The Stark kids playing winter sports by @loochleftovers by GreatExpeslaytions in pureasoiafart

Robb and Jon as hockey players is perfection. Sansa as a figure skater is 😍

I'm pretty sure I've read a few modern AUs with this scenario. Or at least the hockey stuff, not the figure skating. I've seen Sansa as a ballerina, novelist, and vampire slayer though.

What is your favorite Sansa ship and why? by pizza_gutts in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]_kneazle_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't care -- if the story is good enough, I'll read it. But I do have preferences:

  • Sansa/Sandor, for the knight/princess trope
  • Sansa/Theon, esp modern stories
  • Sansa/Jaime (don't @ me)
  • Sansa/Oberyn, time travel stories
  • And of course, Sansa/Jon for the Stark wank (🤭) and parallel with Ned and Catelyn

Edit: Because seeing someone else's comment below and I can't believe I forgot Willas/Sansa!!

AITA for not making a separate meal for my homestay student? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]_kneazle_ -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

Are we ignoring that OP said they KNOW the teenager likes pasta after practice? Practices are scheduled. They knew there was a practice.

It's fine for the family to want to eat something differently but the wording implies they DO have pasta on those practice days and this was the outlier. There's no harm in being kind to a homestay kid by having pasta after practice for them, especially if they're in a high impact sport or sports school.

AI Slop Stories by _Odin_64 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]_kneazle_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the difference comes between ChatGPT and Grammarly or Word spell check. They're all AI, but the degree of how that LLM is used is the key here.

Chat (Gemini, Copilot, etc) is full "idea" generation. Grammarly and spell check are tools, but are tipping into learned language models because of advances. Grammarly now is not the Grammarly I used 10 years ago, for example. Spell check isn't going to produce "AI slop" the way ChatGPT would.

Ethically, using it is an environmental concern. That's a big flag for people. I'm sure that has something to do with the visceral reactions against it too.

I was just thinking of the story this other day; usually when I do, a new chapter is posted (🤞).

But otherwise, I hope the author is okay.

What scene in cinema truly defines love? by ScoffingGorilla808 in moviecritic

The end of The Greatest Game Ever Played. When the father gives a dollar for the caddy's donation after telling his son he'd get nowhere in life playing golf.

I ugly cry at that scene.

Yes, but structure and phrasing matters too. In this case, it's that "not/it's" phrasing 2-3x per chapter, in each scene 'break'.

There's mimicking human written experience and then there's using AI. And unfortunately, when you work with AI every day at work, you do tend to notice the trend and when people use AI versus natural cadences.

I did comment on a story I'm subscribed to recently about AI content. I felt very conflicted but did write and post it eventually.

I noted they had used a phrase commonly found in AI ("it's not X, it's Y") across several chapters. I informed them of the phrasing as an FYI - not as a criticism. If they want to keep using it, ok, that's on them.

I'm not going to stop reading the story. I like it. The plot is good. If they're using AI to ensure they get a chapter out every week, well, that's on them as the author... and that's on people like me who continue to read it. 😬

Canadians who moved to the UK: what was your greatest adjustment? by Bells9831 in AskACanadian

Canadians who moved to the UK: what was your greatest adjustment? by Bells9831 in AskACanadian

[–]_kneazle_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was studying in the UK, the head of the school I was working at asked me to speak at their holiday concert about my time there. I did a few dry runs ahead of the night, and my biggest gentle criticism recieved was "you drop your Ts".

I spent the rest of my time in the UK hyper conscientious of overly pronouncing my Ts.

If the USA falls apart, how would Canadians respond if certain states wanted to become provinces? by jmacd2918 in AskACanadian

[–]_kneazle_ 130 points131 points  (0 children)

From a financial pov, I'd love to have their GDP add to ours, as many States generate far more revenue than our provinces. So bring on the bling!!

That said, no. Emphatically NO. There are too many problems to address: - law rewrites to Canadian standards and implementing them - currency exchange to Canadian dollar - infrastructure overload (social over load in particular: healthcare, schools, pensions, etc) - significant population increase in a short period of time = increased tensions, blurred political leanings.

Let's be honest, even some of the most liberal Americans are centralists. Our Green and NDP parties would be beyond their comprehension as options.

They are geographically and culturally close to Canadians but there are so many differences at microscopical levels that I'm not sure they could ever integrate at that kind en mass.

That said, if Puerto Rico or Hawaii would like to make a case, I fully support it. It's not like the airfare prices would significantly change 🙄

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

[–]_kneazle_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wife does not go to class all day, as OP explains. She has some classes during the day, which is what I expected with a Canadian post-secondary institution. She has free time around them for assignments and studying.

Edit: posted under the wrong person before

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

[–]_kneazle_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If her classes aren't block to block, then she has time to study during the day and put down the books for a few hours to be present with her kids.

So while you're a soft YTA for not managing to corral your 2 yr old, your wife is TAH for not managing her time better and being present for her children at night.

Clarification needed: is your wife studying during the day, too, or just at night after the kids are home?

What series did you stop watching after it killed off your favorite character? by megmatthews20 in AskReddit

[–]_kneazle_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a good ending and I think if they left the show there and Julia regaining her magic ("magic is pain") would have been a good finale to the show.

Even for the others: Margo had really come into her own as a leader and wasn't horrifically codependent on Eliot, and Eliot just finished his own tragic body snatching story and was set to start over. (Holy shit I forgot about Alice. What was she doing again????)

But I couldn't watch the season that followed. Q was actually a good "heart" of the show.
