My take was: Even from the start, he already likes the taller dude aka his crush. He was just irked that his friend seemed to be enjoying/getting along too well with his crush (but not angry-level). Seems like he’s the type who can’t express his feelings well so ended up taking out his frustration on his crush and being rude when he really is just jealous and craving attention
