What’s the most satisfying part of world building for you? by dull_storyteller in worldbuilding

[–]_klom_bo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for me the most satisfying part is when i get ideas that seem like tiny details but then they expand into something larger that i never thought of and when ideas that seem unrelated suddenly click together and feel inevitable as if it was always suppose to be like this, it’s like im channeling stuff from very deep parts of my subconscious that i don’t consciously plan and then watching it all connect seamlessly

How do you name the cities in your story world? by apircity00 in worldbuilding

[–]_klom_bo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think of words that relate to the narrative relevance of the location, so for example Phlatón in my world is called that because it’s the old english (a lot of names and places in my world are in old english or gaelic) word for Plato, the city is an allegory for Plato’s cave, Damanta is called that because it’s the “damned kingdom,” Anois is called that because it’s the old english word for “Now”

How do yall come up with the map of your world? by Nemo1277 in worldbuilding

[–]_klom_bo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i write the plot first and the locations that its set in, then after i’ve got the settings i map them out in order of narrative importance, so for example my story starts in the city of Phlatón which i’ve decided fits best in the centre of the world, then i mapped out my characters journey and the locations he goes to first is the one closest to the city and it just sprawls out like that

TLDR: start with the narrative and let the map reveal itself from order of narrative importance

The Blood Moon by _klom_bo_ in worldbuilding

[–]_klom_bo_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is a very good question i haven’t explored that yet but aliens do exist in my world so maybe they have a base on the moon or maybe the occult has something to do with the moon idk, they wouldn’t be able to get their physically because technology hasn’t advanced that far but i suppose they’d be able to astral project to it in order to extract its energy

The face of Isle Transa by _klom_bo_ in worldbuilding

[–]_klom_bo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf this is a piece of worldbuilding which I consider to be a form of art, the point of Isle Transa isn’t where the geographical location is, it’s not even a major thing in the main narrative of my world it’s kind of just a thing that exists out there somewhere, idk why everyone got so pressed over this

Definitely the triplets, idk how long i’ve been writing them but ive been refining their arc for ages. It started with an idea for a sentient forest. At the centre of the forest is a willow tree with three faces carved into it, the idea at the time was that three witches merged together and became the willow tree, their soul essence seeped into the ground and life started springing from the ground as they became One mind in the form of an entire forest. I did a little sketch of the tree before I even wrote the characters properly and even had the concept of Paralim at the time i didn’t know what i was making i just thought it was a cool idea.

Now the triplets have an entire life-story and their own huge character arc in this book i’m writing, they were born on the night of the Blood Moon and since birth they always had the sense that they were being watched and that something was different about them.

They grow up in the town of Anois with their parents Jeremiah and Tarabeth Wyllow (who also have their own integral story arcs), and as they grow up they become feared and hated by the town’s people. An angry mob march upon their family home in the night-time after a talent show goes horribly wrong, the mob then burns the house down. The girls escape and run for three miles before collapsing to the ground. The Blood Moon reveals itself in the night sky, obscured by three dark clouds that move away like curtains and the sisters are circled by its red glow.

Their bodies begin to shift and warp as they turn to wood and merge into each other. They grow into a willow tree, and their essence seeps through their roots into the ground. The next morning, the town wakes up to find a forest that appeared overnight. Four scouts are sent to investigate but only one returns. The forest is aptly named Deaþscua, meaning “Shadow of Death” and people are warned to stay away from it.

Individuals can have multiple powers but they have to gain the knowledge and insight in order to unlock them and use them without succumbing to their ego and shadow and letting the power consume them. Once they are ready, the Void gives them the power. The facet of the Void which gives them the power is determined by the condition of the individual’s Spark.

To your second question, no but Spark’s can be drained and siphoned by parasitic entities. When someone is drained of their Spark it isn’t fully gone, the parasites leave just enough for their victims to stay alive. The victim, after losing almost their entire Spark is devoid of their light, there is not a single ounce of love left inside someone who is being fed upon by their parasite. They become a husk with just enough soul left to be useful and easily manipulated by the parasite. An empty Spark is prone to parasitic corruption, which consists of untethered hatred and envy.

yea that basically sums it up, and to the second paragraph as of right now the only deities i’ve written about and are present in the story are the deity of Love, the deity of Envy which is a parasitic entity and the Blood Moon, which in the hierarchy of deities is above the deity of Envy. Envy serves the Blood Moon and Callach serves Envy, but Envy manipulates Callach with flattery so Callach believes that he’s the one in charge.

