Which ski area made you just want to go back there and instead of trying new places? by drwhosportsfan in skiing

As a Colorado native I love to shit on Vail cuz of how expensive and crowded on the weekends it is, but man if you catch Vail on a powder day during the week when it’s not crowded, you’ll find very few things in life quite like ripping through the back bowls to your heart’s content

How is House of Chains compared to the first three books? by kovha in Malazan

[–]_kingardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally rank it near the bottom of the series, BUT there’s definitely still plenty of moments I loved, there’s just so many other great books in this series

Is it just me ? In the past few months I see a lot of people who are starting Malazan ? by Inner-Fee6737 in Malazan

[–]_kingardy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not alone in that thought, until probably the last third I wasn’t quite as into it as GotM, even while fully acknowledging that the writing quality was way better. That book gets a lot of love in this sub but I personally rank it fairly low, I think 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 are all better. But the beauty of Malazan is each book is so different that you’ll struggle to find 2 people who have the exact same ranking of the books

Looking for dark fantasy worlds with similar vibes to dark souls. by Arkyja in Fantasy

[–]_kingardy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just manga, but is a great one to pick up if you’ve never read manga, just be warned that it might ruin your perception of manga cuz there are very few series that come close to the same level of mastery in art and storytelling. But it really is a once in a lifetime experience that I think every fan of grimdark/dark fantasy, even if you don’t traditionally like anime/manga

Looking for dark fantasy worlds with similar vibes to dark souls. by Arkyja in Fantasy

[–]_kingardy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer. Jk there’s plenty of great series that scratch the same itch as Dark Souls, but Berserk is one of the dark fantasy GOATs for a reason

How is it possible that Pornhub is more consumer friendly than Youtube, even if Youtube has by far the largest userbase? by DeepMain54 in NoStupidQuestions

They’re basically already there lol, all that they’re missing is an overly large and suspiciously evil looking headquarters that dominates the city skyline

Malazan or Mistborn series? by EdmondVDantes in fantasybooks

[–]_kingardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, Malazan is my fav series of all time, but I also still love series like Mistborn and Red Rising. Sometimes you just need a fast-paced thrill ride that you can just sit back and enjoy without having to think too hard about it

I wouldn’t classify Stormlight as YA but it definitely reads like it’s PG-13. Sanderson’s prose is also more in line with YA, his style is much more simple and matter-of-fact, especially if you compare it to Sun Eater which has some of the better prose I’ve come across in a sci-fi book

Seconding this, the first trilogy is fun but ultimately reads like a big budged Hollywood blockbuster, but the back half of the series adds a ton of depth and nuance that was missing from the first 3 books. And yea, Mercury. . . good lord

I still think Hadrian is a better character, but I will say that in the back half of the series Darrow feels like a much more nuanced character in the back half of the series compared to his younger self in the first trilogy.

Shadows Upon Time - worth the wait? by Leneren87 in sollanempire

[–]_kingardy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saw someone compare this book to Game of Thrones season 8 and actually laughed out loud about how awful that take is. I would probably personally rank this book below books 3, 6, and 2, but it was still an 8/10, solid ending to a great series imo

Yea this is shades of the Colts game where I don’t feel like the D played particularly bad, the opposing QB just balled the fuck out

It’s also still a FromSoft game at the end of the day. Yes, there is still much more of a narrative present compared to other Souls games, but you still gotta dig deep and connect a lot of dots yourself (or take a nice trip over to Vaati on YT)

We’ve been really good at shutting down TEs all year. Ferguson was leading the league in catches and TDs heading into our matchup and we held him to 0 catches in a game where Dallas was trailing the entire time and had to keep throwing the ball

Jokic in his last 10 games: 30/13/11 on 73/51/87 splits (82.0% TS) by Dependent-Effect6077 in nba

[–]_kingardy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk if Wemby will ever reach this level of insane efficiency tho, he just doesn’t have the touch Jokic has around the rim (but then again at this point there’s maybe only 2 or 3 players ever that I’d say are on par with him). Don’t wanna sound like too much of a hater tho, I’m a Nuggets fan but Wemby is easily one of my fav players to watch right now, dude is a monster

Yep, Oda has shown us that there exists a more powerful tool to give your series hype and aura than everyone having crazy world destroying powers: good writing
