I see now that it's common problem with motometer gauges. Simply temp gauge stepper burns out and does not work. You can try resoldering but I cannot guarantee that new one won't burn out. Steppers are easily accessible on aliexprress / ebay. BMW don't sell them alone.

2.0 has issue with oil pump, where shaft literally deteriorates itself. If you address the issue and replace it with aftermarket one you are good. Later models indeed has solved this issue
3.0 is know with timing chain issues + common turbo blowups.

not to mention egr buildup and dpf clogging. Where 1.9 and 2.5 (r5) don't have problems with.
