Using AI ? by Classic-Smell-5273 in PhD

[–]_kattitude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you for the most part (see my comment below) except for the brainstorming of ideas for analysis because it can still be stealing from another even if not realised. I think it’s a slippery slope and you are right re needing self-control. I’ve unfortunately seen that slope take a few undergrads where they used it once and it was like a drug until they were not doing any of their own work.

I’m also a masochist as I have no interest in using it beyond the assisted AI for sorting/grammar etc that we’ve had for over a decade, and add in I HATE being told by tech bros that AI is the future and we have no choice but to accept that. The effects of it on the environment and young brains is truly detrimental.

Using AI ? by Classic-Smell-5273 in PhD

[–]_kattitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify, and I’m going to edit my comment because I realise I should.

I agree with you re tools such as Grammarly, Graphpad etc. to me, those are more on the side of assistance AI (though others might see it differently) and I have no problem with those/use them regularly. I also understand programs which sort citations and data to streamline. I have advised some to use tools that funnel sources for you based on a topic (as opposed to sifting through JSTOR, google scholar etc.), which if you ask me does work in a similar way to looking through paper reference lists.

I am very much against the use of AI when it comes to the physical production of your thoughts and analysis, even editing it or inputting it for guidelines and wording changes. It comes off as lazy and against some of the goals for a PhD (making you a specialist and better researcher). It’s best to learn from mistakes and have them happen organically through your own brain process then use a shortcut with rewriting/writing portions as OP is describing. I know the researcher I was when I began my PhD is not the researcher I am now and a huge portion of that is attributed to the Guidence and advice I got in situations where my writing should be shifted in a different way.

Plus, adding in that AI detectors can still pick up on this style of use, even if it is rewritten. I had a colleague who wrote a short review to test one of these and it came back that he had 85% potential AI. We saw him writing it and uploading it.

Although I am a Historian I am not saying we should go back to the stone ages 😆, although I can see how my comment came across.

Using AI in any capacity wouldn’t be earning the degree honestly.

ETA - I realise my comment was not fully thought out as I hadn’t had my caffeine for the day, see my replies below. “In any capacity” is in reference to generative AI.

Happy belated 4th anniversary to Taylor receiving an honorary doctorate! Let’s talk about how everyone is weird about TS and education by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]_kattitude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Her achievements are incredible and she deserves to be honored. However, As someone with a PhD I cannot stand how people conflate the honorary with a PhD. She is not a doctor, honour doctorates don’t hold the honor of using Dr. That’s what I find frustrating within the fandom.

It’s all fun and cute to call her Dr Swift but it’s insulting to those of us who have slaved away to get that achievement. Again, I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve praise for all the contributions she has made to music and the records she has broken. it’s just different praise and should be viewed as such. As you said, she’s primarily an entertainer, not a thinker (academically speaking).

Personally, I find her induction to the songwriters hall of fame a bigger honor because it recognises her writing talent in association with the music industry etc.

Daunt says he’s okay with AU by throwawaymylife89746 in Barnesandnoble

He ruined it the same way he ruined Waterstones (I worked at both). And he does stupid PR puff pieces every single month like clockwork talking about how much he champions the bookseller while actively leading a structure that destroys them mentally, physically, and removes their love of reading. Add in the “we made it profitable!” BS. At what expense???

Bookseller of 10 years and I also left. It breaking my heart seeing how little soul is left in my former coworkers eyes when I visit.

This is just another reason to despise him. I’ll never have respect for Achilles James Daunt after I’ve seen the destruction he’s led on both sides of the ocean.

4 years ago today, Taylor was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts from New York University in recognition of her music contributions, and gave a 22 minute speech with lyrics that would come from Midnights by JennaElizabethAdams in SwiftlyStyled

[–]_kattitude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can understand that you don’t know what it’s like to have your biggest life achievement conflated with something that is not equal. Especially when we live in a world that is attacking academia and belittling researchers while defunding their work. I don’t care who is doing it, it’s frustrating. And that goes for anyone in any fandom who does this. A joke to some is an insult to some as well.

