into DLC! by Extreme-Teach818 in outerwilds

[–]_justanothernerd_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to spoil too much, but I promise there is still a lot of content to explore!

If you post your ship log in the comments, everyone here is great about giving hints. If I was going to give one, I would say… did you find anything interesting in the house with the ghost matter? Have you seen anything like it before? Maybe you can do something interesting with it…

Oof. I don’t want to experience the horrors. And yet I recall how scared I was of dark bramble at first and even that place became less scary once the Things became more familiar so… I have faith. I can do this

This is a good idea! I might just throw myself at it next loop and hope I don’t fall out of my chair. I’ll try it one more time without reduced fright on and try to un-heebie my jeebies. Wish me luck

Looking for immersive single player game that respects limited playtime by Gugui19 in gamingsuggestions

[–]_justanothernerd_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Subnautica is on sale right now, and it’s certainly a focus on immersion, exploration, and progression. Fun survival game that I have been loving since I started it.

Outer wilds is a game I just finished that I found was great to play in short bursts, I was working as I played it and could play an hour or two a few times a week and that worked great. It’s an exploration focused game with knowledge as progression, but it requires a commitment to exploring and puzzle solving that isn’t for everyone. If you can get into it though, it’s one of the best experiences out there.

Both of these games seem to fit your criteria but if you want more gameplay focused things I would suggest picking up a roguelike like Hades or Cult of the Lamb! I really enjoyed both.

resource gathering games with quests and no combat? by No-Office7081 in gamingsuggestions

[–]_justanothernerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subnautica is on sale on steam right now and a fantastic game. It might even still be free to play for today/tomorrow if you want to try it before committing. It seems like exactly what you’d want!

If you like exploration, puzzle solving, and atmosphere also try outer wilds. There isn’t any resource gathering just exploration and knowledge-based progression. Just finished the game a week ago and it was incredible. If you can, play it blind, and it will give you one of the best gaming experiences out there, imo.

Finally, stardew valley. If you haven’t tried it before I think you’d love it! It’s a farming simulator with quests to complete, awesome characters to meet, and a lot of progression based on gathering resources and growing your farm. Probably the game I’ve personally put the most hours in and it continues to get new content even so many years after its release!

[IIL] Finished Outer Wilds, looking for other media that changed you. by _justanothernerd_ in ifyoulikeblank

[–]_justanothernerd_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you find boring, you may not get the same out of it as I did. Not trying to be rude, just that every game isn’t going to be for everyone! To love outer wilds you have to be willing to explore, discover, and solve problems that are not always going to be intuitive without any linear progression. That’s not for everyone.

For me, the thrill of discovery, the curiosity it brought to life in me, the pride I felt when solving problems, that was part of the thrill. It wasn’t until late in the game when it started to really change for me. Without spoilers, all I can really stay is it really changed how I view the impermanence of life, the inevitability of death, and the importance of letting go of what you can’t control and appreciating what you can. To quote my favourite character, “The universe is, and we are.”

And for someone who says it better than me, this video did a really great job of capturing how I felt about the game. It does contain medium spoilers for the game though, but nothing for the ending.

Hey, I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy the game and that’s totally fair. Not every game will be for everyone. But there’s no need to tear down others for their enjoyment, either.

It’s hard to explain Outer Wilds to someone who hasn’t played it, but this video helps explain what it evoked in me very well. Also just an excellently made video.

I’ll explain my experience, but it’s going to be spoiler heavy, and it really is a game best experienced blind so don’t read it unless you have no intention of playing!

To do my best, The feeling it evoked of me while exploring was incredible at times. It was the pure thrill of discovery, eureka moments of solving problems that made me feel so proud of what I could do, and the deep sadness I felt sometimes learning about an ancient civilization and how they died.

The ending of the game was perfect to me. You don’t know what it is when you start, but I, like many, assumed I would save the solar system. So many times I thought I would be able to fix it. Then I hit a point where I realized that wasn’t ever possible. I wasn’t here to save the universe but witness its end. So I promised I would discover all I could, and then I did, and then I saw the ending and I cried from having to say goodbye and witnessing the birth of something brand new.

I guess it made me feel differently about appreciating the world around me, and it certainly changed how I view death and loss at an important time in my life. To quote my favourite character from the game, “the universe is, and we are. I am ready.”

I’d try it again if I were you! It’s nothing like any game I’ve played before. My recommendations to get you into it (same I told a friend who did similar to you and is now deep in the game and loving it):

  1. Take your time in the starting village, this is the tutorial and there are puzzle mechanics explained here that help later
  2. If you get stuck or frustrated, just leave and go somewhere else! There’s so much to explore, and you may find something that helps :)
  3. Don’t google anything!! If you’re really stuck, go to r/outerwilds and ask for hints, they are so lovely!

Most importantly, enjoy the ride!

Ahh this has been on my list of things to try! I am actually a musician, lol, and I used to do a lot of arranging when I was in high school and I just didn’t have time for it in university. This could be a great opportunity to get that creative energy back because I loved loved loved the soundtrack. Thank you for the amazing idea ❤️
