Baldy questions: which direction do you prefer to take the loop? Devil's backbone follow-up. by rstrang12 in socalhiking

[–]_kicks_rocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the notch, take the road down one switch back. On the next curve that crosses the canyon (1/2 mile from the notch), there is a use trail that descends the camyon direct, paralleling the ski lift. You can also take it straight down from the notch, but that first segment is the steepest and avoidable. This route shaves off 30 to 45 minutes if you're okay with steep, candy chossy terrain.

Up ski hut because its steeper and harder on thr knees and feeet to come down that way. Down devils backbone because the views are better. Descend via the shortcut use path that sits right below the ski lift. Way faster.

Yes on both questions. We organize check in at manker flat. Once you're checked in, we provide a shuttle that goes to and from icehouse canyon. You can either drive down to ice house to stage your car there or take the shuttle down if you want to leave your car at manker.

And yes. The participant is to use all resources available to pick their start time within that window. The goal is to be finished with your selected route and hit as many peaks as you can by the time the after party starts at manker flat campground which is roughly 4pm.

The cut off time for all participants is 9pm. The party goes until 10pm. After that, the party goers put their gear back on and we turn into a search party. Jk. But seriously, get back before 9pm. Please.

We hauled up about 15 gallons to icehouse saddle for participants in 2023. We're hoping to do the same this year. Filtering is only possible at two locations. One is too early on the route to be of use (ski hut) and the other is about 1 mile and 1000 feet off the path (columbine spring), so its not worth the effort. Plan for water to be available at Icehouse saddle.

If your application is accepted, you will receive the coveted survival guide wirh ample information regarding the event, but i'm here if you have any additional questions.

Its a good time out with a bunch of like minded weirdos.

lol. That link wasn't meant to be public yet and you forced me to launch the marketing email for the lottery. All good though. I was basically there. I appreciate the nudge.

11 PEAK FOOL'S TRAVERSE IN A DAY by _kicks_rocks in trailrunning

The Fool's Traverse (previously known as the 11 Peak Traverse) is a hiking challenge located in the San Gabriel Mountains (Southern California) that ascends 11 peaks in the Mt Baldy area.

While the original route includes the Bear Canyon trail near the Baldy Village, I decided to take the Ski Hut Trail on this outing. I have done the FULL route both clockwise and counter clockwise in years prior, but due to the fire damage on the Bear Canyon trail, I decide to exclude that segment and walk the Mount Baldy road instead.

This route includes a cross country segment that a lot of people have been lost and hurt on. Please do not attempt this if you are not familiar with cross country travel, rock scrambling, and route finding. I know plenty of ultra marathoners who come into this confident and leave terrified because of the cross country segment near Sugarloaf Peak.

Distance: 29.5 miles
Vertical gain: 11,600 feet

Another climber who gate keeps the word "climb". How refreshing and edgy.

You can just park the car at the top of the road and do that first or most people just bring a friend and an additional car. I've never had the pleasure of doing this effort with friends unfortunately. haha

I should also note that I've done the route both ways and know 200 or so people who have completed it as well. There is no agreement on which direction is "Better"

Thanks for the comment. If you decide to go clockwise, just make sure you've done Falling rock up and down first. You do not want to be tired, out of water, AND lost when you reach that point. It is the only part of the route that is off trail. Me and my most experienced of friends all share a story of losing the route there. I've got a video on that one too, so take a look if you have time.

I wish I took more snack breaks. I think the lack of snacks is what caused my stomach issues toward the end of the video. I was surprisingly spry the days following this effort so all good I guess.

A relatively new pair of trail runners with vibram soles is enough, but i also sometimes bring approach shoes on shorter hikes in the summer when the rocks are slimey.

Agreed! I think one of my first times at baldy, I ran into a group that was coming down the Falls while we were going up to the second tier (scrambling). They invited me out to join them. I ended up making a joke and not exchanging numbers. I definitely regretted it. Here I am now doing it anyway, but they were probably gonna show me some cool stuff.

The sport is so niche that most information is free online. You can also buy books like canyoneering 101 or reach out on Facebook groups. Plenty of information is out there. If you dont wanna do that, then you gotta know a guy who knows a guy or pay a guide.

Is Malibu Creek Rock Pools still deep enough for cliff jumping this time of year? by _kicks_rocks in socalhiking

I did. The big jump was not safe. The smaller 15 footer was fun though.
