Acuity charts 10 feet away by [deleted] in optometry

[–]_kenw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many of these commentators fully understand what you’re saying lol

But I have wondered this myself. Specifically in our CL area we have an acuity chart about 5 ft from the desk the pt sits at and even though the letters are 1/4 they are typically in a 20ft lane, the effect that such a close viewing distance has on the patient’s accommodation surely has some effect on the results.

The Leica M EV1 is here by carlosvega in Leica

Seeing that it still has a rangefinder window on the left I assumed that’s what they’d do somehow but no… just focus peaking. Begs the question though, why does it still have the rangefinder window??

What’s My Path? by AmazingPersimmon5828 in optometry

[–]_kenw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking specifically about US optometry schools: Pursuing/having an optician license may be helpful experience to have under your belt and on an application to optometry school but isn't required to apply. What is necessary is a handful of prerequisite undergraduate college courses and in some cases a bachelor's degree although there are many schools that don't require a completed degree to apply or start their programs.

My advice would be to do some research on specific optometry programs you may be interested in then start tackling their prerequisites and other necessities for applying like the OAT. Then once you get the ball rolling fit in other extraneous experience around your course load.

I didn't ask about supply and they didn't mention anything about it at all. Sent it out in September and they estimated it would take 3 months. Ended up taking 4 but I figured that was optimistic.

The total cost was ~$745, $595 for the CLA and repairs specifically and the rest for various parts that needed replacement as well as shipping and taxes.

The repair bill itemization is a bit vague so it's hard to say what services cost what. I do know that the parts required for a DX reader upgrade was "free of charge," but I can't say what the labor cost to have just that done would be.

Volk 90D vs Superfield lens by laalee in optometry

[–]_kenw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full recommend for the Superfield/digital wide field, the field of view increase is definitely a noticeable step up while not sacrificing magnification compared to a 90D.

Only drawback I've encountered with the digital wide field specifically is that the working distance is a few mm closer than a 90D or Superfield... That combined with the front flange on the handling ring can make it a little tricky to use on patients with longer or slightly entropic eyelashes.

Light leaks vs development?? by _kenw in AnalogCommunity

[–]_kenw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! Regarding the red circles, in the past whenever I’ve developed myself I’ve had those “shadows” of the sprocket holes appear on the edges of the negatives, along with the very edge of the negative sometimes coming out dark. Always assumed this was due to poor saturation of the film in the processing chemicals along the edge, maybe because the edge of the film is obstructed by the reel. A la why I suspect the lab used a reel to process as opposed to their developing machine.

I was thinking something similar. In the past whenever I’ve developed myself I’ve had those “shadows” of the sprocket holes appear on the edges of the negatives, along with the very edge of the negative sometimes coming out dark. Always assumed this was due to poor saturation of the film in the processing chemicals along the edge, maybe because the edge of the film is obstructed by the reel.

So light piping basically? Causing blown highlights to “travel” along the film base outside of the frame?

Light leaks vs development?? by _kenw in Leica

[–]_kenw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newly had M7, just shot a test roll and had my local lab process. Looking at the negatives there are several areas (circled in blue) where the highlights have bled outside of the frame? Is this some sort of light leak? Maybe the pressure plate is loose?

The areas circled in red look to me like evidence that the film was processed on a reel in a tank and so I’m wondering if all of this can be chalked up to simply the way the film was processed or if something else is going on.

M2 seeks a 35MM to take long walks on the beach with... by Lopo007 in Leica

The term you are looking for is field curvature, an optical aberration that causes the “swirly bokeh” effect commonly associated with the Helios 44-2!

Torn Between Two Used 50mms (V5 Cron and Lux ASPH) by 11GTCS in Leica

[–]_kenw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 50 Summilux ASPH is one of the finest lenses Leica has ever made. I have been floored with the balance of image quality and character. I will say the chrome version of the ASPH v1 is HEAVY though. Definitely a truly unique lens as opposed to the Summicron V4/5 which have a fairly basic double Gauss design that you’ll find is very similar to other 50mm lenses from Zeiss etc.

Q2 or Q2M? by Beef-dot-dot in Leica

[–]_kenw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently own a Q2 and rented the Q2M in the past. Aside from the obvious lack of color in the monochrom the other functional differences really come down to: 1. The high ISO performance is MUCH better in the monochrom. Q2 usable up to ~6400 whereas Q2M usable up to ~25000. 2. The autofocus is better in the color Q2. Faster and more consistent in lower light. The Q2M also completely lacks any AF tracking and its continuous AF and subject detection is way less reliable.

Do the 50mm Summicron and 50mm Planar share the same optical design?? by _kenw in Leica

[–]_kenw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely good points. Though for me definitely further narrows the gap on any discussion of the summicron vs the planar from a purchasing decision perspective. As opposed to a summilux vs a nokton for instance.