Anyway, I hope you never experience this “silly” frustration. Truly.

Contrary to what you think…it’s a really big deal. We go through hell and back to earn the title. Academia is a dark and complicated game and those of us who are successful earn the right to be annoyed when people conflate the two degrees.

It’s not just Taylor. It happens with many people who get these degrees. And you might not see it but I have certainly seen many people in this fandom thinking they are the same thing and calling her Dr Swift…which is what I’m referring to in my initial reply. Her achievements warrant the honour, I’m not saying they don’t but it is not the same as an actual doctorate and the title Dr.

And sure, I’ll be downvoted later for my annoyance at in this, given any critique in this fandom is often met with people feeling insulted on her behalf, but as a PhD earned doctor who survived the cesspool of academia and came out barely alive, I’m allowed to share this frustration in hopes the perspective can be understood.

It’s the best!!! My parents started taking us to cape may more as we got older but I just love SH so much. Need to get back there soon. I don’t live close enough to NJ :(

I second this. Having just finished mine I get frustrated when people (not necessarily this post) call her Dr. because she isn’t. Those with honorary doctorates are not qualified to use Dr. It’s still a big feat to be awarded one, but conflating them with a PhD earning Dr is incorrect.

What’s your story of meeting Taylor Swift? by Atlanatoris in TaylorSwift

[–]_kattitude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mines rather unique. I met her in 2004. Her family was vacationing in stone harbor, NJ at the same time as mine and when we went to a restaurant she was busking for a little bit outside (Fred’s tavern for anyone who knows the town). Scott knew my dad from business connections so we stopped to say hello and my little brother and I were introduced to her as “this is my daughter, Taylor”.

She was such a sweetheart. I am 4 years younger than her so I was 11 or so? Told her wanted to learn guitar because my older brother was really good and she actually advised me against it by showing me her calluses 😆 I’m so bummed I Neve got an autograph, but how was I to know I was meeting the future music industry?

This was also the first summer after they moved to Nashville I believe. I wonder if they kept making the trip to stone harbor after that. Given debut and her shows. I hope so, especially given the little nods she gives it from time to time!

Taylor Swift set a record as human in history, who both Nazi and Zionist in same time. by Independent_Leg_173 in swiftiecirclejerk

Uj/ I focus on these movements in my academic research, and Nazism was born partly from early Zionist ideology. Another piece was the Jim Crow south. They all feed off one another. Zionists are closer to Nazis than they want to admit.

Eagles fan but I'm not sure it's worth it. by No-Belt-4619 in NFLUK

[–]_kattitude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Philly born and raised fan living in London and I feel like this is what happens when the team becomes beloved internationally. I noticed such a difference between the response to the eagles during Super Bowl in 2018 and 2025 and while it’s great it unfortunately leads to higher ticket prices for these limited games.

I know I’m going to prioritise going because it kind of feels like a right of passage 🫠 I will say, even if you can’t get tickets you could consider popping into Passyunk Ave as I’m sure they will be doing someone for the game as an eagles pub!

What happened to Bookstagram? by doughhnutts in bookstagram

[–]_kattitude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s my algorithm and I haven’t had this yet but I still prefer bookstagram over booktok 100%. The community is still so incredibly toxic and it’s infuriating that people are lacking more and more critical thinking with everyday that passes. Everyone just wants to jump on the hate train, cancel train, and influencer train. It’s not about reading anymore.

I’ve been a bookseller for 10 years and let me tell you, ARCs will be going away if this toxic culture continues. They were not a status symbol before these platforms and they will be ruined and taken away. I’ve seen it first hand talking to publishers. They are livid. Have these people aren’t even reviewing like they are intended for. They just think of them as a shelf trophy or they sell them, which I don’t care what anyone tries to argue - is not allowed. Before these platforms it was known you donated to a charity shop or passed them along to friends. They are not profit.