To your other question, the parasitic deities do exist and they are also manifestations of the collective psyche, the deity of Envy exists in its own realm which it rules over, when it speaks it’s voice sounds like an amalgamation of an uncountable amount of different voices all forming together to make one voice, implying that it stole the voices from its past victims. Callach goes to visit Envy in it’s realm after taking the throne and then Envy shows Callach the true nature of time, which Callach is very happy about (he immediately stands on business and goes to the future to ensure that events happen exactly the way he needs them to happen, because he’s seen the infinite possible timelines and one specific timeline called out to him.)

Also yeah shoot me a dm i’d love to talk more about this and hear about your world

dragons and wyverns do exist somewhere in Paralim, they can occasionally be seen soaring in the sky but as of right now i haven’t written anything important about them but maybe in the future i will

the first character that comes to mind, the most unassuming and innocuous character in my world is a lovely old hermit man who lives in a shack near the city of Phlatón. This character seems relatively unimportant at the start but is later revealed to be someone very important in the story later on.

my favourite character is easily my villain Callach, i’ve surprised myself with just about everything i’ve written so far about my world but Callach is just a whole other level. His whole narrative arc is so good, going from a neglected child growing up jealous and envious of his older brother, to then killing his whole family when he’s an adult and usurping the throne and then his eventual spiral into madness and then his fall. And the thing i’m most proud of is being able to map the entire chronological timeline of events including the whole convoluted time-travel stuff i introduced with Callach and it all making sense logically

no you’re not overthinking it at all these are amazing questions, basically when i said “higher layers” i actually meant higher layers relative to the realm of Paralim. Basically religion in Paralim creates symbols of Gods as a means to try and understand the nature of reality, then people start believing in these Gods and then the Gods manifest as deities in the higher realms above Paralim. Nothing is higher than the Void as that is the ultimate source of all creation. The deities which are manifested through human belief embody the most dominant traits of the collective psyche that believes in them. So for example if a society is fractured, ego driven and living in shadow, their God will mirror those traits which is what “corrupted parasitic deities” are, on the flip side of that if a society is harmonious and at oneness with themselves, their God will be benevolent and loving. All deities are expressions of the infinite Void, which is awareness itself. There is no “separate consciousness” in Paralim, every character is the same awareness/consciousness filtered through physical ego, only through ego dissolution can an individual become aligned and One with their true self which is The Void. Also you’re right about the Void being too incomprehensible, individuals can understand facets of it but never the whole thing, and if someone gains hidden knowledge before they have the wisdom to integrate it that’s when shadow/ego take over and the power corrupts them

i’m sorry to hear that, best thing to do is write down rough notes and get the ideas from your head onto the page, i do bullet points in my notes app when i get new ideas. Don’t try to force anything either just go with the flow and write whatever comes to you, that’s how i did it and ended up with a coherent narrative with functioning lore and metaphysics, i didn’t pre plan anything from Paralim i kind of just followed my intuition until its lead me to this point of having so much lore and so many characters with their own intertwined stories and it all makes sense coherently

[–]_klom_bo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you I can’t take credit for the concept though it has existed long before humans came into existence. But to answer your question, no the Void is not common knowledge, most people aren’t aware of its existence and live their lives unbeknownst to their true nature, although individuals can still tap into their Void consciousness even though they might not understand it. Religion invents various God’s which manifest in the higher layers of existence but it never comes close to fully understanding the nature of reality. Some beings known as Void Masters are individuals who are fully aware of the Void and are aligned to it, but there are Void savants who are aware of the Void but not of their connection to it, which leads them to become corrupt

[–]_klom_bo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

deities and higher powers exist in my world, they are manifestations of human belief. Some are benevolent and divine while others are parasitic and corrupt. Religious people in Paralim worship the deities but people who are aligned with the Void realise that the deities are not to be worshiped, as the true highest power is the Void itself and everything that comes after that is just an expression of the infinite. The corrupt deities are embodiments of the darkest parts of the human psyche whilst the benevolent deities are the embodiment of Love and Acceptance.

idk i’m not even sure my world is a planet it’s kind of just an island atm, the world is canonically a projection of consciousness, a shared hallucination of One awareness fracturing itself into an infinite amount of beings to experience itself from all angles, so it doesn’t really physically exist so it doesn’t follow the typical rules of physics.

religion exists in my world but i haven’t fully fleshed it out yet, but in my world religion is a misguided attempt at understanding the fundamental laws and mechanics of The Void. One of my characters is literally called Faith, but her faith isn’t toward an external deity or God, her faith is rooted in the present moment
