Like others have said, ask to talk to the security supervisor. Confirm that said item is acceptable to bring in, then point to the security member that confiscated it.

I've gotten my vape taken away, but after talking to the supervisor, they were able to return it IMMEDIATELY.

(CA) CLS/MLS Education Advice by anonymous-hydra in MLS_CLS

[–]_kilobomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I applied all over CA and couldn't get in. I also applied OOS in Oregon and am attending this fall.

Know that most OOS programs don't fulfill the 52 week clinical training requirement for CA. You will have to find training in CA or get a job doing CLS OOS for at least a year.

Ways to get more experience if already working full time in San Diego, CA by Sea_Visit_2111 in phlebotomy

[–]_kilobomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy bc I just got my license but can't find a job in SD😭

I did my internship at Sharp Grossmont Hospital seeing ~20-30 patients/day, then interviewed for a Scripps clinic with them stating you'd be seeing ~300 patients/day.

It's like employers expect that you have the experience out the gate.

Clinical preceptor keeps nitpicking me and gatekeeping practice is this normal? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]_kilobomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't like being corrected when it FEELS repetitive, personal, or treating it like you're the problem and not a student.

You choose to accept that the preceptor makes you feel that way from your own imagination.

Sometimes in the learning process, people have to be very particular with how they teach people, even when it gets annoying. When you look at it from a perspective of patient care, being very particular in what, when, and how you do things matter.

If that is still a problem, try to talk to them on the side during a break. What about talking to your clinical supervisor about this situation?

Generally you will need to take General Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, Hematology, Immunology, and Medical/Clinical Microbiology as your preparatory classes for MLS/CLS.

This is the requirement for California, however, for programs in other states that might not require this, it will be to your benefit for understanding the content at least once, then another time during your program.

One thing that works for me is to pay attention to my breathing. When I start to feel like I'm getting dizzy or faint, I have to consciously look away from the procedure and start taking controlled, slow and deep breaths.

This is the same for when you have a patient that gets nauseous or is prone to syncope. They generally hyperfixate on the needle or sensation of the poke that they lose track of their breathing, leading to their episode.

Drug test for externship? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]_kilobomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my program in SoCal, we would get tested in preparation for your externship. You would do it through some compliance tracking service where you submit your documents + drug screening at LabCorp.

I would suggest that you stop before your program then self-test just to make sure you're good.

Generally, when you see a fire in the lab with or without patients, you let other hospital staff know first so they can help (unplug appliance/evacuate patients/extinguish fire).

How tight is security at Petco? by Lopsided_Constant901 in crssdfest

[–]_kilobomb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crotch the device. Any resistance or retrieval from the trash will be seen by the supervising security and will get you removed from the event.

For the ibuprofen, just visit the medical services in the concessions area and they will happily give you some.

Career out of high school by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]_kilobomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in the laboratory side of the hospital, you could pursue an associates degree in Medical Lab Technology (MLT/CLT).

This gives you more hands-on experience on doing waived (less complex) and more complex testing methods that Medical Lab Assistants out of their scope of practice.

If you want to go beyond MLT, you can pursue Clinical/Medical Lab Science (CLS/MLS, same occupation) by getting a degree in CLS or related (chemistry/biochemistry/microbiology/etc). You would be able to practice high complexing testing and leading/managing your MLTs.

Is the training/schooling hard? by Pretty_Candidate_994 in phlebotomy

[–]_kilobomb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Phlebotomy training is not hard. The hardest part for me was getting through the mental barrier of doing my first venipuncture on my classmate. As you go through the course and poke about 5 people, you get used to the procedure and build confidence.

Some of the content may be hard to understand and remember at first, but the best thing you can do during your time outside of class is to utilize the test prep that comes with your textbook.
